hi
anyone tried this game ?
it is the latest of the Rally championship series /
Europress /Magnetics.
Very interesting and good physics ( if you keep to the
road )
but sounds are a bit off.
Graphics are much improved over the RS2000 but so
features
like saving replay etc are gone.
so far no much has been publicised about the game
and the website www.rallychampionshipxtreme.com
has not been updated for some time.
The game seems okay though it cannot be compared to Rally Trophy. One thing
that immediately turned my head the other way was the fact that Rally
Extreme did not have a cockpit mode. For me, that ruins it, keeping me from
hardly playing the game at all.

You keep saying that. Has MF done a rally-based follow-up to RC?

It' by Actualize. It was sent to me to review on SGN but
since it's a few months old, not very good at all, and not much had been
said about it, we decided not to do the review. I was wondering if I should
anyway just as a warning.
It tried 3 computers before I could even get it to run. With a V5500 or
V3000 the graphics were completely washed out (almost white) once you got
past the hood. (yes, there are 2 cockpit views, center and driver) Finally,
with the Radeon 8500 I got it to go past the warning "no agp acceleration
detected".
The graphics are old looking except for the shine on the cars, but even
worse, they're a resource hog. Lousy frame rates. Once you start a run, you
can't stop it except for hitting 'alt-F4' and going back to your desktop.
The force feedback is terrible and canned like all Spring effects. It's
either on or off. And, if you can believe this, there are no steering
adjustments. With my kids' TM wheel, it was so jumpy that it was hard to
steer. It wasn't as bad with a Ferrari wheel. Still, you expect some kind of
adjustments to be available.
The sounds were about the only bright spot. Just better than average. The
navigator was hard to understand. After one terrible crash, I looked over at
him (and saw in the replay) and his head was just hanging down. When I
started driving again, his head was still hanging, but bobbing up and down
and he wasn't speaking anymore. Oh God, I think I killed him.
It's a terrible game that's full of potential.

hi deroy
when I read your post, I almost fell off my chair
Because having played "Q network Rally championship"
( bloody long title )
and RC2000,
I enjoyed this game and found lots of features that I
wanted over RC2000.
Let me now do a brief review and perhaps you might
re-consider:
Firstly, no the game is NOT BY MAGNETIC FIELDS.
it is a first simulation by WARTHOG or some british
pig farmer etc.
Published by Actualise.
However it says " this is the 6th in the Rally
Championship series "....
that misled me to assume Magnetic Fields involvement.
PHYSICS
---------------------------
ONe of the greatest achievement is the physic of
traction GRIPPING,
pulling the car under power, it reaaally feels like the
REAL THING !
The car slides and then achieve traction and suddenly
tucks in under power,
much like what we see on TV coverage of the REAL THING.
( I think this is a first for any rally game )
however the car has only damage to the front and rear,
no side damage
or dents (??).
Damaged bonnets and bumper hangs and bobs up, down
in-tune to the
car movement. ( I just love this , it looks so real )
BUT GETTING too far off the road and weird things
happen.
so dont try the cliff, valley, rivers.
BERMUDA triangles abound there.
Road is wider enough for all your handbrake turn
antics , you can really go wild ( though not faster ).
FEATURES
---------------------------------
REPLAYS could not be saved now, maybe a patch ???
soon??
REPLAY ANGLES tend to have a lot of overhead view
which does not show-off the car EXCELLENT PHYSICS.
but when it does work well, it really show off the
game.
No DEADZONE for controllers to be adjusted in game.
I had no problem but forsee some players might find the
controller
too twichy.
SEMI-AUTOMATIC gearbox was available in the RC 2000
game.
but this game allow only full auto or manual.
it has a VEEEERY IRRITATING PACE-CAR as a default.
( user removable )
24 tracks, 20 cars, horrendous menu music,
( why does racing games need such horrendous music ? )
SOUNDS
------------------------------------
SOUND LEVELS between track side view and in car view
is TOO GREAT.
One moment there is eerie silence while the car is
coming over
the hill and next the get "neighbours-screaming" level
for the in-car view.
In car sounds are very detailed ( sfx setting
highest ).
GRAPHIC
-------------------------
A mile and a half ( 1 1/2 ) better than RC2000.
but it default to a high setting , so you need FRAPS
and gradually set them down to a level of comfort.
I got 19 fps on bonnet view.
Replays at 36 fps.
800 x 600 x 16bit, looks great. ( for a TNT 16mb card )
It has a "driver-head" view in which the view sort of
move
like a natural driver would ie look into the bend, not
just straight ahead.
In car detail excellent, wires showing, gadget galore
( non functional ).
World around has great details , ( Need for speed
style )

International Rally Championship was (between Network Q and RC2000). IRC
had improved graphics, etc., over Network Q, but overall was crap.
Even the physics in RC2000 are barely passable, but the stages and graphics
are well done, so it provides some pleasure that way.
Are you saying the physics in this are better than CMR2 and RC2000 and Rally
Masters? And the graphics are better? Is there a demo somewhere that
reflects this?

