Will Win. 2000 run nascar 2002 better than win98?
I have a Pen.4-1.5ghz, Windows 98, 640 MB Ram, Elsa Gladiac 920
GeForce 3 64MB Video Card(over clocked),driver 21.83(i've tryed them
all) , a Hitachi 21" Monitor, Desktop is 1024x768x16. I use the
Enditall program, Nvmax, Cacheman, I've done every trick out
there(core, rendogl ect..). I've tried every resolution in 2002, but I
have to use open gl 800x600x16 to get the best FPS. With all med
settings (some min), sounds down to 8. At Daytona at the rear I start
out with 25fps, when the pack brakes away it gets higher, but if were
still together coming around 4 it gets down to 25-28 fps. I was
wondering if its win98? I'm thankful it runs but it just seems it
should run better. If you have any ideas I would be thankful but if
you don't that's ok.
Happy racing.

Don't think it's 98; I'm using it, with a slightly lesser system than
your, but with twice the fps.

Yup, sounds like a driver issue somewhere. I use Win XP Pro, but can say
that Win98SE should be cranking more FPS than that. How many cars ahead do
you have drawn ahead? That may be the issue. I get 50-60 FPS under Win XP
with fairly high detail in 1024x768x16 without using any overclocking.
1.2Ghz AMD, GF3, 512MB RAM. I only have 15 cars ahead and 5 behind. 8 sounds
heard, max world, car and trackside details. 80% draw ahead. All check boxes
but wheel, anisotropic filtering (another FPS killer) and skid marks. Using
23.11 drivers (FSAA 2x enabled) and a SB Audigy sound card, 3d sound
disabled. Of course I don't race offline so 15 cars ahead is typically a
plenty for me, if you must have 30 or 42 cars ahead then you might need more
horespower...
Doesn't Win 98 have a problem when dealing with more than 512 mb of ram.
Performance actually degrades when you reach or go over the 512 mark. I've
read about this a few times, but don't have a source handy. Anyone else care
to comment.

I only have 15 cars ahead and 5 behind. 8 Win98 is choking on the 640 megs of Ram. UNLESS you really need that much
for some application, pull out a stick and you should find things in Win98
run MUCH faster.
The other OS's handle larger memory sizes better. Nothing wrong with
win98, there are NO titles out there that I know of that NEED more than
512megs..but...it's just a known issue.

Thanks for all the help. I'll pull a stick out to see what that does.
Will let you know what happens.
Thanks again

The OS will run
with more installed fine. but its just not really necessary. If you really have apps that need more
than 512, you shouldn't be running any 9X OS in the first place.

And fixable. You just need to limit the Vcache to 512mb or less in the
system.ini file to correct this issue.

You don't need to pull out a stick. Just open system.ini and scroll down to
the [vcache] heading. Add this line below the heading, MaxFileCache=xxxx
(xxxx being the amount of memory you want to use for Vcache measured in
Kilobytes). Try this setting MaxFileCache=61440
That's 60mb (1024x60=61440) Save and reboot.
Don't even need to do that; just go into msconfig. Hit the advanced
button, click on "limit memory to" and set it to whatever.

That limits amount of ram to Win98. The problem with Win98 is not that it
can't use over 512mb, but that Vcache will use it all up if you have over
512mb. The method I posted just limits amount to Vacache. This is the
official fix posted by Microsoft in their Knowledge base article on this
issue. What you posted is good for limiting the amount of available ram to
windows for a game lik Longbow2 that won't run if you have over xxx ram
installed.
This doesn't work for everyone, but it is still good to try...

Just open system.ini and scroll down Ah, ok, thanks. I stand corrected. LB2 is exactly what I use it for :)
