Is there going to be a second annual Boxing Day Grand Prix? I really enjoyed
the full length races you put on last winter.
Don McCorkle
Planning EldredP's holiday full-length GPL races
Don McCorkle asked whether EldredP would again host a full-length Boxing Day Grand Prix. Eldred agreed to run races at Spa and on New Year's Day, and participants discussed start times across time zones. The thread drifted into jokes about Holland versus the Netherlands, why the Dutch are called Dutch, and 'going Dutch'.

We still haven't run Spa yet - maybe that on on the 26th, and re-do Rouen on
Jan 1st? I need to look through the available tracks list... :-)

If at all possible, could the race be scheduled for late afternoon/early
evening CET? I have to go to my inlaws for a traditional Christmas
lunch. Please note, DGF, we do Christmas lunches all of December in
Denmark. Actually, we even start in November and end in January.

That's because Germany isn't called Germany in German. It's Deutschland -
land of the Deutsch. The Brits considered us Hollanders to be some sort of
Deutschers too, living in the same region (from their point of view) and
speaking the same kind of language. Deutsch - Dutch... it's just an
historical mistake. It even dates from times when neither the Netherlands
nor Germany existed as countries.

Maybe you can explain this other great Dutch conundrum for me too. Why do
people say "going dutch" when they go on a date and each pays their own way?
To me it implies that the Dutch are cheap, but I have never seen evidence of
that. You probably don't know the answer to that because they don't say it
there, but over here people occasionally say it.

That would be Jim Jarmusch's "Night on Earth", and the Italian was Roberto
Benini. There were five segments, with one in L.A. (Winona Ryder). Good
film, although obviously much more about the characters than the actual
story. Mix in some Tom Waits music (and the perpetually-depressed Finn, as
you said) and you have a very odd but interesting film

Actually, an uncle of mine is currently on his deathbed, so what I meant was
I will have to work on Boxing day unless I have to attend his funeral.
