What's your racing seat like?

Sim racers show off their seats and cockpits

Posters described their sim racing seating, from office chairs, garden chairs and sofas to home-built rigs with real racing seats, a ProSeat and a commercial SimChassis pod. K O Sletten showed a three-monitor GPL setup run from three networked PCs, which also works online at the cost of three server slots. Hyperstimulator kits and the prices of high-end ECCI and TSW gear were also discussed.

My girlfriend slaps me on the side of the head from time to time. Otherwise, nothing special. Half my sim racing is done reclining on a comfy leather sofa, notebook on the coffee table, and a small CH joystick in my hands. Somehow it's rather incongruous to be piloting an Eagle through the twists and turns of the 'Ring and to be coddled in such comfort... I had been using an old ThunderSeat (subwoofer speaking directly to yer butt), but while it's great for flight sims (the A-10 Warthog's 30mm depleted-uranium cannon rounds cured a nasty case of hemmorhoids), driving sims don't have enuf bass. I recently got a ProSeat Saturday Night Special, built around a 15-in. aluminum Kirkey racing seat for $239.95 (less than a quarter of what most office seats cost) and am very satisfied with it. It has an oleopneumatic strut for height adjustment, and a locking lever for rake. While yer driving, yer clasped by a pair of giant hands (actually, side extensions) that keep you in place during violent maneuvers...except last night, when I bought the fence @ MIS. Looks nice. I know Recaro also does "office" chairs. Do you have a way to keep it from rolling around? Here it is, have a look. This is one of three ever build and the company SimChassis no longer exist. Recaro office chairs cost like $1500. Very nice, tho. The ProSeat is more of a working man's seat (or working DRIVER'S seat). My ProSeat came with two sets of casters; with and without locks to keep it in place. Failing that: furniture casters. Very nice, Steve. (Sure beats wasting yer time on case mods.) HyperStimulator still exists, AFAIK. Their kits are expensive (ca. $2500 for a finished product...altho it looks exactly like a tub from a formula car), but you can DIY...if yer handy with woodowrking...which I'm not. I've made a cockpit of part from the local Salvage lot. I have a Car Seat, Gas break and Clutch assy, Hurst Shifter. All Fastended to a skid made from 2x4's. It sits under an adjustable drafting table. The best part is the working Clutch and StickShift. I have been looking into pattending the technology. Can you do that on N4? I have plenty of space on my desk to put 2 more monitors.. it is a L desk which would be perfect for it "K O Sletten" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Well I do not think that would work very well with N4, especially on OLR. Too bad, would be a fun setup to use "K O Sletten" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

From what I understand, yes. But it will cost the server 3 connections. What I mean is you will have to connect 3 computers to the server so if you have 19 people that want to race, 2 of them are going to be unable to connect. See in order to have three screens in GPL you have to use 3 seperate computers. Then each computer is set to a certain camera view and there you go. I think the only way to do this is online. I'm running a Hyperstimulator Model 3000. I don't have any complaints about it. The kits are about the same as a TSW or other high end wheel. And yes, they're still in business: http://www.hyperstimcanada.com/indexframe.html TB

Tony, Yer right: for ca. $3,000 US, you get a high-end wheel, pedals, racing seat, and chassis tub. Not bad. Wonder why the don't offer a US warranty, tho (and their site lists an address in BC under the finder for "Ontario" -- that ain't exactly just the other side of town!). --Steve "Tony Borroz" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:B82AE524.4BF1%[email hidden]... > I'm running a Hyperstimulator Model 3000. Hi Steve, I forget what the basic kit model is, something like $700 - 1000 if I remember correctly (which is about what a TSW/ECCI wheel costs). I know some people look at it as being a seat with a wheel and peddles attached, but the steering and peddle feel is really second to none (at least for me). The fact that it has this nifty cockpit (that I believe is modeled after a 96 Williams GP car) adds to it. Funny, I never noticed the warranty stuff. I know that Rory (the guy that runs Hyperstim Canada) supplied 6 or 10 units to the Players Racing Indy car team a number of seasons back. They took them around to a number of races (mainly in Canada), and had various yahoos beating on them literally all day long and had no problems whatsoever. I'd say that if you have warranty concerns, email Rory directly and ask. Mine's been just fine and completely glitch free for the past 3+ years. Also, they're going to be coming out with a USB version quite soon, and another version to hook up to a Playstation/xBox/etc as well (if you're into that sort of thing). TB

Tony, ECCI (I have one--in daily use for 4 years with never a hitch) gave up on the "civilian" market after their cheapest model went north of 2 grand (they now sell only to commercial/industrial customers--Silicon Raceway & such). I've never understood why the TSW stuff is so expensive. Yes, it's built in limited quantities with good quality materials, but they have the jigs and sheet steel is cheap. The wheel liike like it came from a 1973 Plymouth Scamp. People love their TSWs, tho.... --Steve "Tony Borroz" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:B82B9A89.4ED6%[email hidden]... > Hi Steve, > > I forget what the basic kit model is, something like $700 - 1000 if I > remember correctly (which is about what a TSW/ECCI wheel costs). .. wrote: > What's your setup to simulate a cockpit like environment? At the moment I don't simulate a cockpit like enviroment. I have a lovely, old, oak office desk. The sort a grade school teacher might have had circa 1930. I do a bit better with the seat though. I took the driver's seat of a 1958 Porsche 356 and mounted it to a modern office chair base. I've got a pile of materials collected with the intent of building a dedicated GPL center, but havn't gotten around to it yet. It will more closely resemble a sedan cockpit though. It really is a better seating and control position. The purpose of the extreme reclining position in '67 formula cars is for aerodynamics, which proved more valuable than an ideal driving position. We don't have that problem with sims, and I'll go for ideal driving position, rather than historical accuracy. KFG
