Nvidia's record earnings and memories of 3dfx

John Metcow posted Nvidia's record quarterly results and asked who had contributed. Most had bought GeForce cards or an Xbox, while Voodoo5 owners defended their cards and noted community drivers kept them running. The thread wandered into Amiga and Atari ST nostalgia.

I think they can thank the XBox for that enormous rise - more power to them. The XBox has astonishing visuals. Neil B
NOT AT ALL in fact it is good news for NVIDIA to continue churning out class leading solutions , they need resources Microsoft ACTUALLY did give them a bundle of money to do the XBOX solution... when Nvidia annouced that they would enter 3D graphics back in the old days, I knew 3DFX would not stand a chance against a big semiconductor firm like them and true enough, 3DFX is history "Douglas Ellison" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:a4io93$i0sn$[email hidden]...

3Dfx got a fair amount of my money too: 3 Voodoo 2's (the original, then a replacement after I killed it, then a second for SLI) 1 Voodoo 3 (replacing the SLI'd Voodoo 2's) But the last payment went to nVidia for my GF2 Ultra. 3dfx got my money for the Voodoo1, V2, and V5. No complaints from the product angle. I do have a complaint about 3dfx's lies & mismanagement which cost me $10k US dollars on their stock. 3dfx said, (paraphrasing, opinion) "Everything's OK. Rampage is almost ready. Voodoo5 sales are beyond expectations. Sell out to NVDA? No plans at all...everything's just peachy. Our credit is good. Gigapixel tech is awesome. OEM deals, just around the corner. We are winning the lawsuit." 3dfx's ex-management makes Enron look positively honest and forthcoming in comparison. Anyone else lose a bundle on 3dfx AND Enron? I'm much angrier at Leupp than I am at Lay, for some reason. They should both share a cell with Big Horny Bubba for a long time IMHO. Call it a long-term Viagra test program. When NVDA went IPO, I *laughed* like crazy at the IPO stock price. I think it was higher than 3dfx's stock value at the time and I thought that was ludicrous. Even now looking back I don't fully understand how the TNT1/2 were so successful in the OEM market over the Voodoo3 and Velocity line. 32-bit color was not a *usable* feature for games at the time, same with texture size. And, 3dfx had Glide support, critical for many existing games. Broad compatability should have won, or at least competed with, unusable marketing checkboxes. But V3 was almost totally shut out of OEMs! I still play games that require Glide support, I dunno how people do without it. Voodoo4 & 5 were inexcusably late ("we broke the tools" BS), and lacked the T&L marketing checkbox, sealing whatever fate 3dfx might have had. "3dfx you bastards, you killed Rampage!" Thus spake [email hidden] on Sun, 17 Feb 2002 10:19:52 GMT, as he held forth on "Re: did you contribute to this 129 % ???" >Even now looking back I don't fully understand >how the TNT1/2 were so successful in the OEM market over the Voodoo3 >and Velocity line. In a word?... Marketing. OEM accounts for the lion's share of hardware component sales, and business represents the lion's share of PC/desktop distribution. In the corporate IT world, perception and reputation are major factors. Technically, the key difference during the critical period when those reputations and perceptions were established was that the nVidia products were full capability solutions, as opposed to the offerings from 3Dfx which were entertainment "adjuncts". nVidia maintained more of an "office" image... at least until they were well established in that channel. 3Dfx, OTOH, marketed themselves first and foremost as a gaming solution... and that eventually bit them in the ass. Those who followed the fortunes of IBM, Apple and Commodore during the 80s will, I'm sure, recognize this pattern.

Wrong. Yes the readme says that, but if you spend $7.95 for the Metabyte Wicked GL drivers and copy the Opengl32.dll file into the MOHAA file, it will run just fine. At least it does on my PIII 550. Don't know why the readme says that; it's misleading a lot of folks. Bill Yowell Earth Angel wrote:

The fix for that game is very simple, so simple in fact that EA could easily have implemented it in the game with a few minutes extra work. All you have to do is take the wicked3D gl .dll and add an extension to the shortcut to run the game using the opengl32.dll. Problem solved, all movies play and all graphical erros solved. > personally I wouldn't have paid *any* money for a card that can't run > current releases and has no driver or support of any sort (they justceased > all that) There is a thriving community creating drivers for the Voodoo cards still, including the X3DFX guys, and the cards will be around for some years to come. There isn't a card on the market yet that can do FSAA better than hte V5... When the GF4 hits the streets we may see some competition, but the GF4 is going to be using 3DFX designs and tech.... Well, I certainly did. Nvidia has provided me with a notebook which gives me substantially better framerates and beautiful visuals in GPL and F1-2001 than the current ATI chips. Nobody else is even a player in the notebook market. OK, notebook simmers are a minority, but my hat's off to Nvidia for this one. Stephen
