I sat in Irvine/Schumacher's 96" F1 Ferrari today......prep for a seat pour
next week. I'm going to get to test this car maybe next month at Willow
Springs. I'd like to know some history on this car....but not being an F1
buff fan.....don't even know where to look.
Here's what I know:
1. It was Irvine's back up car....and Michael's test car (didn't he join
Ferrari mid-way through 96' or something).
2. It has Michael's pour seat in it now....and the suspension is set for
Monaco....so that's probably where it was last run.
3. It has a titanium gearbox enclosure.....not carbon fiber...so that means
it has some 95' aspects to it.....right?
4. Currently it has the high nose, but we have the low nose for it too.
5. The throttle is "fly by wire"....so that is a 96' aspect of the car,
right?
I'd appreciate any info you guys who follow F1 closely could provide on this
car. Was it ever actually raced? That sort of stuff.
I'm going to go slow.....I don't want to bend this piece of sweetness!

Flame warTom Pabst to test Schumacher's 1996 Ferrari F1 car
Tom Pabst said he had sat in a 1996 Ferrari F1 car used by Irvine and Schumacher, which his company would build a simulator for, and asked about its history. Some shared photo galleries and chassis history tips, while Ed Solheim and Douglas Ellison called the post off-topic bragging, reviving old grudges over Pabst's past posts. Others defended him and asked to hear more about the project.

The 1996 testing cars definitely were "Malboro Orange", at least the early
testing cars that were used at Maranello. I'm almost sure of that, 90%
sure. If there is no number in front of the rear wheels (the car had black
side winglet panels like the front and rear wings), then it was an early
testing car.
If it has a shark nose, then it was one of their model after the Montral GP
(First Friday practice was the last time Ferrari ever used a non-shark
nose). The F310 before that was by far one the most beautiful modern
Ferrari ever. Probably the most unique, I would say.

Schumi left Benneton at the end of '95, right after winning his second
championship.

I believe that that is a '96 gear box, thought I don't know that much about
F1 cars in the mid 90's, I believe that they probably ran a titanium gearbox
in '96. Some teams still do so it is not totally out of the question that
they may have run the car with it then.

I know that all cars are fly by wire now, so at worst it is '96, and at best
it is more recent then that!
Hope my limited knowledge helped you some, you lucky bastard!

It has a photo gallery for the 1996 season. Maybe it can help you. As I
recall Michael crashed on the first or second lap, while leading.

Well I live in F1 alley... I have 3 F1 maufacturers within about 5-10 miles
of my home. Jaguar, Jordan and Arrows. Jaguar is the closest and I've been
down there quite a few times as an old school friend is one of the managers.
I've played around with several of the cars.. not got to drive one though..
I'm a big bloke, and can't fit in the fuckers. :o(
My ex used to work for Jordan and she blagged us tickets for Hockenheim
including travel & Accommodation all for free... That was a few years ago
though when Reubens was driving for them.
Sadly the cost of going to see a race is so expensive I can no longer afford
it... Unless I win the lottery.. then I'm following it around the globe...
with sea cruises between races. :o)

Arent there chassis numbers on a little metal plate on the
inside of the car... about where your wrists might be?
Tom, might I suggest that rec.autos.sport.f1.moderated could be a good forum
to ask this question. There are some very knowledgable people over there.

Perhaps it should be posted in "ras-f1"....but I didn't know about that
newsgroup at the time (thanks, Ed).
We are going to be making a simulator of this car for the owner.....that is
why we are involved with it. I should have said that, but didn't because of
my haste. I will have some pics of the car posted here in a day or two.
This will be a fun project....I'll do my best to keep you guys posted on its
progress. As far as I know.....this type of thing has never been done at
this level of a race car.

I didn't take offense to the "chimp" wisecrack at all.
In fact, I tend to agree with you and have had those kinds of thoughts many
times over the years. You are right.....the "fast guys" are not always the
ones in the seat. Very often, its the guy with the "money" or a sponsor in
his pocket......that gets the ride over a faster alternative driver. That's
the "business side" of racing and you or I are not ever going to change
that. So....being frustrated about it is kind of a waste of energy. At
least....that's how I've managed to deal with this in my mind over the
years. Also, I've been the benefactor a couple times of this.......getting
a "ride" because I had a sponsor......not because I was fast. So...I guess
it kind of evens out.
However, your ability to recognize a potential mistake and apologize for it
is quite remarkable. I respect you just for having that ability and the
guts to go through with what your heart said was the right thing to do. I
applaud you for doing this....and thank you (even though I didn't consider
it necessary). It would be nice if others could follow your lead.....but
this is real-life on r.a.s. just like everywhere else......so its not very
pragmatic to think everyone has your character and guts. That was cool,
man....thanks.

