Explaining the two Bathurst 1000 races and V8 Supercars

Euan Gilmour asked why there seemed to be two Bathurst 1000 races after watching the V8 race on Speedvision. Australians explained the TV-rights split between the V8 Supercar race and the Super Touring event, and the Holden versus Ford rivalry. Others shared memories of famous races, DVD collections, and the creator of the GPL Bathurst track noted how the circuit had changed.

Just saw the V8 Bathurst 1000 on SV excellent. First time I've seen Mt. Panorama after driving and loving it in GPL,SCGT and TOCA 3 (refuse to use the ludicrous Jarret&Labonte name they gave it over here) Any way I'm a bit confused (I know that's fairly easy to do) so if the Aussies out there could help me. Is there two Bathurst 1000? The AMP Super-Tourers and the V8? And if so which is a bigger deal and the historically pure one? I know there is the indigenous V8's and a Supertouring Championship, but which is bigger or more respected? And do they run at the same time head to head. And do the some drivers compete in both, or are there defections and acrimony like CART-IRL? And what's the prospect of ST now the rest of the world is sort of moving away from them?
> Is there two Bathurst 1000? The AMP Super-Tourers and the V8? And if so > which is a bigger deal and the historically pure one? Here's a rough answer - There used to be only 1 Bathurst which was on the 1st Weekend in October, but then a storm blew up over TV rights, Channel 10 had & still do have the rights to V8 Supercars, but channel 7 still had the rights to Bathurst. So then there were 2, fortunately the 2 litre super tourers died in the arse a few years ago and now there's only the V8 Supercars, which, was always the bigger and better format in terms of crowds & TV coverage
DOH - what time was it on SV ? I am an Aussie in the US and would love to see it. Hopefully they will repeat. Brad "Mobsy" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:sqJ08.72093$[email hidden]...

You bet! I was watching the same program on Speedvision yesterday... Those are kewl cars (montrous V8). They were really flying on the track. Is it just me or was the track really narrow at some points? I've seen other V8 (AVESCO?) races and some are even worse than Bathurst. Anyways, it looks like a cross between NASCAR stock cars and Motorola cup cars... Euan Gilmour wrote:

One thing to add though, the Super Tourer race is actually the official "Bathurst 1000" and the winner is the one who goes down in the history books as winning Bathurst. This is on paper only though, since the heart and soul of Australia lies with the V8 Supercars. Also, the STs are really pathetic now and virtually dead. BMW and Audi took off, it was never really popular though. They didn't even run a 1000km race last year, only 700 or so for some stupid reason. As far as international drivers go, quite a few make their way over for the V8 race, although I can't recall who was in the last one :o Pedro Lamy is supposed to be racing full time next year I believe. No, the STs didn't run at Bathurst at all last year (2001), you're thinking of the year before.

