Ashley McConnell's Sirocco Racing graphics demo testing

Hobbyist developer Ashley McConnell asked the group to test an early Direct3D graphics demo for his planned sim. Many posted their hardware and results; most systems worked, but some GeForce2 and Voodoo setups failed to find a 16-bit mode or showed untextured cars because of a large 1024x1024 texture. He later posted an optimised build that ran much faster.

Hi Folks, As some of you know I am trying to trying to develop a realistic racing sim. I have been experimenting with direct 3d in the past few weeks and have managed to fling something together. Please dont laugh - it is rather primitive ;). I got a friend to test it, but it wouldnt work on his machine for some reason (although it works on 5 other PCs I have tested it on). I just want to make sure that it isnt a fault in my code. The physics work that I have done hasnt been added to the demo, this is really just to check that the gfx part is working before I go any deeper . The one good thing in it is the LMP car model that was made by Chris Doughty (aka) CD_quiksilver :) I will be updating my site as regularly as possible (without it becoming a full-time job :)). I will update the front page to give a little more information tonight, but until then : - http://www.siroccoracing.com/demo/ ***It needs DIRECTX 8**** Please read the instructions.txt as the "controls" aren't exactly user friendly :) Thanks for listening to my ramblings :) All the best, Ash

Works fine on my system, 1.4Ghz Win2k and nVidia Gf3 Ti500 Dx8.1. Looking at the textures, some older cards are going to have a problem with that 1024x1024 32bit texture.
Thanks Doug, Your system should be great, cant understand why it wouldnt work. I'll have a look at the dhEngine code when I get home. I am using XP + GF2 to develop. Thanks again for the feedback Ash http://www.siroccoracing.com Douglas Ellison wrote:

Ah, that might be a problem, thanks for pointing it out Carol All the best, Ash Carol Bekker wrote: > Works fine on my system, 1.4Ghz Win2k and nVidia Gf3 Ti500 Dx8.1. Looking at > the textures, some older cards are going to have a problem with that > 1024x1024 32bit texture. > > >
Works on my system... thought I'd check it out and let you know how a V5 handles it. Don't want you just looking after the nVidia crowd. ;) System specs.: 1.33GHz T'bird, V5 5500, Win98SE, DirectX 8.0a. Regards, Robin
If it's supposed to look like car model floating above a gray plane against a black background and some yellow numbers in the top left corner, it works. Yes Jan, I am afraid thats it for the minute :) Thanks for letting me know! I thought 1024 textures wouldnt work on voodoo 3's? On my home machine it works fine. AMD duron 650 Abit KT7 Mobo with via 133 and Voodoo 5 5500. But on my work laptop I get no textures on the car, only white. Compaq M700, Intel PIII 700, ATI Rage Mobility graphix card. Nut then the laptop market is a niche you don't have to consider :-) cheers
Ahh that must be that large texture size. I am surprised it works on my work machine with a cheapy integrated intel card, I would have thought if it worked on this it would work on anything, Thanks for the into Thomas All the best, Ash Thomas Soerensen wrote:

Well, it works . . . not to say that it works well at all, but it...runs. in Full Screen mode, I get no textures--just a white car. In windowed mode, I get software graphics (apparently). PII400mhz, 64MB RAM, Voodoo2 card :sigh: I didn't expect it to run well, so don't feel bad. :) ----------------------------------------- Dan Belcher Webmaster, http://www.gplworld.racesim.net/simcrash
