My nomination goes to...
280-Zzzzzap! Datsun (Nissan) certainly didn't get much from this
license, if they even licensed the name of the 280-Z for it.
This arcade game was outdated when it was released in the early
1980's. Gameplay consisted simply of two rows of vertical white
"blips" that "moved" down the screen in simulated perspective
and motion plus they moved side to side to simulate turns and curves.
The game had a steering wheel and accelerator, possibly a gearshift,
maybe a brake pedal.
Opinion on some classic arcade emulation sites often concludes
that this "game" was a simple technology demo that an over excited
company official decided to ship as-is. :)
Nominations for the worst driving game ever
Gregg E. nominated the arcade game 280-Zzzzzap as the worst driving game ever. Others named Test Drive 4-6, Ford Racing, the Autobahn budget racers, ABC Sports Road to Indy, Spirit of Speed 1937 and even GP3, while a few defended Andretti Racing. John Bodin plugged his Spirit of Heat 1937 mod as what SoS should have been.
game comparisonhumour
Automated summary.
i have to say test drive's 4, 5, and 6. shittiest physics in a driving game
ever. i realize the games were supposed to be arcade, but the physics would
have sucked no matter what you touted the game as. i'm sure i could think
of a worse one, but i'm too damn tired right now.

Can still get Al Unser over here - it'll set you back a 5 or three for a
10 in Bargain Books. (You can get the original Papy Nascar Racing in the
same deal as well.)

For the Al Jr game - the PC one, I take it?
I remember the NES one a lot more...played that game waaaaaaay too
much....ultra-simple, but come on, it was a NES...best part is, it was
closer to an F1 sim than a CART sim. ;)
Sticking to my console-gamer roots, there's also Bill Elliot's NASCAR

the only two NES games I've seen that STILL can't be emulated.

Grand Prix Legends. Just a bunch of stupid old cars, and far too slow by
today's standards. What the hell were they thinking with this game? Did they
really think we wouldn't notice that F1 racing had changed dramatically over
the years! The only way this game would work, is if they'd call it "Grand

Which emulator do you use? I know that Nesticle (which was abandoned
years ago) won't play them but all of the ones I've tried recently
that are still in development play them flawlessly.
In another story, someone at work sold me a NES in mint condition with
4 controllers and around 300-400 games for $20. Yep, $20. It will
look nice next to my atari 2600 and the dreamcast I picked up last
week.

Hmm, can't say I've ever tried any emulator other than NESticle...love the
name, hehe...though I should really try another, since yeah, I know,
NESticle is long-abandoned.

I know what you mean. I remember seeing the first preview of SoS in (I
think) PC Gamer - there was one big screenshot and some PR waffle, and
it looked *fantastic*. At the time I really thought historic racing
sims might take off as a genre in the same way that classic (real) cars
have. Then I tried the demo, and went away and cried, almost literally,
at the utter waste of a wonderful concept.
For a year or so after that I told everyone (as can be seen from some
of my earlier posts here) that SoS was indeed the worst driving game
ever. Then someone (I'm too lazy to look up who) pointed me in the
direction of that little control-device prog and told me the full game
was much better than the demo. And they were right. Still waaaay below
what it should have been, but acceptable for an occasional thrash.

That was John Bodin, and yes SoS got a little bit better with that
Stickworks utility, at least it became playable.
Still a pile of crap though :-/

be crap today, but yesterday it was good enough to
eat. I'm still voting for Autobahn as the worst.

Andretti Racing was actually my first PC racing game, and it prompted me to buy
my first wheel............. Go figure....

LOL!
It's damned funny to read the newspapers now, everyone is blaming
everyone for not winning. :)

The original Demolition Derby was a blast. Nice black and white
monitor placed face up in a table style cabinet with 4 or maybe six
steering wheels and other controls around it. The later incarnation
of demo derby in color with higher resolution graphics was a real
bitch to control. Looked pretty though.

The one I remember is one where you had to steer a car (or two in two-player
games) and try to run over as many pedestrians as possible in order to score
points (a tombstone appearing in their place after you ran them over). Can't
forget the name of that one... it was in the very first arcade hall that opened
here in the late 70s...

somebody forget the *nice* games SEGA did once try to sell on PC .. undrivable
... and ... maybe Viper Racing ... for some reason you cannot drive that with a
keyboard ... I spend 2 minutes doing 3 corners and then smartly used the -
excellent - option : uninstall, that function was great !

Viper Racing a bad racing game because you can't play it with a
keyboard.. Right..

As a second follow up...
Just picked up Al Unser Jr Turbo Racing for the NES I bought recently.
Man...the game is over 10 years old and it is still as addicting as
the first time I played it. The purchasing of upgrades to the car was
way ahead of its time, and the racing is nearly on par with Pit Stop 2
(well, the colecovision and commodore 64 versions - the pc version is
amazingly bad) and Pole Position 2, the other really killer 80's
racing games.
Oh yeah, as far as CART goes. CART Flag-to-Flag for the Dreamcast is
one of the best arcade racers I've ever played. Finished a 100% race
at Laguna Seca with full damage/full course yellows yesterday. Makes
me with Papy would give it another go. =/
