Not the prettiest sim engine in the world, but perfectly adequate. And with all the
aids turned off this trip around Lime Rock is -- IMO anyway -- rather impressive.
It felt a little sterile at first, but with the aids off I soon started to push the
envelope and discover some rather satisfying weight transfer going on via the FFB.
For some reason I've never managed to get the same level of satisfaction with NKPro,
despite spending much longer in the cockpit. So this is either a sign that I have
no talent at diagnosing a decent sim model whatsoever, or that WRS is doing
something right.
You may decide differently, but this is certainly worth a try.

World Racing Series demo impresses Andrew MacPherson
Andrew MacPherson recommended the World Racing Series demo, praising its physics with aids off at Lime Rock, and bought the full version. Others balked at the price for alpha software with two cars and two tracks, and Jan Verschueren reported graphics corruption and other problems. A tangent about Windows 7 release candidates turned into a petty argument.
Automated summary.

On the ripoff scale of one to iRacing it only rates a 2.3 IMO. Anyway, I didn't say
buy it, I suggested people might like to try the demo. I think it's a remarkably
satisfying driving model, and I actually did buy it after spending half an hour or
so lapping Lime Rock.
The other car's not as immediately impressive, but Laguna Seca is an entertaining
drive in the FR2000, which is somewhere between the iRacing Skip Barber and Mazda,
with physics and FFB in the same league (not necessarily equal, but in the same
league for certain).
Anyway, I have no doubt this will struggle to get an audience. NKPro has been
around a lot longer and it struggles. So spending money on it may not be wise. But
I'm in a charitable mood, and the guy working on this deserves a big pat on the
back.
Oh, I think you also get his bike sim for free (and vice versa, if you have the
bike sim already you get this free) which improves the value for money somewhat.

Hmm, looks more like an 8.5 to me. I'll try the demo though and see how
it is. I have heard of it before just never bothered to research it
further. I seem to remember people saying it was a free racing sim but
back when it was free it probably only came with one car with three
wheels and half a track completed.
Thanks for the heads-up, Andy. I hadn't heard of this one before. Does
it support the g25 in a decent manner?

It certainly supports mine very well Uwe. :-) Once calibrated I've had no problems,
and the FFB is pretty convincing IMO.
I did some messing about this morning dropping the wing settings, and I think this
guy really knows what he's doing when it comes to the physics engine.
I may be proved wrong by wiser and less easily distracted sim-heads, but so far the
FR2000 is proving to be a very enjoyable ride indeed. Obviously that doesn't mean
this project is destined for huge success, but I do think it means it should at
least be on everyone's radar as a project to watch.

I'll be genuinely interested in what other people think. I do miss the iRacing Skip
Barber, but this is the first virtual car I've raced so far which really makes me
feel that if iRacing disappeared tomorrow (so I could never go back even if I
wanted to) I wouldn't be too bothered. With all the aids off it scratches my
hardcore sim-itch very nicely indeed.
Of course finding a race online will be harder than finding any gold left in Fort
Knox, but such is life. :-)

That's what the older games are for. Such is the trade-off. I haven't even
found tracks for anything newer than NFS 5 (porsche unleashed/2000) online
(in the NFS line that is).

Well, charging for alpha software isn't going to win the developer any

Torrents most likely (assuming you've even *seen* W7). Besides it was a
*free* download for a working demo.

Working demo?? It's been available as a full version RC candidate
reelase for a long time now. I have 2 legit ciodes for it too. Prior
to that it was avalible as a beta for a long time too. This RC release
is free to use until March 2010 and then after that it will nag you
once per hour until June 2010 to buy the release version but will
still function fine. I already orderd my release copy for 50% off
about 2 months back. You just get off the boat from the darkest
jungles of Africa or what?

RC means release candidate and not the version to be sold in stores.
It's been free to use for a long time and is good until March 2010.
That means they gave me a free OS to use for about 1 year, so yes,
free.

I just had the same problem, but googling worldracingseries brought up the page (a
few links down) and the (same!) url worked from that link. Weird.

Ok, thanks for the info.
Is there any mandatory feedback? Is feedback made particularly easy?

Not mandatory but you can submit feedback. You can't get the RC
anymore anyway and all you can get now is a 90day trial of the release
version. You can't pre-order it for 50% off anymore either as that was
just a one month deal they had going a while back. I think if you are
in the UK they may have some deal on now though as they didn't offer
it there until later than it was offered here and in the UK they have
a deal on the full version and not just the upgrade version like here.

I've no idea whether you're right or wrong because a NFS:Shift-style blur had
descended upon this conversation a few posts ago. It is a shame though that this
group can never really hold itself together for very long without arguing about
something daft.
I guess that's why we're a shadow of our former selves... a quiet, angry little

You've got to be kidding me, MacP.
I encountered following problems:
- image corruption issues in the 3D part with large parts of the screen
missing. I have to use the roll bar view to see where I'm going and even
then I'm taking righthanders blind (bit of an issue at LRP).
- for something which looks to have LFS-level graphics it runs like crap at
any sort of serious resolution
- force feedback oscillates out of control regardless of strenght/damping
setting.
A very poor effort as far as I can tell.

I am clearly no longer a reliable source of opinion. :-)
I didn't have those problems, and with anisotropic filtering turned up (it's very
low at first) found it visually acceptable. It's not Shift, but then Shift doesn't
have such a satisfying physics model.
