IL-2 Sturmovik joke 'hate' post and off-topic chat
Morgan Boof jokingly 'blamed' Andre Warringa for getting him hooked on the IL-2 Sturmovik flight sim demo. Sim racers discussed IL-2, flight-sim controllers and pedal drivers, and took jabs at Ubisoft over the unreleased F1 Racing Championship patch. The thread wandered into Tolkien, Kubrick, Star Wars and Monty Python, with condolences for a member's bereavement.
Automated summary.
To the evil Mr Warringa.....
Now where do i start...?
Let's get going then,i am a hardcore sim racer, have been for 8 years and
never really tried much else.
BUT..!!
Then i see your 'satan' post not long ago and i feel compelled to inform
you....
I HATE YOU WITH A PASSION...!!!!!!!
Only hated three men in my life and you become number four..BIG STYLE.
At least the other three were referees in crucial footie matches, but unless
you have knobbly knees and dress in black, you are from a different ilk.
So i leave you with this Mr Warringa, dont ever catch my eye again with a
post,or we could be talking a life term for me in Shawshank.!!!!

p.s If i crash this CHUFFIN il-2 thing again i will
screeeeeeeeeeeaaammmm, and they blow me up before i've got settled and they
come from all 18 sides of me with bloody bombs and then i am expected to
corkscrew to within 3 inches of the ground to survive and even then 40 tanks
have me in their sights and.....and....and...aaaaaagggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh i
hate you WARRINGA..!!

I just ordered myself the Saitek x45, a flightsim joystick with around
576384 programmable buttons, 28 switchhatch buttons and 1
rocketlauncher button, and a separate throttle control.
Together with my ch pro pedals I should be all set :)
So in this way IL2 also resembles GPL: taking away all my savings just
in order to enjoy the sim to the fullest :-/

I use to do a little flight simming and have a Saitek X35/X36 HOTAS system.
Although I haven't done any flight simming since MS CFS2 first came out.
I've been looking at IL-2 since its been getting pretty good reviews. I
wouldn't mind doing some flight combat again... even if I would be mostly
target practice! LOL
How is the online component and your general opinion? Especially since I
have a similar system as you described.

My general opinion is that IL2 is a new benchmark, and not only for
flightsims. The attention to detail is amazing, graphics, sound, how
smooth it runs, how real the handling of the planes feel, it excells
in all those areas. Like GPL it was made by people with a true love

Use the rudders.. yup, even taking off is hard.. try taking off with a
fully bomb-loaded plane during a thunderstorm.. good luck :)

And your point is Ubi Soft also releases excellent sims like IL2
besides releasing unfinished beta sims like F1RC, while bullshitting
about a patch which the really stupid people among us actually
believed in?
In that case we agree :)

be a problem to use analog pedals with it, too.
For X36 there is a modified driver on http://home.att.net/~stickworks/swdownld.html
(X36DRV04.ZIP). I still didn't try it, the needed steps to use it are sounding
a little nasty. Please, let me know, if the X45 works w/ the pedals. Maybe Saitek
fixed their drivers... ;)

I'm using the Stickworks driver so that I can use my CH Pedals with an X-36.
The process is very simple and very effective. It really makes a difference
when you're strafing an armoured column in IL-2 and can flick left and right
with the pedals. Give it a try, you may like it. Also it is really easy to
fix if it doesn't work.

Warner was able to mess up his work after his death, it's a shame (it's like

0.02 cents to anyone who knows that reference :)
about episode 2 ymenard, i hope its better than 1. I'm assuming that
the irritating little boy is gone and that jar jar's role is reduced
ten fold.
i watched the mummy returns last night and was struck by how much
better the kid was in the movie. didn't annoy me as much as the young
anakin did.
that reminds me of my favourite episode 1 joke.
why do all the star wars fans keep watching episode 1 over and over
again?
to convince themselves that they loved the movie.
just my opinion of course.
oh, one last thing, and just as off-topic.
some guy phoned into a local radio station complaining that in episode
one, Darth Vader is made out to be Jesus Christ. Apparently the lack
of a father for Anakin means that his mother had a virgin birth and
yadda yadda yadda (yawn).
what next?

They only censored one scene right? I downloaded that scene from the
internet, and imho it doesn't add anything to EWS.
Also doesn't change anything to the fact that I think EWS is one of

Thanks for the tips guys.. I didn't expect a problem at all (saitek on

But good to hear good old Stickworks brings a solution - again :)

I don't think much has changed.. to be honest the x45 is quite ugly,

My friend, those are not "the good old days". The true "good old days" were
the days of Infocom text adventures. You had words to read, and word to
type. That was it. No fancy 3D cards, no gigahertz processors, but
strangely, the images conveyed were some of the most vivid, and the gameplay
was some of the best. Funny thing, that imagination thing. :-)

Erm, the Hobbit computer game was a text adventure, where you had to
type in sentences. But hey, what do I know, I didn't get a computer

You're telling me.. I finished ALL Infocom adventures.. mostly on my
own ;)
Quite some people are still making new adventures for the Infocom
parser, which is all being released as public domain. Some of them are
truly on the same level as the Infocom classics..
If you're interested I'll mail you the urls when I get home.

