In this newsgroup...maybe tou don't like it, i have played F1RC, F1-2001,
SCGT, LeMans24h, all NFS, MGPRS2,Grand Prix Legends...and The best one i've
found(so far) is Grand Prix 3, the most realistic, the most playable, very
good graphics, a lot of internet patches and add-ons, regularly updated. I
think it's the best of all, Why do you never talk about it?
Guillermo
Why GP3 gets little love on the newsgroup
Guillermo Lopez asked why the group ignored Grand Prix 3, which he considered the best sim. Replies cited the lack of real multiplayer, identical car performance, the 25.6 fps limit and its close similarity to GP2. Some said the GP3 2000 update improved the physics, and Stephen Ferguson felt critics exaggerated how little had changed.
Automated summary.
Main reason for me, is that the cars are all the same. No performance
difference. That, and no online racing :)

aside, GP3 appears to have fallen out of favour with r.a.s. as many, myself
included, found it dated (25.6 fps!!, blocky graphics, crappy multiplayer)
and too similar to its predecessor. I was excited when I got it, but after a
few hours I realized it was the exact same game (with some window dressing)
I had played to death a few years earlier. So, like many in here, I turned
my attention to GPL. Papyrus has done a great job with GPL (as all the
beautiful mods available will attest). That was a game that was ahead of its
time. I keep hoping they'll revisit the Indycar series or release the ICR2
source code (like ID has done with Doom, Quake, etc..).

well, but has some major glaring ommisions. No real multiplayer being a
big problem around here. It was also a problem of big expectations that may
have not be totally fulfilled and thus left a taste of 'what could have
been.'
I'm sure you will still find many many users who prefer GP3 vs F1 2001 and
F1RC. But with GP4 coming out in a couple of months, I think most users
here have moved on.

So far as I can see, most messages posted in RAS fall into the category of:
* GPL is fantastic, I'm so excited, etc,
* I'm having a problem with xxx (where xxx = the most recently released
game),
* I love/hate xxx (where xxx = the most recently released game),
* Hardware issues.
Note - there might be others that I don't know about - my killfile is quite
large.
GP3 is a fine game. It doesn't fall into any of these categories, so there
aren't many posts. Feel free to start up a thread.

"Oh, dusted off Grand Prix 2?"
"Nah, downloaded GP3."
I had to look VERY closely...but yep, it's this >< much above GP2...
Very disappointing, IMO.

Because it's not the best, nor the most realistic, nore the most playable,
nor the one with very good graphics. Oh, perhaps I'll agree it has lots of
third-party utilities and enhancements, but it will always be flawed at it's
core.

i suppose there's not much talk about it because it doesn't make enough
technical trouble, and it's slowly getting old too (but that's no real
reason).
all the wonderful tools and stuff were available within weeks after it's
been published, so there isn't much to add anymore.

I don't think the graphics were really improved with the 2000 update.
But the physics were improved, along with a couple of other things
which I can't remember now.
I hated GP3 but I really liked GP3 2000. Untill F1 2001 came along,
after playing that, GP3 2000 feels 'dead'.
PS After watching the screenshots of GP4, I don't think the graphics
in GP4 will be much better too.. I don't know, but I have a bad
feeling about GP4 :-/

First of all I like GP2, by the second, it's terribly different, second one
is more playable, graphics are so faster, it includes different weather
situations. It the most real of all.
Guillermo
Hehehehe, true that. =)
But aside from that...the GP2 feel is identical...the way the cars "move"
(or don't) hasn't changed one iota...sounds...the old school way of faking
3d...

It's what, 8 years old? For a game that old, it
rocks.
The problem is, GP3 looks like it might be 6 years old, if even that. GPL
looks leaps and bounds better.
The comparison between GP3 and GP2 is a lot more like N2002 vs N4 or N1999
vs N2, and a lot less like N4 vs N3 / N3 vs N2 / N2 vs N1. Even N3, while
still on the same old engine, added some vastly improved graphics,
especially the smoke and dirt effects (which I also prefer to GP3).
I think Crammond probably finished GP3 years ago...then it got lost in the
mail after it went gold and finally got delivered to the publisher a few
years late. =P

Well, I think you exaggerate. If you ever run GP2 and GP3 back to back it's
quite an obvious and appreciable step up in overall game play and graphics
quality. What's strange about GP3 is the glaring contrasts in quality of
execution. On the one hand you have bitmap tires, pixelly bits here and
there, and bizarre clipping. This is all a legacy of the old engine with a
token effort at 3D support painted on at the end. On the other hand, some
of the textures in GP3 look superb (in my opinion). The roadside banners on
the S/F straights look crisper in GP3 than in F1-2001 on everything but the
"full" setting in EA's title, and GP3 was running on an 8Mb card.
F1-2001 has wiped GP3 off my HD, but I'm quite interested in what GP4 will
be like. Personally, I like the rather "organic" look of the screenshots so
far, and the details in some of the buildings and distant scenery (tufts of
grass at the bottoms of fences, irregular sand patches) is quite nice if you
really take a look at it.
