> Thx much, Ian! Interesting review. Indeed. I am impressed by Rousseau's comments on both this review and the F12001 review. I particularly agreed with what he referred to as 'canned' spinouts in RT. I feel it's as if when you oversteer a little too much, the game calls up the 'automatic 180degree spin' routine...
He was a bit hasty with that. It's logical when you think how the famous steering bug works: Around the very center of steering travel there's a limited range of deadzone/understeer kind of response, and when the steering input crosses that range (especially at higher speeds), it snaps aggressively into heavy oversteer. That explains a _lot_ of things, including over-aggressive Abarth. It's fixed in the upcoming patch, though. Incidentally, it makes the hairy cars more forgiving now that there's actually a chance to respond more precisely to car's actions. There's absolutely no canned responses like 'if the driver does this, make the car flip' like in arcade games. -Ilari "Damien Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:a206sp$thm9i$[email hidden]... > > Thx much, Ian! I'm not sure of your reasoning here Ilari. The games been released for quite a while, and this steering problem is quite an issue. How can it be a bit hasty to mention a known problem that exists in the gold version of the game. Should a review consider possible future patches and judge/score accordingly with those in mind? I don't think so. If you are alluding to the famous DX deadzone problem being the primary cause of the steering issue, I don't agree... The main problem is the annoying input delay that occurs frequently and that's not deadzone related. You got me wrong :) RT has a specific steering bug, which affects car's handling not only in long tightening curves on tarmac (as mostly reported), but it also affects the slides as the player doesn't have full control of the traction at front. Review more or less suggested that there's a pre-done spin effect of sorts, when it was just a combination of the 2 bug: gas/brake pedal rate making it difficult to control gas precisely and the aforementioned steering bug. Both of those are confirmed fixed in the upcoming patch, yet that wasn't mentioned either.. It just created a wrong image in the reader's end, that's all. If I was a reviewer I'd mention things like developer recognizing issues and confirming fixes in the patch. These have been discussed for a long while on various forums. -Ilari "Ian Bell" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8DX08.25845$[email hidden]... > I'm not sure of your reasoning here Ilari. Don't want to start a tit for tat here mate but, I'll refer you to an excerpt from the review below: "A couple of other things to note. First is that there's a seriously annoying steering bug - in some stages you turn the wheel and nothing happens, and so you keep turning hoping for some response until, all of a sudden, it responds, by which time you've wound on too much lock and you're heading, unstoppably, for the scenery. In stage 3 of the Finish rally the bug is so bad it's totally undriveable. According to Bugbear, they're fixing it as I write this and will release a patch soon. (Let's hope they don't to a Ubi on us)." Now, that seems to mention the upcoming patch. :-) Cheers Ian www.simbin.com "Ilari Lehtinen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:a21m38$cc3$[email hidden]... > You got me wrong :) > > RT has a specific steering bug, which affects car's handling not only in > long tightening curves on tarmac (as mostly reported), but it also affects > the slides as the player doesn't have full control of the traction atfront. > Review more or less suggested that there's a pre-done spin effect ofsorts, > when it was just a combination of the 2 bug: gas/brake pedal rate makingit > difficult to control gas precisely and the aforementioned steering bug. Both > of those are confirmed fixed in the upcoming patch, yet that wasn't > mentioned either.. IMO, the real issue here is how on earth could a bug like this pass beta-testing??? It took me 3 minutes to discover that something was *very* wrong somewhere... -- ed_ "Life begins @ 7,000 rpm!"

I have an additional problem with RT. No brakes when going backwards. Is that a bug or something specific to my system ? Yes I know I'm not SUPPOSED to be going backwards, but when I do lose it and end up facing the wrong way it's nice to be able to stop ;) -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> "Ilari Lehtinen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:a21m38$cc3$[email hidden]... > You got me wrong :) > > RT has a specific steering bug, which affects car's handling not only in > long tightening curves on tarmac (as mostly reported), but it also affects > the slides as the player doesn't have full control of the traction at front. > Review more or less suggested that there's a pre-done spin effect of sorts, > when it was just a combination of the 2 bug: gas/brake pedal rate making it > difficult to control gas precisely and the aforementioned steering bug. "No" brakes or "really bad" brakes? as weight is transferred forward under braking the front brakes normally do most of the work, sixties rally cars likely still had drum rears so when they're the "leading" wheels they'll likely not be up to the task. No brakes at all, it stops when it hits something and not before ;) If the fronts were locking I could use the lack of grip to spin the car back round, but no, pressing the brake makes abslutely no difference when going backwards. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> "Art McEwen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:a26pve$tou$[email hidden]... > "No" brakes or "really bad" brakes? as weight is transferred forward under > braking the front brakes normally do most of the work, sixties rally cars > likely still had drum rears so when they're the "leading" wheels they'll > likely not be up to the task.
