TSW2 wheel jitter on SB Live gameport and fixes

An owner of a TSW2 modified wheel reported severe jitter that Thomas Super Wheels said was on his end, even after replacement pots. Others said the SB Live gameport was a known problem and recommended a PDPI card or the Sim-Addicts USB converter, while many owners praised the wheel and TSW support. A side discussion covered getting split-axis pedals working in F1 2001 by holding the brake during startup or using DXTweak.

Hi all maybe someone can help me .i bought a thomas wheel a while back and i can't make it stop jittering no matter what i try.a search on google shows im not the only one that this has happened to. i called dave thomas and he said that it was on my end so i hooked it up to my other box still the same thing well he sent me some new pots to try that was no help now im finding out that i need a lpdi card to stop this but i have no isa slot so that want help me neither .now i would like to know why in the world did'nt he tell me that to start with(sure would have saved me a lot of trouble)so now im stuck with a $400 dollar wheel that want calibrate with out jumping all over the place.in gpl you can see the wheel twitching an also in all other sims i have .my lwff dose not do this and is as smooth as the day i got it two years ago and if it ever dies i will be screwed because they don't make them with the steel cable any more. i went with the thomas wheel because it was going to be easy to upgrade later on but if i can't make it stop doing the jitter bug it is of no use to me at all.i would not recommend that any one buy this wheel at all becase of this problem. they should tell you that you need a extra card to make there wheel work right. but instead they blame it on the end user. here are my specs p4 1.3 sb live digtial geforce gts 32mb win me
The first place I start is to make sure that "Poll with Interrupts" on the Game Controllers/Controller ID Assignment page is turned OFF. Next, the SB Live generally has a very stable gameport, and the 50K Spectrol pots used by TSW are of the highest quality... Just to discount a dodgy gameport, maybe borrow a friends sound card and try it. The other option is to use the Rockfire USB converter you can buy from TSW, but you'd haver to upgrade your pots to 100K... The other option is to take a look at this Gameport to USB Converter :- http://www.sim-addicts.com/products.htm The cut-down Analog only controller is costly at US$99, but it claims to solve jitter issues. <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I just ordered new potentiometers from TE yesterday that are supposed to work better with the USB converter - better than the DK pots. I also ordered my USB converter directly from them since I know it will work. man i uninstalled that game the tire model was all screwed up after the patch.plus there were alot of bugs. there was to much grip in places that should'nt be there and not enough grip in others.but the ff was great.i just felt like it was another arcade game from ea and not really a sim and i had a llot of trouble with the controllers. the axis gas and brake in split axis would'nt work right i could get them asigned but it only worked at half way so it made it hard to judge the car with all aids off. thanks alot don On Sat, 05 Jan 2002 18:51:47 GMT, "Richard \"ZZ\" Busch" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Most can, true. Some can't. Nelson's comment was that this was the first time he'd heard of anyone having a problem. I'm not sure if he's including calibration issues in that or not - he might not have been looking for those.... That's the same setup as me. When you slect a track, you have to hold down the brake pedal. Hols it from the time you select "drive" until you're moving down pit lane. It should work then. I have an old TSW (1996) that I added the clutch pedal to a few years back. It has the axes as follows: gas Joy1 Z- brake Joy1 RZ+ clutch Joy1 Y+ steering Joy1 X+/X- If I hold down the brake pedal while I'm firing up F1-2001, then this arrangement works just fine. Same thing works properly in SCGT, GPL, GP3, N4, DTR, Leadfoot, Viper, etc. Wayne Hutchison "Richard "ZZ" Busch" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:7XHZ7.16679$[email hidden]...

Yes - I have one. I also have the Rockfire USB, and the Sim-Addicts solution works like a dream. No jitter, maintains a high resolution. Ok, good. Glad I could help(if in fact I did<g>). Although I find it hard to believe that they didn't discover this problem in beta testing. Or maybe they did, but just didn't care - it happens in F12000, F1200CS, SBK2001, and now F12001... :( Eldred -- Dale Earnhardt, Sr. R.I.P. 1951-2001 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPLRank - under construction... Don, I also have this huge jitter issue with my 1997 TSW2 and always have with my SB Live! Gamer 5.1. I was lucky enough to get a PDPI and still use it with my current rig. Using it in the SB Live! Gamer port made it unplayable. It's one of the reasons I haven't upgraded my system since ISA is becoming a dinosaur. Well if TSW wont stand behind their products and accept a return, I would say we should not support this product and buy another comparible wheel that does not have design problem and has better customer support "96ImpalaSS" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:oJ_Z7.55493$[email hidden]...

