David G Fisher claims nobody would buy GPL2
Ed Solheim pointed to a Motorsport magazine Can-Am feature as reasons a GPL2 should cover other eras, and David G Fisher replied that nobody would buy GPL2. Many said they would, Simon Brown claimed GPL met sales expectations in Europe, and ymenard argued niche markets can be profitable. Several posters accused Fisher of trolling.
Automated summary.
One very good reason why they shouldn't.
Nobody would buy it.

The GPL community has been crying out for GPL2 for ages, so why all of a
sudden would nobody buy it?
Lol SpeedFreek.
Wrong, I would buy it :)
Did you know GPL actually sold in line with expectations in europe? Sierra
said they were not dissapointed with european sales at all.
GPL2 has a few things in it's favour to do a little better than GPL,
assuming of course that there is a GPL2 in production. For instance-
- it's more recent and the cars look much more like modern F1 cars
- the cars also look more exciting
- it will run much better on current hardware than GPL did when released (I
remember running GPL at 16 fps in training)
- the cars will have more grip (through downforce) and should be easier to
drive
- there are more PC owners than 3 years ago
- GPL has a good reputation
- Papyrus have a good reputation and N4 has spread this reputation wider
All things in it's favour. Anyway, I guess DK will be making it mainly
because he wants to make it and not simply for sales.
Simon.

And with this post, DGF shows that he's only a troll, and will always be
unless he admits that he actually doesn't give an arse about racing sims,
that he never did.

DGF != the GPL community. He has never been part of it, far or close. He
admitted it, that most of his GPL time comes from the demo. He can't
understand our view of the situation, considering his external POV. He
cannot grabs that GPL sold to the market that it was created for, and it
sold pretty well for each and every one of us. That GPL still sells. That
GPL in europe sold very well.

for pretty reasonable rates on US "MotorSport" subscriptions - much better
than if you go to the publisher directly, I assume because they're shipping
in bulk rather than individually.

Rubbish. The platform is already there, they have a stable game engine that
produced already two solid titles. When will people in the racing community
start to learn that selling to a specific market *is* something possible?
They do it all the time in the flight sim community, the space sim
community, the RPG community, the adventure community, naval sims,
war-historic games, etc...
Licensing is the only issue here, because the man-hour work on GPL2 wouldn't
be that much as the major basis for the sim is already there. Considering
that GPL sold pretty well in Europe, and as the rumours unfold, it is enough
of a hit to satisfy a second version of the title. GPL did not need an FIA
license, I doubt GPL2 would. Less money spent. The only key features left
are some principal drivers and the major team licensing. As they were able
to get them in GPL (Lotus, Ferrari, etc..), it shouldn't be a problem in
GPL2. Their russian artwork team doesn't cost as much as having one in
North America, another way to cut the cost of production.
You have nothing to stand on stating that it wouldn't sell enough because 1)
you don't know how many copies GPL2 would sell (it could be a major hit) and
2) you can't say about the total budget of the speculated GPL2. In the
entertainment it's all about taking risks. You only speculate, I can only
do that either, but to say that it absolutely cannot break even is just
plain FALSE.

For the record, I'd buy it.
For the record. I don't think it gonna happen.
For the record. I hope I'm wrong.

Agreed, if they can publish games like "trophy bass fishing", deer
hunting games and the like...Even MS train sim was reasonably popular,
and that is certainly a niche market. If it is done well, then the
niche market will embrace it as they have with GPL. Just not with
Nascar 4 or Quake 3 sales figures.