Most lovers of motorsport in Australia are caught up in the perenial battle of Holden (GMH) v's Ford. Generally if you've always been a Ford or Holden lover then thats the way it stays and whoever wins Bathurst has the bragging rights for a year. I've always favoured the big Ford V8's and my daughter the Holden Commodores (who unfortunately for me won this year) and it was her turn to give me a hard time about Holden's victory. EA are releasing shortly "V8 Challenge" (only in Australia I understand) which will be all about Holden v Ford. It will include the Bathurst track. I have even seen it said that there will be one box with a Commodore on it as the feature and another with a Ford. Just goes to show how the rivalry exists. Hope this helps. Well being hte person who did the Bathurst For GPL Release a little while ago now! The track that I did in GPL is not the same track that you see them driving on today, yes its the Same track, but its changed. the addition of the chase is one huge factor. the new pits, wider track and many more things.. If you are looking for a good detailed video collection I can only opint you in the same direction I found my info and that is to get "The Great Race" Volumes 1 thought to current. you'll find they go right back the the begining, Which was infact at Phillip Island in Victoria, and moving to Bathurst in 62 I think (getting late here). The race was run in class' and the feild actually started at different times for the first few years. the overall winner was not even considered at the time the class winner was the big deal back then. In the late 60's they introduced an outright winner being the team that completed the most laps and was able to complete a final lap. (that's why the big deal over Jim Richards win in 79(? not sure oif year). Who'll ever forget those imortal words "Your all a pack of @#$#ole's" in my mind he is the looser there as he has gone down in the history books as the sorest winner in history. IT was not long after this that they started get the the bigger and faster cars into the races to be the outright winner and a purse was being offered for the first one home. Here's a little know fact that a VW beatle was the first outright winner of Bathurst (don't remember the year) but he just beat a mini home they went at it for like 30 laps VW lead down the straight mini lead over the top. anyway I'm sure I've said enough to get holwed down so lets leave it at that! I'm not going to look up my facts most of it is video anyway. and it too late! I can only say that the V8's will always be the kings of the mountain. As far as witch is the official race yeah I think it has gone to the 2 litre jap crap... And there is an update coming for bathurst for those who are interested... I am not going to hold my breath on V8 Challenge being a wonderfull thing, nor am I going to stop from breathing over the thought of codemasters doing a V8 racer either. I for one hope and still have fath that The long awaited WSC will be the savour of our beloved sport, on the mountain. But Gee I don't know how long I can wait.. I might just have too go out fine an engine and do it myself! any idea's maybe somebody out there has just the right engine for me! heheh maybe the Q3 engine will do it? might be a computer killer though! That's completely different to how I remember it. Wasn't it 1992? when Richards was driving the turbo Skyline when a deluge of rain hit the mountain which caused roughly half the field to spin off. A number of cars had spun off coming up to conrod straight, including the leader at the time, Richards. The race was then called off, but Johnson had overtaken Richards after the spin and completed the lap, yet Richards was handed the win. The 'You're all a pack of arseholes' were to the crowd who, when Richards stood on the dias had been booed by the whole crowd and objects thrown at him. If anything, he was rather polite considering the circumstances! Apart from the fact it was Johnson (possibly the unluckiest man to ever race around Mt Panorama) who was robbed of the win, but the Skyline was creaming everything that year. It was also the last year of 'production' (sic) cars racing Bathurst and was and has been just V8's that have run (in what I consider the great race anyways, not those 2 litre rice machines they drive around there a few weeks before the V8's) Cheers, Rod.

Are you sure about that? Outright winner in 1963 was Harry Firth/Bob Jane in a Cortina GT. A VW won class A, but was 14 laps behind the outright winner. > anyway I'm sure I've said enough to get holwed down so lets leave it at > that! I always liked those Rice Machines...even the Euro ones..:) We didn't get any V8 coverage here in the states so the Super Tourers were our only exposure to Bathurst. I think we came in at the peak when British BTCC drivers were teaming with Aussie drivers. I still recognized many of the supertourer drivers running in this years V8 Bathurst. dave henrie "Rod Prince" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > In article <[email hidden]>, [email hidden] says... > > > and was able to complete a final lap. In article <ENH08.5287$[email hidden]>, egilmour@*NOSPAM*home.com says... > Is there two Bathurst 1000? The AMP Super-Tourers and the V8? There are two events with Super Tourers and V8 Supercars but only the V8 supercars race is consider the 'Great Race'. > which is a bigger deal and the historically pure one? Historically pure? Neither actually. However, the V8 supercars have been running around Mt Panorama since around 93? But the V8's attract a much larger crowd and viewing audience. I don't even bother to watch the Super Tourers. The historically pure Bathurst started 1963 and was 500 miles, only open to production cars. These were cars that essentially rolled off the assembly line and straight into the race, absolutely no modifications allowed in any way. There were also different classes which allowed competition between different price ranges of cars. Bathurst used to be a price/performance race for manufacturers to showcase their lates models. Around 67 was the beginning of the legacy that remains today of the Ford v Holden clash when Ford rolled out their GT and Holden rolled out their Monaro and raced them on the mountain. Shortly after was also the birth of Allan Moffat and Peter Brock in 69 which was possibly the most competitive period between two drivers in two different manufacturers cars. Early 70's we were hit with the Supercar scare where apparent public outrage stopped the car manufacturers from building bullets on wheels for the sole purpose of racing them at Bathurst. Problem was, in order to consider the car a production car they had to roll 500 off the line and make most of them available to the general public. Public would buy them, drive them like they were driving on Bathurst and go splat. > I know there is the indigenous V8's and a Supertouring Championship, > but which is bigger or more respected? They're run on different weekends so they don't actually compete against each other. > And do the some drivers compete in both, or are there defections and > acrimony like CART-IRL? Some drivers compete in both and it's not seen as a bad thing. Cheers, Rod.

