Why do NR2002 sound problems hit popular hardware?

Sal V. asked how Papyrus could have trouble with the most popular video and sound cards. Dave Henrie suggested Nvidia and Creative drivers push the PCI bus too hard, while others pointed to IRQ sharing and outdated drivers. Sal noted NR2002 was the only program giving him audio problems, and the core.ini buffer-size fix was suggested again.

Very simple, 'if' either of these pieces of hardware cheat to acheive their preformance levels, it will hamper a legal program trying to interface through them. I suspect both SB and Nvidia are pushing the limits on their hardware, and that creates problems for programs that need the resources that the hardware is gobbling up. Now do you alter your program to cater to hardware manufacturers that are not following protocols or do you write your program properly and expect the Hardware folks to get their act together? dave henrie > Sal V. > >
That's interesting. I guess that the 50 other games, sims and programs that I run without any problems are all altered and do not follow the proper protocol. This would include Nascar 3 & 4 as well as GPL and even MS Windows. Sorry I don't buy it. Sal V. "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:c_kc8.84375$fK1.4218765@rwcrnsc54...

After reinstalling my GF3 video drivers with the ones that came with my card, all of my weird problems went away. I used to have the "can't hear my own engine" problem. Now, it is pretty much drowning everything else out, like I have it configured. The game seems more smooth, and my framerates haven't really suffered, as far as I can tell. Why would a video driver impact sound? Go figure, but it definitely made a difference. Don't know what version of the drivers these are, but it's something like 14.xx IMO, most of the driver "improvements" we get are the result of software authors who are recoding to optimise performance in popular benchmarking software. Nvidia's more recent drivers have been found to get better performance by hogging the bus. You hog the bus and it will cause problems for other peripherals, like soundcards.

Not to worry, It is just a supposition on my part, but keep digging, you may find little bits of truth in my theory. Even some new messges in this thread kinda support it. Yes most games on most systems will be ok, but as the stress levels reach higher and higher for both the hardware and software, odd things like sound corruption will occur. People who have changed VIDEO drivers have fixed sound problems....what does that tell you? dave henrie

"Biz" < > Yet I have an nVidia card and SB and not one problem. > -- > Biz Yes there are plenty of users like yourself with no hassles, but too many others that DO have problems to ignore the situation. I would think the first thing to do is make sure the vid card and sound card have their own IRQ assignment. One thing I remember from the old Rendition days of overclocking the Verite` boards was to keep the vid card and sound card as FAR apart as possible. Definately NEVER have the sound card nestled up to the vid card in the very next pci slot. (but don't worry, there will be plenty of guys chip in now who will say they have always had the two side by side with no worries...) dave henrie :)
You bring up an excellent point Dave. So many just have IRQ sharing issues, outdated drivers, out of date bios versions, etc...If they fixed most of those problems, virutally all those problems go away. If your machine is setup cleanly and appropriately, problems are usually minimized or even eliminated. But its so much easier for most to put the blame everywhere but where it should be. -- Biz "Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and,......things with molecular structures,....and the....." - Ash Dave Henrie <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:sHAc8.89611$fK1.4224901@rwcrnsc54... > > "Biz" < > > Yet I have an nVidia card and SB and not one problem. > > -- > > Biz > > Yes there are plenty of users like yourself with no hassles, but too many > others that DO have problems to ignore the situation. > I would think the first thing to do is make sure the vid card and sound > card have their own IRQ assignment. My machine(s) have NO IRQ sharing / conflicts or any other problems for that matter. Soundcard drivers are up to date but I have been trying various video nVidia reference drivers. I mentioned it before I'll mention it again. Nascar 2002 Season is THE only game, sim or program I have any audio problems with. Nascar-4 audio works perfectly, Nascar 2002 has updated audio and doesn't work correctly. Now I'll add another twist. I installed N2k2 Season on my old PC which has a completely different hardware spec and get the same results, popping / crackling audio. I will now list the major components of two completely different machines that produce the same audio problems. Machine # 1 Intel D850GB motherboard P4 1.7 Ghz 512 Rambus nVidia GeForce 3 TI 500 Creative SB Audigy using 4 speaker Digital output to Creative FPS2000 Digital Windows XP Home Machine # 2 Abit BE6-II motherboard PIII 800 Mhz 256 PC100 Ram nVidia GeForce 2 Ultra Philips Acoustic Edge PSC706 using 2 speakers analog Windows 98 SE I still feel it's the software but I do understand what you guys are saying about pushing hardware to the limits as far as programing drivers goes. But the facts are the facts. N2k2 is the common denominator in this equation. Sal V. "Biz" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:rXFc8.835$[email hidden]... > You bring up an excellent point Dave. I never had the clicking/popping sounds in N4 either like a ton of people did. Did you just for grins try regular output and not digital on your 1st system, just to see if there was a way around it. ANd since I see XP on the 1st machine, there is no way I beleive that some things aren't sharing IRQ's on that system. -- Biz "Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and,......things with molecular structures,....and the....." - Ash Sal V. <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:SIGc8.55527$[email hidden]... > My machine(s) have NO IRQ sharing / conflicts or any other problems for that > matter. I dont have any IRQ's shared on my XP system and I also have this crappy crckling sound. My system specs are as follows: AMD Duron 700 AK-74EC motherboard w/VIA chipset 448mb PC133 SDRam Radeon 64mb DDR ViVo VC Soundblaster Live! Value SC All this with the latest drivers for everything. I cant figure out why its happening either.
Have any of you tried adjusting the buffer size in the core.ini file? I never had the snap crackle pop in N4 but I do in NR2002. A guy I work with, which has a SB Live card, said that he had the SCP in N4 and set this value to 4 and it went away. He aslo said it work in NR2002 as well. Needless to say its the first thing I'm doing when I get home 2night. MadDAWG
