Improvement in what? What games are youspecifically interested in seeing an improvement in? Different games have different requirements so upgrades will affect certain games more than others. -- Biz "Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and,......things with molecular structures,....and the....." - Ash Richard S Beckett <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:a23sm7$[email hidden]... x-no-archive: yes My current system: Soltek SL-75KAV motherboard Duron 750 o/c 850 (8.5x100) 128 Mb 133 RAM Hercules GF2 MX 32 Mb I managed to get the CPU running at 900Mhz, but was unimpressed by the performance improvement. It was a bit unstable, but it runs OK at 850. If I upgrade the CPU (the mobo will go up to 1.5GHz), at what point will the GF2 become the limiting factor? Also, if I leave everything as is, but slap in another 128Mb RAM, will I see much or any improvement? Thanks. R.
Regardless of which games you run, your current combo is fairly well matched. You could easily grab a 1.2ghz Duron or Athlon XP and keep your mobo, but your GF2 will be the bottle neck. 2 suggestions for you: 1: Your mobo is using the KT133A chipset, which is able to run at 266mhz FSB. Drop the multiplier to 6.5 and bump up the FSB to the 266 setting. It's performance for free :) Option 2: Drop in a Duron 1.2ghz and seriously consider getting a better video card at the same time. GF3 or a Radeon 8500 would be the best options. No need to upgrade your mobo, most benchmarks show only a 5% gain by going to DDR RAM. Not worth the expense (or hassle of reinstalling Windows.) As far as RAM goes? You'll see almost no performance gain by doubling your RAM. All you'll get is longer replays available and not much else. Extra RAM is only really used in 2d apps like Photoshop, AutoCAD, etc. Spend your money on more CPU processing power or the like.
