Just wondering what your opinions might be for the best racers on the
Nintendo 64...
thanks!
Andrew
Flame warArgument over asking about N64 racing games on r.a.s.
Andrew asked for the best Nintendo 64 racing games and was told he was in the wrong place, sparking an argument with ymenard over whether the group's platform-neutral charter covers arcade console racers. Insults flew between Andrew, ymenard and SimRacer, though Alex Cameron suggested F1 World Grand Prix and Moogman recommended World Driver Championship. The thread cooled into nostalgia for 8-bit racers and Monty Python.

Does N4, GPL, or RT even run on N64?
Sounds like you may have the wrong newsgroup.

rec.autos.simulators.... hmmmm.... no mention of a platform as far as I can
tell.
Funny, too: no mention of those three in the newsgroup name. Maybe *you* have
the wrong newsgroup, eh?
I can play those on my PC any time I want to.

From the r.a.s. charter :
=================
Welcome to rec.autos.simulators. This is an unmoderated newsgroup for
discussions of realistic computer simulations of automotive vehicles,
irrespective of the platforms on which the simulations are supported.
This includes simulations which have a competitive component (racing
simulations) and those which do not. Arcade racing simulators, which
give an overhead perspective and which do not attempt to provide realism
of handling of the vehicle, would not be appropriate in this newsgroup,
whilst discussion of Microprose's Formula 1 Grand Prix and Papyrus's
IndyCar Racing would be appropriate. (From the original charter of
r.a.s. -- [email hidden])
================
It's just that all N64 racing games (yeah including the really bad Super
Mario Kart 64 which is so much inferior to it's SNES counterpart) are
arcade-style. All of them. It's not our role to judge what is the best
"Arcade racing simulator", because for us any title that is an "Arcade
racing simulator" is inferior to the worst of "Realistic computer
simulation".
It would be better of you to ask in another newsgroup (ex :
rec.games.video.nintendo or alt.games.video.nintendo-64) on how they rate
their own "Arcade racing simulations" because we just ignore them, it's not
what we want.

Your lectures are as tiresome as ever, you pompous ignorant bore.
I asked here because I expected there would be more serious and accurate
replies, yours notwithstanding. Quite frankly I expected more here. Naturally
I also expect the closedminded uniformed responses I'll undoubtedly receive.
I have plenty of sims on my PC. I'm looking to expand my horizons; if you
don't want to, that's your problem. I'll live without your precious guidance,

Change the charter or start some other newsgroups, like it's been suggested

LOL what the heck do you want us to answer you? I wrote that because of the
charter, the nature of this newsgroup is people who discuss racing
simulations that model realistic environments. There is no title on the N64
console that model realistic environments. (yes, even F1 WGP just make some
deja search about it in this NG it's just an arcade sim like the old F1
series for the PSX)
So gee, I even helped you and pushed you towards newsgroups that would
answer you a much better way then here. What do you want more?

And we bloody answered you! If you want racing simulations, don't go
towards the N64 because there is none that are worth it. Hello? McFly?

happened. Why did you just wrote that? You should YOURSELF change it if
you don't like it. LOL

How do you know I didn't? Assume, assume, assume.
You have already disqualified yourself to answer accurately.
Lying? You can insult the intelligence of all the people who haven't read this
group as long as I have. Your silly accusation of lying doesn't work on me or
anyone else who has also read this group for years.
I suppose you can honestly say nobody has ever suggested a GPL group? You're
only kidding yourself if that's what you believe, or expect others to.

Uh, I said killfile *me*. Obviously a language barrier thing.
Franois, your response was unexpectedly civil. That said, your
closed-mindedness would be stunning if it weren't for the many people I
encounter unwilling to consider anything but their own opinion, and more than
willing to put words in the mouths of others and issue silly statements such as
>"because for us any title that is an "Arcade racing simulator" is inferior tothe worst of "Realistic computer simulation" < are quite useless.
The reason I asked in this group was because I could get the perspective of
people who know the difference between sims and strictly arcade games; I own
F-1 World Championship and it is certainly not an arcade game. And I do not
steer with my thumbs, as Dave Henrie assumed.
"Arcade racing simulators, which give an overhead perspective and which do not
attempt to provide realism of handling of the vehicle, would not be appropriate
in this newsgroup"
I strongly suggest you go back and read the remainder of the portion of the
charter you posted. Especially the "irrespective of platform" part.
Your broad-stroke approach suggesting there are only arcade-style racers on the
N64 (and Playstation, apparently) is uninformed.

LOL how can my response be MORE civil then simply stating that because of
the NG charter, all N64 games don't apply to this newsgroup and it would be
better for you to ask elsewhere, because we just aren't qualify to rate
arcade games, even more arcade games on the N64 console.

