I have my V5 underclocked and I can now run NASCAR Heat.
First, I only got NASCAR Heat for the TPTCC. My friends,
on the other hand, are jazzed to drive NASCAR. Will the
TPTCC setup allow NASCAR Heat to support the NASCAR features
that it originally had?
I've been to the TPTCC files page, and I've grabbed a bunch
of downloads. Carsets, the Multipatch, AI updates and carsets.
The document is emphatic about installing the multi-patch first.
So I have. Instructions then say to install the "DTM" patches
after the multipatch.
What does "DTM" stand for?
Suggested steps for preparing NASCAR Heat for TPTCC?
I think I have a copy of Cart II, is this required for
the Portland track? I live in Portland and am particularly
interested in that one.
Anything else I need to understand?
This is my second on-line sim, Porsche Unleashed had
opponent cars that would pass through each other without
damage or collision, at the option of the person who started
the game. Assuming that collisions count, are there going to
be races for beginners like me to learn to drive in traffic?
I'd feel bad knocking someone out by accident.
Thanks
Larry
Getting Heat setup is somewhat complicated but once you get the groundwork
done you can add literally dozens of mods at the clik of a button.
First, the TPTCC and all other mods work completely separate from the
Nascar core. So at any time you can launch Nascar, exit, hit the DTM icon
run that, then load CART, IRL, DESERT racing, Old Pickup trucks, 70's muscle
cars. etc etc. The only thing each mod shares are the tracks. The carsets,
setups, menu's are all specific to each mod.
DTM stands for Deutch Touring Masters or German Touring cars.(the years
depicted in the DTM mod are 1994 & 1995. You have Mercedes, Alfa Romeo, and
Opel...plus a few home-made BMW's and even a Dodge Stratus)
(btw speedvision has been showing DTM races on weekends lately)
You don't need any other titles for the tracks. The Portland track is
converted from Cart: Precision Racing, not one of the Papyrus titles.
(Papyrus has a unique track file format that makes it much tougher to
convert those tracks for use with other sims.) Most of the new road-courses
have come from a motorcycle sim, GP 500.
******
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!
*******
I cannot stress enough how critical it is to have Nascr Heat installed on
the default C:\ drive. While you CAN run heat from just about anywhere,
the mod installers all look to the C:\ drive and your life will be full of
white cars or Nascar drivers rather than Colorful Champcars, DTM cars etc.
There are 3 patches for Nascar heat, the multipatch program was written by
Jan Kohl I think and it applies the patches for you in the proper order. If
it doesn't work, make sure you use all three patches in order.
The TPTCC page has a link to a yahoo mailing list, if you join there you
can get plenty of help from the many TPTCC members.
A new season will start just after new year's I think, the schedule was
just posted, but I haven't looked at it yet.
If you dload new cars, just make sure you unzip them in the dtm folder
which is inside NH.
C:\program files\hasbro interactive\nascar heat\DTM
The cars DO take damage when hitting each other or track obstructions.
When the Aerodynamics are hurt it's not a problem, but if your suspension
gets bent, it's tough to even crawl back to the pits.
Right now the league is running practice races most everynight on a
private server, plus there is a program called IRF that will allow you to
join many NH races including DTM, CART, IRL etc.
Most of us are new to DTM so we are all learning it as we go. Right now we
have two classes, the fast guys...A class and the turtles like me in the B
class. If we get many more drivers we may have to create a third division.
Feel free to join in...we are all making plenty of mistakes right now..

What I did:
Install Heat to the default directory on drive C:, my system
drive. I hate that.
run the multipatch.
Post question that started this thread.
Check for presence of
C:\program files\hasbro interactive\nascar heat\DTM
It's not there.
Run installation S/W in following order:
DTM main installer
DTM car updateDTM main installer
DTM car update 2
DTM Alfa Patch
DTM 1.1 patch
Brno
Donnington
Mugello v1.1
Indy Road Course
DTM 1.1 patch
The DTM directory is now there, but no icons.

I read this. I did an install of heat to default dir and hard drive.

Which patches are applied in the multipatch?
One more question:
Papy has always been credited with making very
accurate sims. Why did you choose NASCAR Heat as
the foundation for this series?
Thanks

But I didn't see if you ran the nocd/track patch.
If you don't have a run folder inside the NH main folder, then that could be
mucking things up. If the nocd/tracks patch isn't making a run folder
either rename your data folder or copy the data folder and name the copy to
: run.
The DTM folder or any mod folder won't be added until you run the mod.exe.

