When loading GPL, it takes a full minute from the time I see
the 'Sierra' screen, to the time it gives me the main menu.
However, when I'm online this only takes about 5 seconds.
Why is this delay (when offline) happening, and what can I
do about stopping it?
The problem is the game is trying to detect a modem, and has to wait for
this to timeout before starting. To get around this, open your CORE.INI and
change the "disable_modem=0" line to "disable_modem=1". Unless you plan to
use direct modem to modem connections you don't need this enabled anyway.

Semi-educated guess.... CD check problem, try the noCD patch.