No, it's my opinion and I will still continue to say that all N64 racing
games are arcade-oriented. Why did you just wrote the PSX? Don't put words

Not only do you not understand what "unexpectedly" means, you seem to be
ignoring the "regardless of platform" part of the charter.
Hey, whatever. You don't fool me.
Right. And your opinion is uniformed. I don't know what you mean when you say
"Why did you just wrote the PSX?".
And why pretend I'm putting words in your mouth when you were the one to say
"There is no title on the N64
console that model realistic environments." ?
Funny, how you're willing to put words in others' mouths, and yet try to
pretend it's the opposite. You don't fool me.

and certainly won't do that for you.

You blattently put words in my mouth stating that "apparently", I suggest
there are only arcade-style racers on the PSX. That's false, I never stated
that, I simply state that *ALL* N64 racing games are either old,
arcade-oriented or simply plain bad and pass. Why did you include a
reference to the playstation? Don't put words in my mouth.

GPL itself is old (but much younger then any of those 2 games you linked),
but the community is still racing it, and still is modified to look modern
and fresh. In fact, there's more fingers on my left arm then racing sims
that look as fresh as GPL currently. The N64's racing games are all
outdated, and arcade-oriented. All of them. You wanted an answer? You sure
got it, like I said what did you expect? That we would start praising those
arcade games?
Anyway, why did you ask the question in the first place when you obviously
knew there weren't any? Thanks also for skipping my whole arguments in this
previous post, it's probably because you have nothing to retaliate against.

posting the relevant parts of the FAQ which used to be posted here
regularly.

[Editor: While the original charter states that "Arcade racing
simulators" should not be discussed in r.a.s., the general consesus is
that they are welcome to participate in r.a.s.]

So it would seem that andrew is quite welcome to post about any racer he
sees fit. Whether anyone here could help him or not I can't say, but he's
quite entitled to ask.

That's exactly what I said (the editor's notice is not officially part of
the charter, it's just his opinion). There's better places to help him (I
pointed him to those newsgroups) because the nature of this NG is not to
rate "Arcade racing simulators" as it denies the point of this NG. We
research realism.

The best racing game by far for the N64 is a little beauty called World
Driver Champion from Midway and Boss Game Studios. Nothing else even comes
close for solid driving feel.

I think the chances of a person getting an opinion of the most
realistic (relatively speaking) racing game on a N64 is probably
higher here on R.A.S. than on a forum dedicated to the N64 arcade
games which are more likely to contain people biased towards arcade
style games. The fact that the N64 might or might not have a
realistic game out there is probably more like to be determined
*after* asking the question than by assumption.
i don't have a problem with the original question. i enjoy a quick
game now and then and Gran Turismo serves me well for those moments.
I don't think that condemns me to having an arcade mentality. My many
hours of GPL / F1RC / GP3 would say otherwise.
My understanding of the original question was not to find a simulator
like GPL for the N64, but merely to point out one that stood up above
the rest of the crowd and was at least approaching the realism of PC
Sims. If one exists, lets point Andrew to it and maybe someone else
could benefit from the opinion. It could be used as a trainer for my
6 year old daughter until she can begin to the skills necessary to
challenge her dad at the Ring :) For Andrew's sake, I hope such a sim
exists.

Oh btw, Super Mario Kart on the SNES is still one of the most entertaining

(just kidding about Super Mario Kart)
For fun, my fave 8 & 16 bit racing (arcade or otherwise) are (in no
order)
1 Kikstart (C64)
2 Pitstop 2 (C64)
3 Stunt Car Racer (Amiga)
4 Trailblazer (C64)
5 Lotus (Amiga)
6 Racing Destruction Set (C64) - I'd kill for a pc version.
7 Super Hang On (Amiga)
8 RVF Honda (Amiga)
9 Test Drive 2 (Amiga)
10 4D Stunts (Amiga)
11 Indy 500 (Amiga)
I guess I missed quite a few, but I don't really consider any of the
pc games before Indy 500 were better than the amiga or c64 versions.
Just my opinion, of course.

No, you weren't.
;)
We have a double cd of Monty Python's greatest hits. It was great until
the local kids listened to it...suddenly I had several 10 year olds marching
through my house and singing...
"Sit on my face, and tell me that you love me...."
The neighborhood parents were less than pleased. :)

I would have paid good money to see the neighborhood parents reactions
actually....:-)

My friend's father confiscated my friend's MP albums because of this song...
What his father didn't realize was that he had switched out the vinyl for other
older records of his father's in anticipation...
He found out anyway. Oh well.
