The good parts about iRacing (I'm done ranting now)

Good points of iRacing and the F1 1967 rFactor mod

Jeff Reid acknowledged that iRacing's safety rating made rookie drivers courteous and that a shared setup helped him meet the rookie lap standard. The thread moved to iRacing's new Lotus F1 car, which Andrew MacPherson described as a hybrid between the Mazda and Skip Barber. Uwe Schürkamp then recommended the F1 1967 Classic mod for rFactor, which several found brought back GPL memories despite accusations that its author used others' work without credit.

After visiting my friend doing the free trial again, I did notice that the drivers are quite courteous, at least with the rookie Soltice events, so the SR factor seems to be helping. I think it would help more if its formula was actually explained. For NR2003, laps per incident is easy to figure out, except that it was a running average based on the last "?" number of races. If "?" was 20 races, and you had a really bad race, then it would take 20 races to wipe away that bad race. I don't recall the actual number anymore. Another thing that seems to help with the rookie Soltice is that unless there's a huge difference in skills, the closing rate between cars is fairly small. So although the Rookie Soltice is boring, it probably cuts down on the incidents, and after messing with it, I can see where the relatively long time spent in corners can help teach control inputs. An alternative to this could be a circular or figure 8 skid pad, which are also used in driving schools. Perhaps implementing a driving school feature, similar to LFS, would be a nice addition down the road. Next time we'll try Ian Lakes setup for the SRF to see if it can be tamed to be driving by mere mortals.

Not to worry, I don't have the budget, plus I get just as much fun playing need for speed games, arcade versus realistic, both have their appeal, and I'm not that picky about either.

Yeah, but you can still fuck the braking up. Low powered motor sport has its fair share of incidents.

In low speed corners it's relatively easy to slide and catch the back end a little, which gives you a sense of satisfaction. The fastest guys seem to be getting round Watkins Glen in about 1:33... only five seconds faster than me. :-> I've only had one race Wk13 race in it so far, and that was a predictable T1 farce, followed by about ten cars sat in the pits for about two minutes during the new 'tow'/reset process. Plenty of time to get a drink, bite to eat, and visit the toilet before restarting. It was so boring it became funny. They might as well ban all resets altogether, even in Wk 13 & fun races, and be done with it. Anyway, as the 79 is class B I doubt I'll race it much because the race lengths are way beyond my comfort zone level. So ultimately it's probably a poor, but entertaining, investment. However as I have lost control of my wallet again this week the cost will get lost in the flood of money pouring down the iDrain. Last weekend I deleted everything on my computer was all set to give up. A few days later I was spending another $84 on all the content i needed to enjoy Wk13. It is, after all, when iRacing is relaxed enough for me to actually enjoy it. And today I forked out even more for the Lotus, Silverstone, and pre-ordering the Jetta. iRacing is a disease, not a hobby. I now have 24 hours to decide whether to be tempted by the current $25 bonus for a year's subscription. With about $400 (!</swoon>) locked up in iRacing content now I guess it's stupid to let that rot. While I'm here, one feature in the new build which is pretty impressive is the new Triplehead handling. You can now configure the three screens to be rendered as either one continuous screen, or three separate panels, entering the angle of those side screens and some other parameters, to produce genuine 'windows' you can configure to suit your setup. It's a bit more graphically demanding, slowing my setup down a little too much in places, but it's definitely superior to the normal setup. Andrew McP... getting increasingly assimilated despite his continuing frustrations with the service wrapped around that great sim code. PS In the last 12 week season there were more than 7000 active racers. That's quite a big jump, thanks to the various promotions. It'll be interesting to see how many of those 'stick'.
Thanks for your comments, Andy. Indeed it sounds more like an addiction than a hobby with every post you make concerning the subject ;-) Myself, I'm enjoying the rF F1 1967 cars at the moment at Rouen (virtua_lm), we're looking forward to a 20+ grid 50 lap race next Thursday evening (free, mind you...) All the best, Uwe

Where can one download that mod? Been dying to drive the GPL cars in rFactor.

So what's that like - better than GPL?

Thanks. Great mod that brings back many GPL memories.

I may or may not need one more wafffer-thin month. Famous last words. ;-) Andrew McP

I'll have a mop and bucket at the ready.
[email hidden] (Uwe) wrote: > http://www.kiwidirt.com/slimjim/F1Classic_V2.0.rar That is a *great* mod! :-) I've just done a few laps of the 'Ring, and it really did get my grin glands working again. This is a 'must have' mod. Getting some significant air at/near Flugplatz really brought back the memories... as did the suspension damage, the oversteer when mashing the accelerator, and spinning when dropping a gear too hastily. Great stuff! Thanks for pointing it out Uwe. Andrew McP

No worries Andy, glad you like it as much as we do. Apparently, there are some legal / moral / meritocracy issues with this mod as Slimjim was accused in the usual places of ripping off other people's work without giving them credit or worse, asking them for permission first. I don't know what to make of it as he himself claimed it was a fun, quick'n dirty conversion of existing GPL stuff, but I agree the mod drives great and really brings back memories. All the best, Uwe

Just the usual community based sulking.

They've done great work here. Those cars are satisfyingly tough to drive fast, and it really does feel like GPL updated for a modern sim. Andrew McP
