A good time for a beginner?

GPL beginner's Monza lap times and Eagle versus Ferrari

A new GPL driver asked whether 1:32.99 at Monza in race trim was decent. Regulars said it was very good for a beginner, explained that the Curva Grande cannot be taken flat, and suggested the Eagle for its straight-line speed despite its higher polar moment of inertia. He soon got down to 1:29.73, and others shared tips on using GPLRA and comparing with faster replays.

What chassis?

Yup, all aids are off. Is it possible with a good setup to take that first slow, sweeping right hander flat out? I always have to dip down to 4th and feather the gas. If you are talking about the Curva Grande then no, you will have to slow down a bit. Watch the Monza replay that comes with the game to see what typical speeds are through there. BTW if you can run 1:32's in the Ferrari in race trim, you should be able to get down into the 1:30's or so with the Eagle and a good qualifying (hotlap) setup. Try it. How does the Eagle handle compared to the Ferrari? I'm now down to 1:31.27 during a race and am pretty comfortable with the car. The Eagle has a higher polar moment of inertia than the Ferrari, which means it is more difficult to get it to turn it, and more difficult to get it to straighten out once it starts turning. However it will reach higher speeds on the straights than the Ferrari and you can make up some time there. Since you apparently have some experience in larger cars it may not even be a problem. Monza is a relatively high speed track, and that is what the Eagle is good at. Put it this way, unless you are reaching around 193 mph or better in the Ferrari at the end of the two straights, you will probably be faster in the Eagle. If you don't like the low speed handling of the Eagle, then go for the Lotus. But either one is faster at Monza than the Ferrari, which has a limited top speed due to high drag. When you get really comfortable with the car, you'll notice it *just* going light on the corner, and you can use the little slide to keep a bit of speed. It works better in the Lotus, though, because that's the fastest car. -- "After all, a mere thousand yards... such a harmless little knoll, really" - Raymond Mays on Shelsley Walsh. A very good time for a beginner! But what is your definition of "race trim"? Fuel? /Jens "Target 12" <[email hidden]> skrev i en meddelelse news:[email hidden]...

Yah, fuel was lowered. I thought having a full tank for an 11 lap race was a bit too conservative.=)

Have you looked at your Monza laps in GPLRA? I don't think I ever would have gotten even under 1:32 without it. In my case the Lesmo's were killing me, and then once I got that straightened out it was mostly a matter of cleaning up my entry to the Curva Grande. But different for everyone I suppose. Just d/l'd it - been meaning to for a while, really. Which views do people find most useful? And do you mostly compare your own laps, or your best with alien laps - or sort-of-human laps? Jonny
you might try the BRM as well , I am amazed at how unforgiving that car is. You can really sling it around corners and it barely complains.. On 19 Jan 2002 05:46:39 GMT, [email hidden] (Target 12) wrote:

For me at least the alien laps are somewhat irrelevant. I have watched a few, and got some good ideas from them, but I mostly compare my laps with the Papy demos, and for some tracks I have the Malcolm Edeson replays from the GPLEGs package. For views, it depends on what the problem is. Usually I start by viewing some replays in GPL, so I don't usually need to look at the track map in GPLRA. But sometimes the track map is very helpful just to understand why the line is the way it is. Mostly I go to the speed view, that seems to be the quickest way to point out a problem. Then if I can't figure out why my speed is off, I will go to the lateral acceleration view, the G-G graph, or the track view. But since the type of problems I usually run into right now are related either to braking point or getting back on the throttle, the speed view is the most helpful. I try to compare to a lap that's maybe 3 seconds faster. While I might not FIND those 3 seconds, I might see something that at least gets me CLOSER. Another suggestion made by Maxx is look for an F2 replay that has a similar time as your lap. Since F2's have a slower top speed, that means they run a better line through the corners than you do.