I haven't used the multipatch...Jan got it finished after I had the dtm
mod already running and I didn't want to tempt fate...however many of our
league members have used it with no problems...I 'think' it has the 3
patches, 1.1e, 1.3 and 1.5a. AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 1.5A NOT THE ORIGINAL
1.5 PATCH. When you are done patch NH, you can go to the options screens
and you'll see the version listed on the bottom right of the first options
screen.

We have used Papy sims for 6 years...most recently the N3 version which
ran online VERY VERY well. We felt we had taken N3 as far as
possible...most of the tracks were very familiar. The logical next step
would have been Nascar 4 but there are some problems getting it ready. So
far only 1 extra road course has been released, with another due by Xmas.
And nobody has found a way to change the body shape yet. So once a few of
our members sampled the DTM patch we did some testing and found it to be
very good. The cars are more lively than N3 but not quite up to the N4
level.
Warping seems to be a bit more problematic with Nascar Heat/dtm but we've
run 22 drivers on the fat client and I think 26 on the updated thin client
server. With more drivers than that signed up, we have decided on two
levels (at least) we did that offline several years ago when N99 was the
base sim for the tptcc patch.
good luck

I've got things running. Thanks. It would have
been nice if someone had put the file names in step
by step instructions.
Can I just use RAS for my questions? TPTCC is on
topic, discussion here might stimulate interest by a
broader audience, and I hate those F***ing forums
where you don't have nice things like threads grouped
together, indeted for navigation and collapsed,
spell checking, flexible search and other amenities
found in newsgroups.
Most important, you don't need to enable cookies
for newsgroups.
What road tracks are available? Where are they?
Is Portland available? I've lived here all my
life, and I'd like to take a spin at PIR. There was
talk in the forum about a race at PIR. I see
reference to a patch for Road Atlanta, but I don't
see PIR or Road Atlanta among my choice of tracks
when I start Heat.
Thanks
Larry
Thanks
Larry
And another thing Dave:
I like the bumper cam view, but I want it up at
eye-level. So I'm using that "Frame view" which
gives me a good view of the road.
I've never seen a race car with a digital tach.
Is there an analog tach? Can the mirror, and
instruments, be repositioned on the screen?
Thanks

Yup I don't see why not. I have cable and even with that speed I too hate
web based discussion forums. I'd much rather have the whole lot in my
email/newsgroup reader, which is how I have the messages delivered, no
threads but no web site either.

Portland(Cart: Precision Racing)

Aardvark(scratch built)
Sears Point
Watkins Glen

Indy roadcourse(F1 2001)
I 'think' that's all for now. I'm not sure where Road Atlanta is right
now, I'll check the yahoo group and see where the website is...
I have only been to one CART Champcar race in my life, it was several
years ago at Portland, great fun. Only about an 8 hour drive to the track