Infocom adventures were without graphics, pure text..
The Hobbit had revolutionary graphics when it was released :)

Thanks, but I barely have time to throw in a few laps with GPL or auger into

I'll bet it's
still 80% plus sim-related. Perhaps you haven't realized that you can
arrange your newsgroup by threads and ignore the off-topic stuff. The
interesting thing is that usually people read right to the end of an
off-topic news thread before complaining.
The newsgroup is not only a dry, sterile questions in, facts out service.
It's a community, and people like to occasionally diverge and chat about a
different topic with people who they know. People who stick around here a
few years figure that out. It's like going to a conference. The conference
might be about neurosurgery, and you spend 80% of the time discussing
neurosurgery, but occasionally you talk about something else. Do you pick
up your drink and go to a different room just because you have changed the
topic?
Nothing elitist about it, and the people who are currently enjoying these OT
rambles are the very ones who keep this group going with useful, sim-related
information.

Hey, there was an email going around before the Aussie census, asking
everyone to put down "Jedi Knight" as their religion. Apparently if
10,000 people nominate it, it becomes an "official" religion.
Problem was that the census office started emailing a warning about
it, threatening $10,000 fines for falsifying census statements. No fun
and no sense of humour.

That's where we basically differ opinions, It's one of the profound and
intense scene Kubrick has ever shot, the whole scene is incredibly tight and
disturbing. The fact is, the DVD Region 1 should had been uncensored,
because heck it's a DVD for the hardcore fans. Heck, it's still censorship,

Ok, I'm amazed by the Radeon 7500, now I'm thinking: what diff would a GF3 Ti 200 make?

mind you, watching Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Billy Dee Williams and

good acting at all. still the movies are still great despite that. i
sort of fondly overlook them (the performance, i mean) as I still
enjoy the first 3 movies so much.
here's hoping for episode 2. the whole clone wars title makes it
sound very 'B' movie-ish. I'm sure that could have had a more

The actor acts the way the director wants him to act, remember. It's the
way he is scripted. Anakin was not meant to be funny, nor the type of
emotions of the little kid in the Mummy Returns (which was an awful waste of
celluloid I say).

I know Andre, I know (don't tell me how to fly a prop, bud). Reduced to
keyboard here though as I gave my TM FCSII, WCS throttle and rudder pedals
to someone who still has time left to invest in flight sims. Strange that,
haven't seen him around since IL2 release. Even more so as he's usually a
bit of a jet jockey.<g>
Anyhow, I gave up flight simming after I got kicked and temporarily banned
from a Warbirds server after breaking away from a reserve position in a
bomber escort squadron to help another player I knew (who was under attack).
I don't know how the online scene has evolved... are there still saddos

the business end of a Typhoon. ;-))

K.. maybe I didn't like Episode I also because of the MAJOR hype, at

Which scene has been removed from the zone 1? I personally think that
the film could be a few minutes shorter and still be as powerful, but
for a few minutes, i don't mind if a scene is heightened by a more
lingering shot or two. i'm no movie expert or anything, but although
i think it is a very good film, i've enjoyed movies like 2001 more.
Its all a question of taste, imo, and as others have repeatedly told
me, i have none. Hell, 'Top Secret' is in my all time top 10 fave

Yeah but Star Wars had to steal the whole Luke/Leia bit from Tolkein.
Aragorn, son of Arathorn, the Future ....(well, I don't want to spoil movie

And look at the secondary bad guys....everybody knows Peter Cushing (Grand

Yeah, but Tolkien probably lifted that from Wagner's tetralogy of operas "The
Ring of the Nibelungen" in which Siegried and Sieglinda, twin brother and
sister, are lovers. And of course Wagner's story is derived from many old
Germanic legends, epics, sagas .... Not that there's anything wrong with that
(borrowing thematic material from other works, that is - I'm not condoning

I think that any new (legitimate) religion would be accepted if there
were enough followers, but the Census people got wind of our little
scam early. So they decided to foil it early by sending out press

i assumed so from the start, but i'm glad for the confimation, all of
you.
in another window, i am typing up the 'summarised' version of the
whole day for my brother & uncles in toronto & vancouver respectively.
reliving the day in an email is the only way i can concievably explain
it to the 2 of them without going through some tissues :)
the funny thing is that my eulogy/tribute was actually pretty funny.
i can't believe that all of us was crying. it was sort of like the
ultimate bad audience for a lousy comedian. i'm sure my uncle
approved though :)

istoff
Well, since we're here chatting about literature. Why not make a really
memorable film and game about those two books. It will begin and end with
Ring des Nibelungen and Lord of the Ring somewhere between the parts of Ring
des Nibelungen. We could even make it a live roleplaying event on the
Nrburgring. And ask John Frankenheimer to make a movie about it. The 1000
Km of the Nrburgring season 1967 would be a good setting.
Greetings

Have you ever seen the funeral of one of the Monty Python members,
where John Cleese makes a speech? One of his funniest moments ever,
the whole audience was laughing madly. Superb :)

That must have been a Freudian slip ... Colin Chapman was the founder of
Lotus The late, great member of Monty Python was Graham Chapman.

I dunno if you think you're having a spritual revelation or what, but
the signal/noise ratio of this group (and usenet in general) hasn't
changed much in the last 10 or so years. I haven't read usenet
regularly since 95 or so aside from popping by a few groups every year
or two and I'm not entirely sure that this phenomenon you're pointing
out is particularly unique, new, or confined to this group.

[ spoiler ahead! ]
it was graham chapman's memorial service. around the end of 1990 i
think. bbc filmed it, and showed it on telly a while later. john
cleese becomes the first person at a british memorial serivce to say
the word f**k, there were lots of related celebs in the congregation,
and they all sing 'always look on the bright side of life' at the end.
the whole thing starts off solemn and turns hilarious in an instant.
and a quick search found this:

(is this the right room for OT stuff?)
