Google Groups archive back to 1981 prompts r.a.s. nostalgia
David Buttery noted Google's Usenet archive now reached back to 1981 and joked about missing r.a.s. milestones. Members dug up their oldest posts, the first GPL rumours from 1996 and ymenard's early 'Indytrack' posts. Phil Lee found the first mention of GPLRank, and Uwe Schuerkamp and others recounted its origins, crediting Don Scurlock with the handicap idea.

It was interesting to see my old messages

LOL, this was one of my first posts.. notice the last sentence :D
---------------------------
Last night I had a really really great time driving in GPL with the
force feedback on....
only to wake up and realize I had been dreaming.
The patch really has to come very soon now, I think it's not really
healthy now that I even start dreaming about it....
Why all the secrecy about the patch? Why doesn't papy keep us informed
on the status of the patch? We are all waiting months for it now,
surely they can release some kind of expected release date?
Why not keep us informed on the status like Jack does with his GPaL?

Now, what I really wanna know is....
When was the LAST post concerning folks who took a perfectly functioning
system for GPL and then got a tnt card because it got 3 to 5 more FPS in
Quake.(and of course this topic will include the subnote that none of those
who DID swap out TnT cards ever played Quake.) And then came crying to RAS
because GPL was broken after the swap.

Man... this latest addition to the Usenet archive is proving to be a serious
time waster. I was around when RAS started, but then signed off of RAS from
'96 until '98, so I missed the whole ymenard / Indyman thing. Now I've
gained some important insight into Francois' psyche!

There's some good prose behind all this. It sure ain't "good" trolling, but
heck if wanted to troll now, it would be pretty wicked (errr, some of you

How about this, the first mention of the GPLRank site on RAS, posted by me
on 3rd June 2000:
"I just found a new GPL site, GPLRank. Tim Wheatley gave its details on his
site. The site features a database which calculates your GPL handicap from
your player.ini file and provides an online ranking system. Very clever!
Thanks to Uwe Schuerkamp for putting it together. Excellent work.
Unfortunately I am languishing in 46th place out of 52 so if all you
slowpokes out there could submit times it would make my handicap look less
bad. Eldred this means you!