The first race at bathurst was in 63 (500 miles)

Not true. The VW won it's class but was not the outright winner. The VW only completed 116 laps. The only car that went the full distance (130 laps) was a Cortina GT driven by Harry Firth and Bob Jan. There were 18 other cars that completed more laps that the VW.

Speedvision is clearing off the 2001 summer races from all over, BTCC, Aussie V8, DTM, and FIA sportscars(think Grand Am...used Riley & Scotts, 10 year old Ferrari 333 sp's with Judd engines and a few Dome's and Courages that ran Le Mans) go to speedvision.com and check out the TV schedules. they will clue you in to getting your VCR fired up.... dave henrie "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Hi Goy, I always said you should have been an Ozzie, with your love of V8 saloon car racing, you would make the perfect immigrant to our sunny shores.. <G> BTW, when are you coming down to Oz for our October V8 race on the mountain, i am sure a few of us could find a spare room for you to park your butt in while you are here.. Maybe we could always arrange a trip around Larry's workshop for you, that might intice you to head Downunder to the land where cars are cars, men are men, women are lovely and internet connections are still stuck firmly in the pleocine epoch era.. :) Cheers, Ron Goy Larsen <[email hidden]> wrote in article <[email hidden]>... > Terry K wrote: > > > > Guys have a look at www.ezydvd.com.au dvd's of Bathurst, I got the 6dvd

Australia, and NZ, is on my "to do" list :-) Some day I'll get my ass down there, preferably in October for "The Great Race", but being self employed in the computer business, that's really a bad time of the year to take a couple of weeks off, so we'll see I guess But yes, I think I'd feel right at home down there and thx for the compliment, no Foster's though I hope, that's only for export right, no Aussie drinks that does he ? :-) Oh, and visiting LP's workshop is very high on my "to do" list, I have nothing but admiration for a guy who refused to trade in his Commodore for the all conquering Nissan Skyline and Sierra Cossie's, and ran Aussie engines when everyone else ran USA based engines, sounds to me like your average regular down to earth no bullshit kinda guy, and he knew how to drive as well :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ * Spam is for losers who can't get business any other way * "Spamkiller" http://www.spamkiller.com

LOL, you DO know us Ozzies, we always export what we can't sell here.. <G> Being an ex-Tasmanina, (yeah i know, the two headed ones) Boags would have to be my favouorite, but VB or 4X would be my next choices in a pinch. :) Larry gained a loyal following for his stand against the Sierra wizz bangs and Yank V8's, a following that is still strong today. As you are probably aware, Oz racing has always been centered around FORD verses GMH (our locally produced versions that is) and when a few of the boys started bringing Sierras into the country, simply to be at the pointy end of the stick, (sorta a bit like the guys on VROC that will only drive a Lotus or Eagle) <G> then the racing scene here got ugly for a couple of years. Freddy Gibson for the Nissan team brought in Godzilla and immediatley walked away with every title there was to win, as how the heck can a rear wheel drive V8 family saloon car keep up and compete with a twin turbo'd 4wd, especially when it came to the wet, then Jimmy wondered why everyone gave him a bum rap when he brought it home at Bathurst in top spot. I was at the mountain that year, and Jimmy's words still echo in my mind. <G> As the "boos" & "hisses" echoed around the presentation area, Jimmy calmly walked up to the microphone and those famous words, now penned in Ozzie motor racing history, were proclaimed for all to hear... "You are nothing but a bunch of arseholes." Ah, how the memories come flooding back of those wet and sleepless nights we spent on top of the mountain.. :)) Sheesh, i'm getting old.. Cheers, Ron

I usually have a glass, or more, of Captain Morgan's Black Label myself, with a bit of coke to take the edge off of it you see :-)
