What makes GPL so good?

Newcomer asks what makes Grand Prix Legends so good

A newcomer asked what makes GPL special, and after some teasing regulars gave answers. They cited physics that respond to real driving technique, soft-chassis 1967 cars that suit PC limitations, strong online play, atmosphere and the fear factor. A few preferred other sims, and the thread had plenty of joking replies.

IMHO what makes it so good is I can read the book "Going Faster" by Skip Barber racing school, then try alot of the things mentioned in this book and they actually work in GPL... and my lap times get better and better since I started reading this book. Which to me proves that GPL is very close if not dead on to accuratly simulating real world physics,, perfect ? Nope,, but bloody close. GPL is arguably the best "overall" race sim out there at the moment. There might be others that have say, better physics but suck at online play, or better graphics but only 16-18 tracks etc.. Plus with the '67 era cars setup is, if not easy to get right, is at least easier to understand then modern race cars with wings, ride height, traction control etc.. As for the "arguably" part, wait for the flames.... Art. "Gutty" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I think it is an important factor that the cars simulated by GPL have very soft chassis compared to modern cars. This makes everything in the dynamics happen a lot slower which reduces the problems with the limitations in a PC simulation (low frame rate, low resolution, high control delay etc). In other words, a good model of an easy target makes an excellent simulation. Modern F1 (and even modern sports car) simulations have a much harder problem to solve. It might even be impossible to achieve the fidelity of GPL with a modern F1 simulation on todays PCs. _ Mats Lofkvist [email hidden]

Actually, I suck big time at GPL (haven't put the hours in), and I much prefer Viper Racing or Grand Prix 3, the only advantage that GPL has is the fact you don't need the CD to play. It's also bloody time consuming. For me, fun is driving on real racetracks in real life. GPL is for me the game that comes closest to satisfy the need when I can't do it for real (in the winter time mainly) And I do wonder if it might not be so that GPL has the highest percentage of people also racing for real - from low end hobby club track days to whateever. Perhaps there is a greater appreciation of the game if one were alive and followed those cars/drivers during that era? Having met Dan Gurney briefly a couple times, I'm still struck by a person that tall fitting in one of those little crates let alone being so successful in them. GPL isn't easy, just as the real-life driving of the day wasn't. -- Chris H. Still a good memory, Rob, even though Larry Robinson's coaching talents weren't recognized in either Los Angeles or New Jersey. -- Chris H. >capture the flag? Nah, has to be last man standing, preferred map: turn 1 at Monza or Silverstone ;) Honestly: I think, one can drive this sim for years and is still improving. (And it has everything you need: sufficient graphics, not too bad AI, best online play so far, nice force feedback, ...) And then it is the game that features the most tracks, There is almost no place on earth uncovered -> BIG THX to all the track creators! Calis
"Gutty" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Hey All, > > I'm new to this newsgroup and GPL, what makes it so good? > > Thanks > Atmosphere: the combination of colour palette, updated graphics, sound and the brilliant new cockpits really put you in the seat, I think. "Oh shit" moments: one develops a real sense of fear with this game. Beads of sweat will form on your brow any time you are faced with a 5th gear corner or chicane. Maybe it's because things happen a little more slowly when it all goes wrong. You have a moment or two to contemplate your fate before you finally hit. Wheel to wheel racing: The slidy, softly-sprung cars really let you go side by side through several corners. The ability to look left and right (if you are dexterous) lets you keep tabs on your opponent and race cleanly. Constant improvement: You will always get better with more practice. Beautiful car models: Now that there are cars like the GPLEA Eagle, your jaw will drop each time you watch a replay. Nice force feedback: You know what the front tires and back tires are doing. Crazy racetracks: 1960s F1 drivers had cajones. Big ones. I still shake my head (and grin like an idiot) as I fling myself around some of these tracks. And that's just the joys of off-line racing... Stephen p.s. most of the same applies to F1-2001, which is getting a lot of my precious spare time now. The cars are of course much different in their reactions, but you can "play" with the car the same way you can in GPL (and in ways you can't with GP3, my former favourite) and really fell the front-end grip.
