Re: R.A.S.ers' Professions?

Group members share their professions

Members of the newsgroup listed their jobs, which ranged from software engineers and IT staff to a photographer, mechanics, a bookie, a postal worker, pilots and engineers at automotive suppliers. One poster said he handled marketing for NASCAR Busch North teams, and another claimed a truck racing game used telemetry from his real truck. The thread was friendly, with jokes about geeks and unions.

Many people 'out there' would think those who enjoy driving cars in a simulated world could be described as geeks, nay nerds. It could therefore also be assumed that we would also have nerdy, computery jobs. Of course this is not the case. For example, I'm a 'Business Analyst' (whatever that is), although <sniff> I'm soon to be made redundant, and am considering a slight career change. Still I.T though. Hang on....? What about you guys? Jonesy Remove 'ANTISPAM' when replying. "Movement is Tranquillity" - Stirling Moss GPLRank (F1): 15.73 Monster handicap: 559.63
I always find it interesting to learn about peoples backgrounds that I race and chat with online , etc. =) Me, I have Bachelors degrees in Economics and Finance, and I'm close to finishing my MBA. However, I am the Marketing & Technology Manager (This is probably as 'non-describing' as your title as I also act as Fraud & Compliance Officer <G>) for a $85 million asset size Credit Union. I got interested in computers/technology back in 92 when I was put in charge of a computer lab on campus as a work/study while in college. Back when Mosaic was the all text browser, and telnet, gopher, IRC and Mudding on the lab's Sun Sparc stations ruled my evenings. ;) Scott PA-Scott http://www.Husted.cc "Jonesy" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Y9E_7.1649$[email hidden]... > Many people 'out there' would think those who enjoy driving cars in a > simulated world could be described as geeks, nay nerds. **This is not to be taken personally - i know you didnt say it** I completely resent the "nerdy image" that is labelled to "computery jobs". I mean is an accountant or a train conductor or a gardener any more "boring" than a nerdy / geeky computer person? Its hardly the job that makes someone a "nerd" I think its mostly jealousy tho, because on the whole people in IT jobs get a fairly good wage and are fairly interested in their job. grrr, it just riles me up :) I am sorry to hear you might become redundant tho :( bad stuff To answer the question - I am a software engineer (i.e. programmer) All the best, Ash http://www.siroccoracing.com - Writing your own sim - the ultimate nerd thing :) Jonesy wrote: > Many people 'out there' would think those who enjoy driving cars in a > simulated world could be described as geeks, nay nerds. Transport Research. Up until now I have mostly been developing strategic transport models with some obscure software (2500 users worldwide), but this year I will also make 3D scenarios for our full-scale car and truck sim with 3D studio and Multigen. I'm not complaining :) So I guess my job is computery, although apart from one mandatory Turbo Pascal course at the university, I have no IT education. -- Olav K. Malmin remove .spam when replying

Hey! Welcome to unemployment! Me? I was made redundant a few months ago. I worked for Excite@Home in the network ops center after starting out as a lowly call center tech nearly two years ago. The IT Field sucks around here (i'm in the bay area...close enough to Silicon Valley to smell the burning leftovers of the IT boom), so i've just been kicking back and taking my time figuring out where to go next. I don't consider myself a nerd but could stand to be corrected. I do my own thing running a fledgling marketing/PR business supporting race teams that run in the NASCAR Busch North Series. Currently I represent five full-time teams and a part-timer, as well as doing one-shot press releases and autograph card layout for other teams. I've been doing it half-assed for a couple years before digging in and deciding to make it my 'day job' after the company I was working for also considered me redundant. The fantastic home-based business, "Claff Promotions" (http://www.claff.net), served as primary sponsor for my NASCAR 4 online racing exploits last year and that advertising resulted in a fantastic addition of zero new clients. But hope springs eternal and it will be back to support my efforts in the 2002 season. -- Claff Parsimonious Racing #93 Claff Promotions Chevrolet (NEORA, IWCC, LRL) Parsimonious Racing #0 Claff Promotions Chevrolet (HAL) http://www.claff.net http://www.claff.net/racing

Network Admin. and for all those guys that work for race teams, I'm available to drive. Will drive for free. One day I'll get my race team off the ground. (last year I ran AutoX's and drag racing in the new 'bird, and am rebuilding the old 'bird for the road course.) I love driving Sim Cars almost as much as driving real cars. I'm actually not a geek - kind of a Redneck/Geek cross. My garage is full of dead cars, and my basement full of dead computers. "Jonesy" <[email hidden]> writes: > Andre, > > Any hints for a wannabe programmer? What language to start with? What is > 'in vogue' at the moment? I'm not Andre, but what you should start with is not what is in vouge, but what will give you good habits/good understanding of programming principles. You should probably try to learn different languages as well, to get some understanding of different viewpoints of programming. (Lisp for the functional approach, C for the "assembler") Which language is the right one depends on what you are doing, and it pays off knowing strengths and weaknesses of the different languages. All IMO of course, and I'm not even a programmer. -- -asbjxrn

Yeah, but the only person the Union can bitch to is the management, and bitching about the management would be bitching about the workers and union too! Audio Engineer - I do concert sound and record albums. AASI Snowboard Instructor - I teach anyone who wants to how to ride a snowboard. I find sim racing expands the mind. It helps me prioritize, makes my real racing efforts become more instinctual because 'I've been there before'. Helps me with patience and interaction because I am racing in a league and, GPL excluded, is a nice way to relax. -- "Racing! - Science for the action minded." mark "Jonesy" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Y9E_7.1649$[email hidden]... > Many people 'out there' would think those who enjoy driving cars in a > simulated world could be described as geeks, nay nerds. Well, actually the game physics and parameters are made from the telemetry data of MY (the red one) truck from the 98 season...so the comparision would be pretty easy...it's the SAME, you get the same time from 0 to 160, you can enter the corners at the same speeds, it will start to skid at the same speed....goes on and on...