I've downloaded all the stuff from TPTCC, thank you Dave,
and tracks from HC Motorsports, thanks Uncle Fester.
I install, the drivers file from TPTCC, I assume this is
the car files for the drivers that have registered. Before
the race I can select a driver, but there is no graphic of
the cars in that display, and no BMWs or Mercedes are listed,
though I do see them in the race.
I'd like to add myself, and a car, to my local copy of
this file. How do I go about it? I suppose I'll register
my intentions to race at TPTCC sometime soon.
So I start a race at Portland. From the back. I'm
working my way up through the AI and a couple of laps in,
I suddenly get an track side camera view and a message box
pops up with the title "In Race Summary". I restart and
try again. Same thing. So I sit and watch this for
several laps. It seems we are running under caution,
messages roll by about some damaged cars. Finally, after
several laps, the race starts up and I'm behind the wheel
again, but the position board shows everyone is 3 laps
ahead of me.
Once more. Two or three laps in, I'm driving conservatively,
near the back of the 39 car field, and the voice says something
about a yellow flag as we enter single file onto the start of
the front straight. We pass a car that's spinning along the
right side of the track and the "In Race Summary" board pops up
again, and I watch for a while, the cars are acting very strangely.
Stopping and backing up. The race summary shows me as 18th, unless
most of the field backed up past me, this is unlikely. After
several laps I get board and quit. I saved the replay if this can
help.
So, what's happening?
When can I get on line with you folks?
Larry
ok first turn off the flags, that is what's causing the in-race sumary.
Either you punted somebody or the AI crashed somewhere and the game threw a
yellow flag. We can't use flags online, that is one of Heat's weaknesses.
Plus we race in the Euro style mainly and try to avoid yellows. If there is
an ABSOLUTE bollux we'll either restart or call a yellow with the chat
function and group everyone up. Thats very rare tho.. That should be in
the SETUP menu at the track.
you'll have the option for hardcore/expert/easy , race length, etc...and
there will be a toggle for flags, set that to none. Turn off the ghost
mode. several of the homemade tracks have a problem with that...
You should be running hardcore with tire/fuel wear set to 1x. Set the
pack for 22 cars...at least one of the tracks..(donnington I think doesn't
work well if you have a larger # of cars).
Many of the addon cars DO NOT have a picture. So if you are scrolling
down the list of cars, and you see a car name but no car/driver picture,
don't sweat it. That's apparently a tough part to track down and most of
the dtm cars have been submitted without car picts. As long as you see
the Merc's, Opels, and Alfa's in the car list, you are ok.
Now choosing your car. first scan the list of default car #'s. Those for
the original Mercs.(the ones with pictures) If your car has the same #
you'll have to add a digit to keep them separate. If there already is a #27
but you have that #, then in the text lines below we'll use # 927.
This should be covered at the tptcc website, but just in case here is how
you get YOUR car in the field.
use windows explorer and navigate to the DTM folder inside of Heat. find
the file drivers.txt, double clik on that to open it with notepad. Take a
look at the format for each car. the append a similar group of lines to
name your car
don't worry if your drivers.txt doesn't match exactly. scroll down to the
bottom, the last few entries may look like this:
table Driver
number 38
name Dave Henrie
chassis alfa
rank 1
race_image 100
body_style fcar
end
table Driver
number 43
name Steve Lovas
chassis opel
race_image 100
body_style fcar
end
end
type the exact same lines or cut and paste the last group. stick it so it's
just above the last END.
so for Larry Lindstrom(say #27 opel) it should look like this...
...
end
table Driver
number 927
name Larry Lindstrom
chassis opel
race_image 100
body_style fcar
end
end
Then when you boot up dtm you see your name listed and you will be able to
drive your own car....PROVIDED YOU HAVE A CAR FILE IN THE DTM FOLDER. You
can choose a default car or have a custom painted one. put the custom car
files in the dtm folder. so if your car is car927.tex then make sure it's
in the dtm folder. Nascar Heat and each mod all have their own drivers.txt
file and their own carsets so make sure you are working in the proper
subfolder.
Email me at [email hidden] for the main dtm server address. Also check
the yahoo egroup for pickup races. Several nights a week somebody will host
a few races. Tues & thurs at 9pm est are the official practice sessions but
those have been filling to capacity. Also IRF is a multiplayer host program
for Heat that allows you to join any of the Heat mods. Nascar, DTM, CART,
IRL, if you have the mod installed, you can race online if there is somebody
hosting publically(sp?).
whew! I told ya...it's a bugger to get running, but then once you do
eveything becomes pretty transparent.

Uh... I don't see anything about yellow flags, or Euro style or chat
functions in the track setup menu.

Realism choices are expert and normal, no hardcore.

Is there a difference between car types? Does a Mercedes
drive differently than an Alpha?
It looks like "Opel" means BMW. Right? I cycled through
cars during a replay, and found a BMW. It is Chuck Hleinhagen's
car. When I looked at the info it was identified as an "Opel".
We don't have Opels in the U.S., so I went to the Opel web site,
and Chuck's car doesn't look like anything they sell.

Ok, I brought in a new driver file from the TPTCC site, so
there are no default pictures of Mercedes. I saw them last
night before I brought in the new file. All the cars I raced
last night at Indy were Mercedes.
Got it, thanks. Because I wanted a BMW, I cloned chuck.
He was 918, so I grabbed 818. And I copied his 916.tex file
to 818.tex. This seems to work.
How do I paint this thing? When running standard NASCAR
Heat, I see the paint icon for easy use. But I don't see
that when starting DTM.
Yea, the rules section explains how to register.
I think I'll get my car painted and do some laps at
Road Atlanta, which I've never driven, before proceeding
further with getting on line.
I hope there is a class for inexperienced drivers who
won't get too bent if someone punts them off the road.

