Off-topic: low-flying jets at St Maarten airport
Rich#8 posted a photo of an airliner landing just over a beach at St Maarten. Others shared similar pictures and stories of short Caribbean runways, debated whether one photo was faked, and drifted into methane hydrates and methanol fuel in IndyCar racing. Several confirmed the low approaches are real.

Well, this explains it:

You'll see more scary pictures, if you select 'More: St. Maarten'
Ice D
I've landed @ that airport...but in something small & ancient, like a
Grumman Goose. I had no idea anything as big as a 747 could set down there.
Still, it's nothing like as hairy as the airport in St. Thomas, where the
runway is wrinkled up like a rug from 737s slamming on the brakes--if you
don't get it stopped, you have your choice of hitting a mountain at the end
of the runway...or a Shell station!

A lot of them are. The higher up ones are generally real. Easy ways to
spot....
1. Lack of shadow
2. Landing gear not quite down despite altitude of less than 50 feet
3. Noone looking at the sky despite 767 100 feet above them

Yup. Everything arrived more-or-less in one piece. Except the
flight attendants. We hit some pretty wicked turbulence during
the drink service that knocked down a few of the attendants and
got some cranberry juice on a few unfortunate passengers. Come
to think of it, we overflew the Bermuda Triangle for part of the
flight. Coincidence? :)

There are nice documentaries on the Discovery channel about frozen CO2
banks in the ocean, which, when surfacing, generate heaps of gases and
can even have a plane flying over such a phenomenon explode in
mid-air. Interesting stuff. Ofcourse the Bermuda Polyg... eh Triangle
region seems to have lots of those banks in its ocean floor.
All of this ofcourse since you made it. :)

Ah, I already wondered what would be explodable about CO2. :) But
indeed, methane, don't they use that in Cart? ;-)

The downside of using methanol apart from the low energy level is that
is burn with no visible flame. The big plus is that it can be put out
with water. I think it was after a big accident at indy in 67 they
stopped using gas in the indycars to make it safer. Funny that they
never did that in F1, but they don't race ovals in F1, and after the
invention of the fuel cell it's not really a big problem.

next, look at the shadow of the planes wing. the shadow is to the left of

doesn't this send up flags to anyone else?

Those pictures are not faked. The planes really do land that low there.
I have seen pieces on TV about it as well.

Yup.... I flew to St. Maarten in 1988. I don't recall it being on a
747 though... From what I recall, there were only two or three flights
in per day at that time, so this was not a steady thing. I think we
landed at about 1:00pm. There are other beaches on St. Maarten besides
that one that are a lot less "hazardous".
On that same trip, I recall that there's a small airport on St.Barts
whose runway is situated similarly. In fact, on that beach, there are
warning signs for beachstrollers to look inland for approaching planes
taking off as they're strolling down the beach!
That was my only trip to the Caribbean, so I can't compare it with other
islands, but I enjoyed St. Maarten.
