What gives? Just dusted off SCGT and installed it, along with a nice heap of user addons...but my framerates are >< close to outright unplayable at times!!! I honestly remember this game running much better before I upgraded this box, which was a Celeron 300 @ 450, 192MB RAM, and a pair of Voodoo2s, Win98SE. Now, same motherboard, hard drive, and a few other bits, but a Celeron 900 @ 928, 512MB RAM, and a GeForce 2 MX200 32MB. GPL runs 36 very solidly at 1024x768. But in SCGT, even down at 640x480, I still get periods of framerates in the high teens-low twenties. It seems to be a polygon issue of sorts, as it's worst when there's a lot of cars visible, but I've also gotten it just going into turn 2 at Lime Rock with no other cars around, it seems even that track loads it up too much. Detailed system specs below. Anything I'm missing? Abit BH6 rev 1.02 motherboard Intel Celeron 900MHz overclocked to 928 (103MHz FSB) on an Asus slotket GeForce 2 MX200 32MB AGP (Shuttle makes it, but it's as reference a board as any I've ever seen =) Windows XP Professional 512MB of PC133 SDRAM (2x128, 1x256) IBM Deskstar 8.4GB 5400RPM IDE hard drive 52X CDROM Milhouse
What kinda wheel do you have? SCGT was very sensitive to FF if I recall. When I played it I had a Microsoft Sidewinder FF Joystick and the frame rates went into the toilet with FF turned on but were great when I turned it off. That was on a PII 333 with Voodoo2 SLI, running 1024x768 at most tracks, 800x600 at some like Vegas. So your system should rock. You've downloaded the 1.551 patch too I assume? IIRC, there is a mirror patch that improves framerates dramatically. If you don't need the mirror, turn it off. Rob's right about the FF. And IMO, it sucks bad enough that you're not missing anything. Dale.

We think alike! I just re-installed SCGT the other day and have been messing around with it again. We also have similar system specs. I have a P3/933 GeForce 2 MX... I don't have the same problem as you, so I'm thinking there must be something you're missing. First, don't use the framed mirror. It can easily eat 10fps. Not sure why, but it's a killer. I used the unframed version and still get nice, smooth play (haven't checked my rates). It's possible that your GeForce is actually slower at 640x480 than at 1024x768. Never confirmed it, but I remember reading on one of the hardware sites that GeForce performance was worse at 800x600 than at higher resolutions. Perhaps that also holds true for 640x480. Can you be more specific as far as add-ons go? I'm only using the 1.551 patch and the Advanced Options editor. Is it possible one of your sound patches, cockpits, etc are screwing you up? SCGT is a great game. Like Viper Racing, it's one of those games you can come back to every few months and it feels fresh again. Dumped the FF and did notice quite an improvement...and also, the performance hardly changes from resolution to resolution. 800x600 seems to be the optimum, as in either 640x480 or 1024x768, the occasional stutters around the track seem more 'pronounced'... Going to go look for the mirror hack (I remember that vaguely =) now... And the framerate is nasty right around other vehicles. Especially pulling out of the pits. As soon as the last car disappears in the mirror, it's smooth, even in 1024x768 with all details maxed. The patches/updates: 1.551 VisDam2 Ban Scene.MAS A few addon tracks, and a TON of addon cars Alldash (though it seems not many people paid attention to the naming format in that, did they? =P) Milhouse "Dale Green" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > IIRC, there is a mirror patch that improves framerates dramatically. It all depends what cars you are seeing. Some car builders built thier cars with tons of polygons....they look great...but the KILL the framerate. Experiment with removing a car one at a time and see if that hurt/helps the framerate. dave henrie "Milhouse" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:mXUP7.37766$[email hidden]... > Dumped the FF and did notice quite an improvement...and also, the > performance hardly changes from resolution to resolution. 800x600 seemsto > be the optimum, as in either 640x480 or 1024x768, the occasional stutters > around the track seem more 'pronounced'... > > Going to go look for the mirror hack (I remember that vaguely =) now... > > And the framerate is nasty right around other vehicles. It's almost like the game maxes out at 25fps (kinda like GPL's fixed 36fps). Haven't tried FRAPS to see what's happening. I also was disappointed that my current system didn't play this "old" game better. Dale.
I think you've got it...and very few include lower-polygon models. =P I suppose it's a bit of a limitation of the engine, as well, not being too terribly efficient at drawing cars like that...
