Greger Huttu's new Nürburgring GPL record and link etiquette

A post linked directly to a replay of Greger Huttu's new GPL Nürburgring record of 7:44.75. Larry objected to an unexplained direct download link as a security risk, and others argued that a zip file is harmless if scanned, leading to some sniping.

Um, excuse me, but you embed a link in a newsgroup, that says "WOW! Check This:" That starts a download right away (deep linked) instead of displaying a web page? Are you NUTS :) Could be innocent, but no one in their right mind is going to continue with the download. Not under these circumstances :) -Larry "Jeffrey3456" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:a0fqkd$kqo50$[email hidden]... > WOW! check this: > http://www.btinternet.com/~keith.osborn/GHNurburg74475LotusFF.zip > >
True enough, but it is a ZIP file. If it were a document or an EXE I could see being alarmed, but you do scan your ZIPs for viri before opening them, correct? That alarmest of an attitude is what these virus-maker-cyberterrorists want to happen, everyone to be scared to death to actually USE the internet. I ain't giving in... Just so you know, it checked out with no problems. Now just to get home to GPL so I can watch it, hehe. Larry (The Other Larry) <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:GVKW7.70069$[email hidden]...

You're right of course, Larry, but a look at the link would show it's a zip file containing a new WR at the Ring (7:44.75 - sheesh!) Congrats to Greger; what a nice present for Barty. I'm sure he'll enjoy it. Best served cold, eh? ;-) SB (tucking tail & whimpering away) "Larry (The Other Larry)" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:GVKW7.70069$[email hidden]...

Yes, I scan my stuff thank you. And it's not being alarmist hesitating to download a deep-linked file from a posting in a newsgroup that says simply "WOW! I saw the Zip file. I know what it says it was. My point is the post chose the worse possible way to get people to download the file. Or, maybe not. Maybe we HAVEN'T learned anything. Haven't learned what? Last time I checked, opening a zip file couldn't do any damage to Windows. If it could, then just download/unzip the file in a real operating system first to check its integrity. Mine just displayed it as a hyperlink, and waited for me to do something about it (my first response was to expand the thread and read the first few responses ;-) I might go and download it later, but then again since I was stuck around 8:25 last time I tried, I might not! Yes, it popped up a download dialog immediately.
