Best modern rally sim for the PC

Asked for the best rally sim, posters split between Rally Masters for physics, Rally Championship 2000 for authentic stages despite weak physics, Rally Trophy for good physics on historic cars, and Colin McRae Rally 2 for fun. Rally Championship Xtreme was criticised for a large steering dead zone, with DXTweak suggested as a workaround that did not work on XP. Posters also explained why most rally games use fictional stages.

I happen to love Colin McRae Rally 2, but I'm anxious to get a copy of Rally Trophy soon. Scott PA-Scott "Bart Brown" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Opinions, please... > > BB
Rally Trophy isn't "modern" Andre :) Thanks, Alex PS, Id say Rally Masters for best modern rally sim "Andre Warringa" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I seem to be nearly alone here, but I like nearly everything abt. Rally Championship except the math (scoring); it cheats. Its successor, Rally Championship Xtreme, is supposed to be dumbed down (and sounds like it still has overly sensitive controls), but it *may* be worth a look. Impossible to find...so far, at least here in the States. --Steve Smith "Bart Brown" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Opinions, please... > > BB
the MAJOR pb with rally Xtreme or rally champ 2002 as it is called here is that you can't set the controls right....you have about 20% deadzone in the steering and there is NO way to set this right.... Not QUITE true: I've used DXTweak to reduce the dead-zone to zero and set the sensitivity to "Numbnuts" and I can just barely keep it on the tarmac (hairpin turns take abt. 1/8th of a turn of my LWFF). For all that, it's still easier to control, IMO, than F1 2001...and I am no stranger to controller issues. Or racing sims. --Steve Smith "Txl" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:3c06b1aa$0$203$[email hidden]... > the MAJOR pb with rally Xtreme or rally champ 2002 as it is called here is > that you can't set the controls right....you have about 20% deadzone inthe > steering and there is NO way to set this right.... > > > "Stephen Smith" <[email hidden]> a crit dans le message denews: > V9yN7.82655$[email hidden]... > > I seem to be nearly alone here, but I like nearly everything abt. "Bart Brown" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Opinions, please... Well, depends on what's your cup of tea... I think most people here would agree about the following: Rally Championship (i.e. Mobil 1 Rally Championship) has good stages, very authentic, but the driving physics are horrendous. The cars don't seem to turn by the wheels, the grass is "sticky"... But the terrain is great... Rally Masters (i.e. Test Drive: Rally Masters) has completely fictional stages, but the "feel" of rallying sure shows... Sliding a car around a corner can almost be FELT, and the super-special stages adds some truly hair-raising moments as you go one-on-one with another driver. Not quite enough stages though. Colin McRae Rally 2 has fictional stages, but more stages. It's like right between the two titles above in terms to authenticity and fun. Car physics are quite good. --KC

There's a front-end launch proggie that let's you tweak all the physics. The worst offender, IMO, is the superfragilisticexpedaliocious braking power, but you can reduce that to any level you like. Rally Masters is very good - I'm not sure how anyone could describe the graphics as 'grainy' - they're as smooth and colourful as any racing game I've seen on my machine. I first got the game when I had a TNT2 and it was a bit average, but with a GeForce, the game really comes to life and runs at a liquid smooth frame rate. The physics are almost up there with Rally Trophy and are possibly better in some ways. Colin McRae Rally (the original) is the best choice for slightly less serious rallying - lots of fun to be had. The car doesn't seem to slide properly in the sequel. Australian buyers of "Commandos II" get a voucher for a free copy of Rally Masters!! - 2 kick-ass games!
