Full-distance GPL Nurburgring Grand Prix won by Tim Frazer

EldredP posted results of a full-length online Grand Prix Legends race at the Nurburgring, won by Tim Frazer. Participants described the difficulty of concentrating over many laps, including Andre Warringa crashing out from a big lead. They discussed passwording future full-GP races to keep out drivers who join without intending to finish.

Eldred, I responded to Andre's post awhile back about passwording this race and I'm glad you didn't. Although I wanted very much to be part of this race, my efforts in practice made it clear to me that I do not belong on this track when it does not have "shift R" available.(As a courtesy to others!) I still want more than anything to do one of your GP's, so I hope you will continue to keep them on a first come basis. Thanks, Gary Stephenson EldredP wrote:

When/if I ever host Monaco, that will be passworded. I also have concerns about people who join, but don't realize it's a GP race. We had a guy yesterday who called us "nuts" for running a full race. He seemed surprised that anyone would even TRY it. That had at least a couple of us nervous about his ability. I had "!eject #15" all typed in and ready to execute, but he said he'd try...<g> He crashed out on lap 2, so maybe I should have kicked him as soon as he made the comment... I > was a bit worried about that when you both went out... I > thought you might comiserate with each other...<g> I assume it's common knowledge it's possible to chat on a 1-on-1 basis in GPL? Similar to the "whisper" function in VROC if one preceeds his comment by "/#xx", without the quotes and where xx is car number of the person the message is intended for (no leading zeros for single digit numbers), the message can only be seen by the driver of that particular car. Obviously, one should double check the person in question has indeed retired. The car number can be found on the entry list page (click dog ear at Event Info screen). A received "whispered" comment will be preceded by "->" in the chat window. When Andre lost it I informed as to what went wrong as he was not in my replay at the time. As he answered "in the clear" (by mistake I assume), I didn't initiate chat again before the end of the race. Personally I find chat during live sessions most distracting so, as a rule, I try to not subject others to it either. In case anyone's interested/cares I messed this one up royally as well and am still kicking myself for rushing my recovery, overrevving my engine in the process (which lead to my eventual demise). Apologies to my fellow racers for making Adenauer Forst a bit more of a chicane than it already is on lap1. My replay doesn't reach, but I think/hope things just about went ok and I didn't really involve anyone in my off(s). If not, feel free to send E-mail and yell at me. ;-) Jan. =--- "Pay attention when I'm talking to you boy!" -Foghorn Leghorn.

Hmm.. another person also crashed after 2 laps. I talked to him afterwards what happened, and he said he crashed his car on purpose because he didn't intend to drive more than 2 laps. I still think we should password the races to make sure only serious people join. Andre

He -said- he crashed on purpose, but I seriously doubt that to be honest :) Anyway, the point I tried to make was that again spots were filled by people who did not intend to finish the race. Andre

Eh, I crashed after 2 laps, but I did not talk to Andre after the race. Felt really bad about it after Eldred moved the race on my request. (Thanks, Eldred) Stupid mistake as usual. -- -asbjxrn

Crashed out on purpose? That sounds pretty dumb to me... I'm curious to know who that was. If you want to let me know who that was in private e-mail, that's fine. Six drivers dropped out(or crashed out) after 1 lap. Out of those, the only name I didn't know was Rolf Marggi(the others I know through leagues or previous GP races). Coincidentally(or not) he was the one who called us "nuts"... I was halfway glad when he exited. Maybe that's a bad attitude, but I thought the race would be 'safer' afterwards... As far as passwording, I'm split on this: a smaller group of drivers, increasing the chances of driving around by yourself, or a full field - with the risk of a yahoo joining... Yes, thanks guys. Now I realize that many people stayed there after retiring and watched the race and I feel really ashamed of my driving. I can only imagine what were private comments when I spun 3 times in a row in Metzgesfeld and started to take it at a speed of pedestrian afterward. My race was kind of typical for me. I damaged engine (or it got problem itself) and bent suspension during first 2 or 3 laps and spent the rest of the race overcoming problems I created myself. Congratulations to Tim for winning and my sincere thanks to Steve Brunt for bringing back my concentration by passing me and creating some tension in the closing stages of the race:) Alex.

Was that YOU who called us nuts? Nah, I don't think so... I was referring to Rolf... *You*, I trust. *Him*, I didn't. Same here Mark :) I had almost a year of absence with a short come back some 3 months ago. I fixed the lap times by now, improved my pb a bit, but the consistancy is still way off, especially on the Ring. I (in Ferrari) had a great start off gridspot 2, passing Jure completely in the clear before T1 (he was in Honda, which to me seems to be glued to the starting grid :)). After T1 my heart was starting to go crazy, with me thinking "oooooh shite" :)))))) But when Jure fell back tiny bit by tiny bit, my heart settled down again :) and the concentration really kicked in right away. I kept it at a 'somewhat safe' pace, but after Jure went out my lead was suddenly over 30 secs, and my concentration started to drop. That, combined with my consistancy not being what it was yet, made me starting to make little mistakes. I tried to regain my concentration, but that didn't work too well, and my last mistake, in lap 7, was a bit bigger :) -- René van Lobberegt, The Netherlands.