PHYSICS
---------------------
RC2000 out of the box has some flaws
BUT IT DID ALLOW users to adjust parameters
THAT MADE the differences and I was able to improve on
it
like:
previously you could use the grass to slow down the
car,
put a wheel off and you could take the corner without
braking.
I adjusted that to slippery and the car mishandled on
grass
and glides over them.
RCX ( Xtreme ) do not come with that
"grass-assisted-brake"
and you slide and find grips in-between the gaps on the
road.
( this you really need to see in the replay, very much
like the
TV coverage, car slips , slides and then grips )
the car "cataputs" when it finds the grip ( WRX, EVO
7 )
TO ME, this is what I was looking for, the CORRUPTED
AND OVERWHELMING POWER of turbo rally cars.
OVERALL , RC and RCX physics are quite comparable.
Running bonnet to bonnet view of these 2 games
I did not feel like it is 2 different games.
( again only when within the road area , bear this in
mind
for all things that I mentioned )
Another thing that I really enjoyed with RCX is that
you
have plenty of area to slide, full blown
COUNTERSTEER slide , using sideway slide into
the corner are the stuff of WorldRallyChampionship.
( in fairness, RC2000 was british rally with narrow
roads )
I was looking for CM2 but found this RCX instead
So I can't comment of CM2.
RCX has its problems
but while you keep the car near the road / path
it is fun and very enjoyable without being
arcade.
Graphics are better and less grainy than RC2000.
I ran 800 x 600 x 16bit on both on my TNT / cel450 .
ave 19~26fps with tuned down graphics.
of the 2, RCX has better sense of speed,
something they did with the peripheral vision.
MY STYLE
--------------------------
maybe I should also mention that
I DO NOT DRIVE FLAT OUT for the entire course
and I brake heavily into corners.
I do my best to behave like a real life driver.
I use joystick and plays GPL, N4, needforporsche,
F12000,
SBK2001 and love Screamer2.

Ah, shoot. I thought you almost fell out of your chair because of what I
said about killing the navigator.

Well, I guess all games have physics, but I certainly wouldn't compare this
to CMR2

The windows break, if that can be considered side damage. Yes, the hanging
bumper is a nice effect, but pound it as hard and often as you can and it
never comes off. I gotta get one of these cars for my wife! She could use it
when she's not flying around on her broom.

There is one short cut you can take that brings you to a tilted flat-bed
trailer. Jump it and you land perfectly on the track without missing any
check points. My 7 yr. old boy found it after playing the game for 15
minutes. Of course, he's only 7, but he likes the game even though it
doesn't steer well with his wheel and the graphics are all washed out on his
computer.

In fact, there are no in-game controller adjustments at all. This is just
unforgivable. It works with your joystick because joysticks are non-linear.
If you race using a wheel, expect the steering to be twitchy, or count
yourself lucky. Also, pray the phone doens't ring during a run because
there's no way to pause or stop during game play except 'Alt-F4', which gets
you out of the game and back to your desktop. Again, simply unforgivable.
What in the world were they think of by leaving out these things? Oh, no
force feedback adjustments, either. Not that it matters much. Force feedback
effects are no better than the rest of the game.

The Ghost car was almost always way behind me, so it didn't matter much
whether or not I left him on. I would have thought that, at least during my
first 2 or 3 runs, the car could beat me.

It looks like a joystick and old video card are the way to play this game ;)
The graphics sure weren't great with my V5500 or Radeon 8500.

Ya, I was going to contact them about the loading problems and couldn't find
an email address either.

That's exactly my point for the whole game. It was released in 2001 and I
certainly expect more from any recent game.
There's more I could have complained about. When I loaded it on my kids'
computer, it only saw it as a music cd (which wouldn't play). Nothing's ever
done that before. Our computers are networked, so I loaded it from my cdrw.
It wouldn't load from my dvd-rom (even after washing it properly). I got the
game from another SGN reviewer because it wouldn't load on his computer.
It's not the condition of the cd as far as I know, it's just fussy.
I could just go on and on and on........ (oh, I already have ;)
I'm glad you enjoy the game, John. There's another title out called "Spirit
of Speed, 1937" that you might want to try out.

HI
here's point by point reply
1) yes most rally drivers kill their navigator after
the 3rd corner
for misreading it. So this is realistic.
Dead navigator head bobs up and down with every hump.
it is rather realistic bobbing , don't you think ?
:=)
2) damaged bumper came off rather easily.
NOW, I AM BEGINNING TO HAVE SOME QUESTION about your
version
of THE game ???
In fact, after reading your post I went back to check
and found
that FRONT WHEEL can come off too.......WOW
so far only managed to get ONE OF THE FRONT wheel off.
bonnet too, rear bumper, both front and rear lights.
3) THERE IS A WAY TO PAUSE the game and it is in the
manual.
???? serious question here ???
option to continue, abort and quite the game.
4) a game that looks good on an old video card usually
looks even
better on a new video card, which is the reason for
upgrading.
Would you say ???

No side damage. I thought the windows broke, but that was on Rally Trophy. I
can make the bumper fall off, but not without the hood. So far, anyway, it's
been all or nothing.

great !!
actually you should give the game a chance
you were rather quick to judge it
I found more things with the game each day
IE: handbrake and quickly counter steer
into a corner gets you through much better.
only one front wheel get to be taken out
I could not get the second wheel off.
ice tyres are actually shown as such
very skinny tyres !!
Don't forget the GRAPHIC ADVANCE control.
You get a whole lot of framerates adjusting that