Hmm, what kind of jitter are you on about? The seemingly random up/down jumping when you calibrate the wheel under windows? Have you tried the "generic" input driver that GPL offers? the split axis issues are due to shoddy programming on the game developers side, not an inherent problem of the TSW. uwe -- Uwe Schuerkamp //////////////////////////// http://www.schuerkamp.de/ Herford, Germany \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ (52.0N/8.5E) Ever wondered what's wrong with the world? http://bnetwork.com/ PGP Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61

It's comparable to the PDPI in many respects. It requires no drivers and comes with no software (uses standard Microsoft HID drivers), and works under Win9x/2k/XP. The card is standalone and sits externally from the PC. It's really designed to be mounted inside your wheel or a housing that sits between your wheel and the PC. It has a 15pin gameport connector so the TSW will plug into it directly and a USB connection to the PC end. To order, just email them. Mine works fine, and I don't have any ISA slots on my system. I use a PCI Sound Blaster Live X-Gamer 5.1 I recommend the wheel to anyone who is in the market for a nice piece of hardware. I've had mine since 1996 and it's still as smooth as the day I got it.. (Replaced the pots a few times through the years) With the TSW warranty system, and great customer service, I'd imagine if the wheel is still new, you could send it back and get your money back.. Hope you get it to work on your system, cause your missing out on a great wheel otherwise! After all, I have the exact same wheel, and it works just fine with my PDPI. Would you also boycott Creative Labs? The problem only manifests itself with THEIR card... well i can't really say if the wheel is good nor bad. it is unusable at the moment it takes big jump to the right left seems to be ok and if you turn right it goes all at once new pots want fix it.when dave sent me the pots he said it was probably on my end .well i put in the pots still the same thing ,they knew about this but didn't tell me i have tried everything but couldn't get it to stop.now i have to spend another $100.00 buck's just to get there wheel to work right .i have not had this problem with the other two wheel's i have.both are logitech's one is non ff one is ff neither one jumps at all on the same sb live card that i hooked the tsw to.for the money i have already put in to this wheel i think it should have worked right out of the box like all the other's no hidden cost's or fee's just plug it in and it works.but the game card will fix it so all is not lost. ps.when i found out that they knew this. and also that alot of others have this same problem well that 's what got my goat.it's not the wheel exactly it's the pots they use i guess.now i gottta tell my wife i have to sink more money in to my gameing box hehehe

Not trying to be a smartass but your posts are enough to give someone a headache trying to read the run-ons without anything near proper punctuation and capitalization. TSW2 Modified on a SoundBlaster Live Value and have never had a problem here. Not saying your problem doesn't exist, but I haven't witnessed it on my end. I hope you find a solution as the TSW wheel is excellent. Scott PA-Scott <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Why can't you just send it back and get a refund? I'm not sure what pots they use now a days, but I get mine from Digikey (# RV4NJ104C-ND) They're 100K 2W Carbon and cost about 5 bucks each.. They are great pots IMO.. That's all there is to an analog wheel/pedal system.. The hardware just turns the pots.. The problem you describe sounds exactly like a bad pot.. The veering while racing, along with the twitching while calibrating. So I can understand why they wouldn't suggest that you needed to buy a new card.. But since your having a problem with it, you should just send it back and get a refund.

Eldred, Same here.. I have absolutely no problems with the TSW on my SB Live.. And neither do thousands of other people.. I've suggested that the guy just send it back for a refund.. I've never heard a bad word mentioned about TSW before this thread, so I would imagine they have a decent return policy.. I know they have a lifetime warranty on the units themselves.. EldredP wrote:

I just saw where you said this happens on two separate PC's?? I'm wondering, are you *positive* that it's not just a bad pot?? Have them send you some new pots, before you spend any money on upgrading the game card! Good Luck!
Actually, I used it on a Live for several years, and am now using it on an Audigy with just as good success. Don Burnette "Mick" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Eldred, No, haven't tried F2001 so I can't say. But I've never had a problem in any other sim, well... Split axis wouldn't work during beta testing of Motor City Online, but other than that no problems at all. Didn't Tom Pabst post something about the loading of "something" in Win98SE that can lead to problems with Live cards and the gameport? Sorry I can't be specific but I truly forget what it was. I'm pretty sure I read that in one of his "tips" posts before. Scott PA-Scott "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

It seems to be a combination of things that occurs just often enough that I've heard of 3 or 4 people with problems. It's probably such a small percentage of sales that they don't worry about it? I can't get mine to work with MTBR in split-axis mode - has anyone else gotten it to work? If so, how did you configure it? It worked just FINE with the demo, but not in the retail game. Grrr... No, I don't have the split axis setup yet. Don Burnette

Depends on your game port. Mine works in split-axis in F1 2001, with a PDPI. We gotta get yours working... I'm sure it can be done. If F1-2001 is similar in joystick setup to F1-2000, it can be done. I got my TSW(mod) with split axis working in F1-2000 through fiddling with DXTweak.exe to get the accel/brake axis set up to the games liking and holding one/both pedals down while the game started so the game could actually see both axis. -Dirt-

It's plugged into a PDIP-L4 game card. If I recall correctly, the TSW uses only half the pot's axis. Say, 50-100 of a full range of 1-100. I had to manually adjust the start increment on the axis to 50 using DXTweak.exe because F1-2000 saw the full 1-100 range, not the calibrated 50-100 range. I believe I did that on both the accelerator axis and the brake axis. If you don't use DXTweak.exe than the game won't register any input until you hit the 50 mark, which would be half way through the range of motion and make the pedal an on-off switch. To get F1-2000 to see the separate brake axis I had to hold the brake (and possibly the accelerator) down BEFORE I started the game and through the startup until the game was fully stared. Can't remember if I had to hold them until I got to the calib. screen, though. -Dirt-