to worry about the yellows. The Euro style was a reference to NOT throwing
yellows when somebody wrecks. There is no menu item for that. American
races tend to throw yellow flags whenever there is a wreck or spin, Euro
style racing 'usually' means they won't throw a yellow flag unless the track
is blocked or filled with wrecked car parts.
Chat is in the car during the race.. type the letter t then type whatever
message you want...hit enter and the other racers will see it. However,
typing while racing isn't the easiest thing to do. There are some voice
programs like Game Commander 2 that work with Heat.

your file probably says...
hardcore_enabled no
change the no to yes and then you can choose hardcore mode in setup.
Nascar Heat has the same file in the main Heat folder. You can also change
the settings there for Nascar. If you have other mods, they too will have
their own options.cfg file....and you chould/should enable hardcore in all
of them.

original, then the Alfa and finally the opel. In the main dtm folder, you
will see files for each. merc.car opel.car & alfa.car. some of the tptcc
users have taken one of these cars, and dropped a BMW paintjob on it. If
you look closely at the BMW's you can see the body shape of whatever car
file it was based on.
The Mercedes is a rear wheel drive car...I think it 'may' be the fastest,
but it is also the hardest to recover in a slide/spin situation.
The Opel and Alfa's are all wheel drive and can be easier to drive. The
alfa has the shorter wheel base of the AWD cars and may be slightly easier
to turn.

England the Opels have a brand name of Vauxhaul and in Austrailia they are
called Holden. (Caddy is going to build the Holden Commodore next year in
the USA) As stated above, the BMW is a fake car with an opel chassis and a
BMW paintjob.

Most painters are using Paintshop pro. I can't paint my house so I get
somebody to paint for me...check out the #37 & #38 Alfa's. Those
multi-colored wonders are from my team mate. DJ Thibodeau. Great work.
DTM is a very alive mod...it's easy to get outta shape and run off the
track. Be gentle getting back on the racing line...don't make a lunge to
the middle of the track and you should give the guys still racing a clear
path by.
Have fun!!

They differ only by the Opel and Alfa having AWD
(75/25 r/f torque split) as they did in '95 and by wheelbase; the Merc's the longest, the Alfa the shortest. For ease of
integrating the mod into the game, they still have a lot of Cup car in them.
Version 2, on the other hand.... ;-)

Last night, before I got your last post I went to Road
Atlanta. I've never seen it. After 3 practice laps I
owned the track. Now I've enabled hardcore, I think I'll
practice for a week or so before I go on-line.

I'm going through a lot of money right now, and I'd rather
not spend $100.00 just to paint my car. Is there a way to use
the car painter in NASCAR Heat?
I'm not familiar with graphics files. Are the ".txt" files
some standard format, if so, which format is it? Gimp, which
is supposed to be a photoshop clone, and has served me well
for my limited needs, gagged when I tried to open my car's
".txt" file, as did Microsoft Paint. Can I convert the cars
into a graphic format that Gimp can understand? Is there a
free paint program that will work?
I think people did a great job on the tracks. But there
are some things I'd like to see done to my home town track,
Portland. Is there some way I could be involved in tweaking
this? I'd like to see some camber in the road and it would be
nice to look at Mt Hood when driving down the back straight.
I can take a camera out to the track and walk it. I've never
done a track before, so I don't know if this is doable.
Imola, on the other hand, seems odd. I'm not criticizing
whoever made it available. But I like that track, pre and
post the Senna tragedy, and I would love to see it be one
version of the track or the other. The absence of the chicane
at Tamburello, Variante Alta and Variante Marlboro Variante
suggests that it could use work.
I believe some people have created tracks for SCGT. Are
these efforts available, at least as starting points, for
conversion to NASCAR Heat?
Thanks
Larry
Portland is as it is...a conversion from CPR. I don't know if anybody out
there has the time and code knowledge to add to it. I will say...for a real
event, scrap along the outside wall at the last turn. You'll find PIR's
black hole.
I can't help ya with painting...I know red, green, and blue but that is
already pushing my skills/knowledge.
Imola is the Motorcycle circuit that is used by GP bikes. It's fairly up
to date...say 1999 or 2000 but it does differ from the Grand Prix F1
circuit.
There are some folks converting SCGT tracks, but I assume it is a
painfully slow process. We take what we can get.
And it's NOT Mt Hood, but if you look VERY VERY carefully at Sears, off to
the left of the first hill, you'll see the very tippy top of a
mountain...I'd guess Mt Shasta but that should be much farther north.
