Custom force feedback profiles for F1 2001

Pat Dotson shared custom F1 2001 force feedback settings for Logitech, ACT Labs and Microsoft wheels, saying the stock grip weighting was too high and his profiles gave a more GPL-like feel. Users praised the results, and the thread explained why some wheels need negative FF values, how F1 2001's steering sensitivity slider works, and that NASCAR 4 does not allow similar tuning.

I have three different ff profiles for F1 2001. Each one is for a different FF wheel. I've done profiles for the Logitech, ACT Labs, and Microsoft wheels. The stock FF parameters have IMO the grip level set way too high. With my settings, I get a much better feel for the overall balance of the car. The settings yeild roughly the same feel on each brand of wheel. I am going to follow up with a post containing the settings for each wheel. Just cut and paste into the relevant section of the <player>.plr file. I can't guarantee they will work for you. Use at your own risk. Please let me know if these files work better for you! -- Pat Dotson

Good luck with these! They give more of a GPL FF feel to F1 2001, only these are a little bit better than GPL FF I think. :) With the grip weight set as high as the stock settings, steering forces are downright unrealistic. The steering force falls off so quickly that I can't control the car very well. Well, let me back up and say that, having driven with a grip weight of 1.0, I CAN control the car with high grip weight, and do almost the same lap times, but it's very twitchy. These profiles allow for much more consistency. I'll be at a kart race tomorrow, but will be back in the evening to see if anyone has problems or feedback on these. -- Pat Dotson Pat Dotson wrote: > > I have three different ff profiles for F1 2001. ISI wasn't BS'ing when they said they were going to do the FFB right. Thx ISI/EA, this is the best implementation of FFB ever, including GPL. Just wanted to ask you which MS wheel you are using because the - setting is all wrong for my MS FFB wheel. I have to use the opposite to get the right effects. Thanks so much, Pat! Do you have any recommendation as to the "steering sensitivity" (presumably linearity), X-axis sensitivity, and/or steering ratio for these wheels? I've tried everything from 12:1 to 15:1 with a TM/Guillemont FF wheel, and still can barely hold it on the road in a straight line. I can't be that bad.... --Steve Smith "Pat Dotson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Stephen, Please let us all know if you come up with good FFB parameters and/or in-game linearity, sensitivity, etc. settings. I have the same wheel and suffer the same issue. I can tell the potential is there for it to be great, but don't have the time to invest right now in endless fiddling (like I did for GPL). F1 2001 post-patch is looking pretty good!! Like I pointed out in previous posts, the steering sensivity concept in F1 2001 is out of this world. Set it to 50 % for full linear steering ( V shape). Lower than 50 % means U shape response, and over 50 % means a upside down U shape response (I refuse to use the word sensivity since it's one of those words that can mean several things and has no mathematical value)

Did you set FF in game to negative 100? This may be the same thing as setting all the individual values to negative, except is saves time. ;0) -- Joe Marques "STP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:whLL7.374$[email hidden]... > > "Pat Dotson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:[email hidden]... > > I have three different ff profiles for F1 2001. Yes, using the old gameport version. -- Pat Dotson STP wrote: > > "Pat Dotson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:[email hidden]... > > I have three different ff profiles for F1 2001. Send me a wheel and I'll do one! :) Actually, you should be able to tune my settings to any wheel by adjusting the FFB steer force input max value. I have an more in-depth method for determining what that setting should be for an individual wheel that I can post later. -- Pat Dotson Iain Mackenzie wrote: > > Hey Pat, how about one for the Guillemot Ferrari? > Iain > > "Pat Dotson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:[email hidden]... > > I have three different ff profiles for F1 2001. I set steering axis sensitivity to 0%, and everything else to 100%. My steering lock runs between 15 and 18 degrees, sometimes up to 20. -- Pat Dotson Stephen Smith wrote: > > Thanks so much, Pat! > > Do you have any recommendation as to the "steering sensitivity" (presumably > linearity), X-axis sensitivity, and/or steering ratio for these wheels? > I've tried everything from 12:1 to 15:1 with a TM/Guillemont FF wheel, and > still can barely hold it on the road in a straight line. Just out of curiousity -- Why would you set the FF to a negative value? I tried it, and the forces felt like the wheel wanted to turn AWAY from center, rather than toward center. In other words, the wheel got "lighter" the more I turned it. I'm using an LWFF, btw. I find that a positive value for FF is more realistic. Joe Marques wrote:

The FF effects will be screwed up, and feel the way you described. For those wheels, you need to make the FFB steer force max input a negative number, then the effects feel right. It sounds like the newer versions of the MS FF wheel don't have that problem, and can use a positive number. -- Pat Dotson

Hi Pat, thanks for the great setups! using the logitech FF and your setup is way better than the default one. btw are there any equally good setups for Nascar4? thanks Jeffrey ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat Dotson" <[email hidden]> Newsgroups: rec.autos.simulators Sent: Saturday, November 24, 2001 7:56 AM Subject: F1 2001 FF Profiles

Agree. Totally. Olav, Well, what I was hoping for was like GPL's linearity "slider," a kind of a reversed "L" shape: the steering around TDC (top dead center) is slow, but as you input more steering, the response speeds up. (This is how it's done in the real world, BTW, for those of you who don't yet have drivers' licenses.) I'll give it a try in a couple of positions and see if it starts to make any sense. FWIW, engineers use the terms "response" and "gain." Papy's system is hi-response, hi-gain, which is like a race car. ISI's system is lo-response, hi-gain, which is more like a passenger car (a BIG American passenger car), or, for that matter, the Queen Mary. --Steve "Olav K. Unfortunately, Nascar 4 doesn't allow the same type of modifications to the FF effects that F1 2001 does. I would like a good explanation of how the FF effects in N4 relate to steering movement. In F12K, you can tailor the effects to the characteristics of a particular wheel. I have a feeling that N4 is more of a one-size-fits-all approach. -- Pat Dotson Jeffrey3456 wrote: > > Hi Pat, > > thanks for the great setups! using the logitech FF and your setup is way > better than the default one. > btw are there any equally good setups for Nascar4?
