Where to get GP1, and abandonware versus warez

A request for Geoff Crammond's original Grand Prix (World Circuit) for a laptop was answered with a link to an abandonware site. Txl called this hypocritical given the group's stance against warez, and others defended abandonware for titles no longer sold, while some pointed out that GP1 was still available on budget compilations and from retailers. GP2 was suggested as a better option for a laptop.

Maybe "old" warez don't count? Anyway, I still say if he's using anything resembling a current laptop, he should go buy GP2 and forget about GP1. It will run on anything above a P166 and be a lot more fun. Stephen "Txl" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:3c06038d$0$32577$[email hidden]...

I think there's a difference between really old software that is impossible to find in the stores anymore and software that is still being sold. Also that's the category that the Underdogs are basing 'abandonwarez' on. If it's not being sold anymore, they put it on their site, if it can be bought they puts links to places that sell it on their site (even online order companies). But I agree, it's a fine thread to decide what is Abandonwarez and what is not. But it's nice to see those golden oldies are being kept alive thanks to sites as the Underdogs. Oldies from an age where gameplay was more important than fancy graphics.. sigh.. Andre /Kick Off II still beats Fifa 2002

I wonder what is the legal value of this in front of a coyright specialized attorney... I'm not trying to sell or promote anything here, i'd just like to have SOME (and not you specifically you francois) realize how hypocritical their attitude towards warez is...

The letter of copyright law is something like 50 years (I read this once during my P.Eng. exams and promptly forgot it). However, if you're not selling that copy of GP1, and it's not available in a shop, it would take a pretty determined copyright lawyer to come after you! :-) Stephen

Point taken, but then again . . . I plead the fifth! It is not like this site is hiding away in some area with just an IP address and all those pop-up links that drive you nuts, oh wait, I don't know what I am talking about, as I have never been to a warez site :-O Then again in reading the FAQ, one of the questions is about the legality of the site and well . . . I guess I should have read this prior to posting. I d/l the game and looked at it and chuckled and then thought, "I should try this at home" then I remembered that my Act Labs setup will not work under DOS and well I really don't think it is going to be that much different than the GP3 I already own, so I removed it. I really cannot see too many people keeping this software on their computer and playing it, but weirder things have happened. So officially -- I am sorry, to all, for posting this link! EB, Game, HMV, ... many of these stores were certainly selling the game earlier this year. In the case of EB/Game they were selling it as a twin pack with Grand Prix Manager 1. -- AG Remove removes from address to remove anti-spam measures. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Alan Gauton E-Mail [email hidden] Never for me the lowered banner, never the last endeavour! They are not doing anything as if they were bad people.. There is nothing else then entertainment and pleasure to be taken from those games, there's no money to do anymore. Just check out websites like The Underdogs or Mame, which are known by every publisher on the planet yet they try to make available many pre-Win95 games, unless the developper still has that title in the shelves (LucasArts, Sierra, etc..). Even if they say "we are ok with that", it's technically illegal by the law, but everybody is concent morally to say it's legal.
