I installed F1 2001 (+ 1.0.7.4 beta patch + no cd patch) last night, over at
a friend of mine.
Basic specs: P3 1Ghz, 256MB SDRAM, Radeon 64MB DDR vivo (Omega drivers),
Terratec 1024 soundcard, LWFF wheel, Win98.
Everything installed fine, menus seemed ok, went through all the options. So
then it's time to take the Ferrari out for a spin. But the in-game graphics
were so corrupted (every circuit, every race type), it just made the game
totally unplayable: you could only see part of the road in front of you, and
above this point the graphics were very badly disturbed (as if the textures
were very bright and liquid, and getting mixed up as you drove). So from
left to right, part of the road and part of the sky is completely messed up,
but above that 'belt' the sky suddenly looks normal again! It was like
driving in hell.
Anyway, we tried all sorts of things to cure this, to no avail. Looked
around the web for people with similar problems, messed with some settings
in the f1car.gen file, tried lower resolution, tried 16 bit instead of 32
bit, tried medium 3D settings, uninstalled, reinstalled (couldn't run game,
had to uninstall patch separately), installed latest Omega drivers,
reinstalled DirectX 8.1...
What more can one do? (apart from jumping from a rather high building)
Anyone recognize the problem?
Ice D
Ps: can you take screenshots in the game?
F1 2001 graphics corruption on a Radeon
Ice D reported severe graphical corruption running F1 2001 on a friend's Radeon with Omega drivers. Suggestions included checking display settings, trying refresh rates and doing a full ATI driver purge and reinstall, which had fixed similar 'belt' artefacts for Sideshow Bob. The thread descended into ribbing between Voodoo5 and Radeon owners.
Automated summary.

Run sfine on the R8500. Maybe you have a setting in your display properties
that is causing it. Try looking for W buffer and turning that off or some
other option that might be causing it. I loaded Operation Flashpoint
yesterday and it was a mess of triangles. Went through all the options in my
desktop properties settings for D3D and found it was caused by having
Wbuffer support on. The Omega drivers turn that on by default.
F12001 works fine with that option on though so not sure what your problem
is.

Maybe I'll do some more testing with different settings, but my experience
with this sort of thing is that the game will probably end up on a pile,
labelled: "Permission Denied!"
It's just too bad.

Ice D: I corrupted my Radeon 7500 drivers last week and got a similar
effect to what you did. My solution:
Remove every ATi driver/software you can, boot to safe mode and remove all
ati* files from the system folder, delete all ATi registry keys. Reboot and
reinstall the ATi drivers then software.

When you say similar effect, did you mean similar in F1 2001? Or did you
have problems in other games / applications?
Anyway, I'll think about doing what you suggested.
Thanks,
Ice D

Specs:
Aopen case (300W)
Asus CUSL2-C mobo
Pentium III 1 Ghz
256MB PC133 SDRAM (Crucial)
IBM 40GB (60XP)
ATI Radeon 64MB DDR vivo
Terratec DMX X-Fire 1024
It's a pretty decent system, should be able to run F1 2001 with all bells
on. Anything else?

Sorry but I have to think the problem is your video card. Especially
since you were getting corrupt graphics. Are you using DX8.1
along with the latest drivers? Also I would suggest trying different
refresh frequencies at different resolutions. There are a bunch to
choose from on my V5 5500, and I assume the same is true
for your Radeon.
BTW, I was mostly joking about getting the V5 5500, but the fact
is mine is still kicking and there is no way I would replace it. Certainly
not for a Radeon :-)

If my suggestion of trying different refresh frequencies and different
resolutions doesn't work, you really have no choice but to do what
Ice D suggested.
Unless you want to give my real solution a shot :-)

First of all, it isn't really my problem, it's a pc of a friend of mine (as
I've said). I normally help him out, since he knows even less about
computers than myself... Anyway, I agree the videocard is the main suspect
here, it seems obvious. The difficulty is always pinpointing the problem to
a specific issue, because that could be a lot of things: drivers, DirectX,
OS, advanced settings, etc. Or maybe a bad combination of some of these
things, which makes it even more difficult to trace.
He's had a few problems before, with games that gave blue screens randomly
(mostly Microsoft titles). The soundcard is the suspect there. But I've
never seen a game produce such weird graphic artifacts with the Radeon 64MB
on this system. In fact, the games I've seen looked very good, even
outstanding. So I'm quite convinced that there must to be a way to make F1
2001 work properly.

Well, you can keep your V5 as far as I'm concerned. I'm getting a Radeon
8500, despite this particular problem. The card has a lot of potential,
although I admit the current drivers still need improvement. But I have
faith!
Amen.

Yeah, in F1 2001 only I got that "belt" effect you mentioned. I was having
other major video issues as well... NFS:PU wouldn't run, 3D screensavers
crashed the system, 3DMark2001 crashed the system, etc.
In my case I had just upgraded from a Radeon32DDR to a Radeon 7500 and some
remanant of the 32DDR's drivers was causing trouble (I suspect something
related to DirectX). I did the complete reinstall method I mentioned and
I've been stable for several days now. F1 2001 is perfect and 3DMark2001
works.
Dale.

Ah, so you've experienced the 'belt' effect as well, cool (at least I'm not
the only one). Do you happen to know which driver version you were using,
and what drivers you use now (the Omega drivers or the ATI one's)?
By the way, is it really important to perform the drastic reinstall method?
Do you have bad experience doing it the simple way (by that I mean: just
running the installer for the new drivers)?
Cheers,
Ice D

ATI, most recent XP drivers (drivers 3276 - same driver set for Radeon 32DDR
(7200) as the 7500)

Usually the installer works fine. I've had four or five ATi cards now and I
update the drivers each time a new one is released... so that's a lot of
updates. I've probably had to do the "drastic install method" five times
over several years.

You were responding to Roy Berube, who stated this:
"Just last week when I was in a computer shop buying the latest and greatest
parts, they had people buying tnt2 cards and the slowest duron available.
And these are then the kind of people who complain about software running
poorly. Makes you want to scream don't it."
And because I'm the one complaining here, he must have been talking about me
(it seemed that way anyway). And then you went on about that, saying that
many people primarily consider the price tag when they buy hardware. This is
not the case here. The system (that belongs to a friend) was built with
quality in mind, and also the price tag of course, but to a lesser extent.
For instance, it's got Crucial CAS2 memory, instead of some cheap no-name
DIMMs.
But never mind, enough said about this.

Runs it just as well as a GF3 and even better than a GF3 until the patch. I
sold my V5 looong time ago.V5 is a nice card so long as you only use it to
view screenshots, do some office apps and play Mine Sweeper.
