Notable threadNASCAR Racing 2002 Season arrives in stores: new sim or rehash?
Posters reported NR2002 reaching US stores around February 13 and discussed likely prices. Early impressions praised the sound and a heavier, more stock-car-like feel, but noted collision physics and some AI issues remained. A long debate followed on whether it was a new sim or a $50 rehash of NASCAR 4, with John Pancoast saying only NASCAR 1, 2 and 4 were true new sims.

I'm guessing 39.00 or 49.00.
If you can wait about a month, it'll probably go on sale for 29.00.

Circuit City has really been using the big releases as loss leaders lately.
One of the big chains will have it for $29.99 within the first two weeks.
Mark my word. I always buy at Best Buy as soon as games are released since
they have the 30 day 110% pricematch.

BestBuy doesn't even have Nascar 2002 listed as a new "coming soon" game.
Their website has it, but not for instore pickup (most likely because they
don't carry it in the store). I think Sierra has even turned off stores due
to the high price for this upgrade.

For kiddies? Why, because it tries to simulate a stock car, instead of a
1967 F1 car with stock car graphics? That's all N4 was.

Remember, Eric said the "hoped" to get the compressed textures for opengl in
a patch. But are you saying that N2002 doesn't even have the N4 opengl?

Well, one thing I always noticed about N4 was sometimes when you
touched tires with another car your car would go shooting up the track
like, oh I don't know, an open wheel car might do.
The other thing that bugged me about N4 (and this just may be my
driving skills), but when another car would come down on you and make
contact with your RF it would cause *your* car to spin out. Or if you
got in the back of someone *your* car would spin out. When I watch
the real thing ususually it is the other way around.

And from what I've read in posts over at the Sierra forums. IT STILL HAPPENS
IN 2002. All the bumping physics seem to have remained, as well as a few of
the AI issues. They seem to have alleviated quite a few of the AI problems
but unfortunately there are enouph left to classify 2002 as a patch and not
a new game worthy of the $50 price tag.

Can't speak for multiplayer, since latency will always make bumping a
chancy proposition (at least until the world is running on 100Mbps
fiber) but I can bump and rub the AI quite nicely. Had lots of 3 wide
action in my test Daytona 10% length/94% difficulty race and I traded
paint the whole time. Only wreck was when Jimmy Johnson came down on
bobby Labonte and then went for a wild barrell roll down the
backstretch.
> They seem to have alleviated quite a few of the AI problems

In the demo, I felt the physics were almost exactly the same as N4's.
Playing the full version, I'm not so sure. The torque curve seems to
be more accurate, and even when I get a perfect line on most tracks
I'm nowhere near as fast as I am in N4 (with fast setups, anyway).
The driving tutorials are great, and often amusing (altho what Darrell
is saying doesn't always match up with what the driver is doing).
Haven't messed with the replay theater, but it looks really slick.
Heck, I rolled my eyes when I heard about the 3 mile fantasy track but
I have to admit it's more interesting than half the real tracks...that
banking is EVIL when the tires start to wear. I was able to get
enough of a run down the backstraight last night in a multiplayer race
that I managed to slingshot waaaay past the leaders and hit the
banking hard enough that POW engine gone, race over. Speaking of POW,
the damage model is niiiiice, and seems to be fairly balanced between
the AI and human cars.
Overall, I think N2002 is well worth the money so far. Throw in the
512x512 textures and fantastic sound engine (the tire scrubbing puts
F1 2001 to shame) and I'm pretty happy with my $50 purchase. Next
year it may take some serious changes to get me to buy the game, but
at least I've got a full year of play ahead of me.
Jason
Yes, sadly, the collision physics are still pretty weak, at least
online. I had made my way through trouble in a race last night when a
car "warped into being" right in front of me. I got down to about
20mph before t-boning it. We locked together for a brief moment,
almost stopped on the track, then the other car bounced 100 yards down
the track at about 90 mph before coming to a rest on its roof.
Sigh. Maybe next time.
Maybe this is just a symptom of position prediction code. I havent
messed around with single player much to find out.
Even so, it is still a pretty dang cool game, and well worth the $50.

I agree with you John, the cars seem to be more correct in the weight and
tire size department now. Still easy to spin, but not like GPL4 err I mean
N4 was.
The damage model has been beefed up too, I saw more car parts on the track
last night than any other night online with the NR series. Even saw a few
rearends pushed all the way up to the C pillar, nice touch. Its also nice
that a tap from someone beside and in front of you doesn't wreck 'you' as
easily now. That seems like it should have been an open wheel
characterisitic anyway, glad it is gone/toned down.
Anything other than a rehash. I already have NR1999, guess I'll get
another. N1 to N2 was a new sim. N2 to N4 was a new sim. N4 to N2002
isn't. Three new Nascar sims in N1, N2, N4. Three rehashes in N1999, N3,
and N2002.
No big deal, I accept it as part of business. Just don't say it's a new
sim :)

added a bunch of tracks, and the CTS. With N2002, I just don't see anything
major having changed. Everything(of what I consider worthwhile) added is
just an add-on for N4 IMO, that could have been done with a patch.
Having said that "major" isn't very definitive, so what the hell. In the
end, it's irrelevant; like Andre said, $50 for the amount of entertainment
is cheap and Sierra/Papy aren't in the business to run in the red.

ATTENTION ALL GAME DEVELOPERS! $50.00 IS STILL CONSIDERED CHEAP. RAISE YOUR
RATES!
Ever played Serious Sam? That was a full game with great graphics and guess
what??? It only cost $25.00 BRAND NEW ON THE SHELF THE FIRST DAY!
Some companies do get it right, Sierra doesn't seem to be one of them. I'm
probably still gonna have to get it since my league is going to it but I
really don't like forking out $50 for a patch.
HEY SIERRA/PAPY! How about a 50% discount coupon in the box for those of us
with N4!

Wanna know something? Even if GPL2 would cost $500, I'd still buy it.
Seriously.
Stupid? People fork out much more than $500 for their computer, wheels
and pedals, why not for the sim they play for a couple of years?

And.. how many hours did you play Serious Sam before it ended up on
your shelf, never to be played again?
And how many hours of fun did you have with Nascar 4?

Difficult question where a patch ends and where a new version begins..
but don't you think that N2002 has a little bit too much new things to
be called a patch?

With the Papy Nascar titles, there seems to be a rule that
if you are coming up behind an AI car entering a turn, and
you attempt to pass him low, he will come down and wreck
you UNLESS you hear your spotter say "Car high". I can't
think of how many times I have just barely made it and
breathed a big sigh of relief upon hearing "Car high".
The "spotter says Car high" code must be closely linked
to the "AI realizes you're there" code.
Last night in the N2002 demo, it happened to me at
Atlanta in the dogleg. I was coming up behind two
AI cars in a line. I tried to pass the rear car
low, but before I heard "Car high" he decided to
move low out of his line and pass the front AI. He hit
me, I spun, they went merrily on their way. I have
to admit in the replay it just looked like "wunnem deals."

No flame here, just can't buy the logic, Deer Hunter hit the shelves at $10.
My son loved the graphics, to each his own.
It's simple economics, price times units sold equals sales income. If they
cut the price to $25, I'm guessing they wouldn't double their units sold, so
their sales income would go down. It's the same way they price sugar, and a
lot of us buy that too.

Isn't the lack thereof the reason people call it GP2.5...?<g>