Once again Tom..... WTF does this have to do with r.a.s ???
You dont see other posting pictures of every car there ever was in a sim
here, do you???
Post about physics and graphics I woulnd'nt mind - but these offtopic post
is just a waste of time.
Please take this to r.a.s.f1 - ***where it belongs*** (and come back here
when you want to tallk about physics etc.
I thought you knew this after all these years ??!!??

Tom,
I, for one, enjoyed your post and the follow-up, even if it may be OT. I'm
looking forward to any future posts you have on this topic. Looks like a
fascinating project. If you take the thread elsewhere, let us know. (Kudos to

I DEFINITELY would :)
It seems that since Tom started that famous thread, he has been totally
unforgiven by many people here. I think that is tragic, even though I still

An apology on his behalf would go a long way to helping - but the thread
finished with him maintaining a generally offensive, incorrect and arrogant
stance
I mean - hell, I'm jealous as hell - but notice he did not brag about the
opportunity to drive - just mentioned it 'in passing'

I suppose I should look into getting a breathylizer(sp) interlock on my
computer, as this isn't the first time I've done this. Fortunately, it
only happens every other month or so.

Whew <wiping sweat from brow>, sure glad I didn't piss you off! (As a
rule, I don't flame people.) It's always interesting to see what kind of
thoughts I post when I get like that. I think what set me off is what
happened to Greg Ray this week, so that's where I was coming from. (Al
Jr. is a little faster than the average chimp though, so in that respect
I was wrong.)
Thanks for understanding.

"Rec.Autos.Simulators"....I'm (we...several people at PR will be hands-on
for this project) building a simulator of a somewhat famous car....driven by
a very famous "current" F1 driver....and depicted in several sims we all
race and discuss here. I just don't see how this is off-topic....any more
than how discussing "car physics" is necessarily "on-topic." Since I don't
follow F1 closely.....and I know many do on this newsgroup....I thought
asking about it here was reasonable. I was hoping to get a head-start on
finding information about this car...from links or "direction" given by
those who do follow F1 closely and might know more about "searching" on this
topic than I do. I'm not sure why this has seemed to muster your
wrath.....you are pretty much a mellow guy most of the time. It seems like
you are a bit overboard on this criticism of my post. I can read down just
a few days of posts on r.a.s. and find a substantial number of posts that
are more "off-topic" than mine....and I don't see you jumping down those
author's throats about them. Are you singling me out for some reason? It
appears to me that you are. So, I have to ask myself, "why?"

As you may remember this is not the first time I've asked you to take these
off-topic posts where they belong... infact I think this is the 5th or 6th
time I've asked you to do so.
And even though "you" might be building a simulator of this car (whilch I
reckon will be exclusive to the owner anyway) - I still fail to see what you
inital post had to do with this news group.. I will also be so bold and say
that until "you" got something relevant to simulators - that is when
actually got a simulator of the car/experience or are in the process of
actually coding/planning the sim, then this whole topic is... well - off
topic.

Well, I have to say, "thank you" to you, Ian. I'm not sure why being
excited about getting to do this project....and share it with you guys is
interpreted by a few people as "bragging." Heck, I had nothing to do with
getting this job. The owner just called me one day a couple weeks back and
said, "I own Michael Schumacher's 96' F1 Ferrari test car....and I want you
to build me a simulator of it." It was a completely handed to me "no
brainer."
I get to drive the car...because I will be doing the engine sounds for
it....and I need to know what the heck the thing sounds like at
speed....from the cockpit. If there was a way I could have all of you guys
drive it too.....I'd do it. Its totally a fun thing.....and I'm not "racing
it"....I'm just driving the darn thing! I just don't see how that's
"bragging" about this. If one of you guys get to drive a real-world race
car.....I want you to post on r.a.s. and tell us about it. I want to read
how it really felt...and how you felt....all the details please. I'm
certainly not going to then accuse you of bragging....geeeesh!
As far as that "famous thread" goes.....I regret having written that post, I
promise you. I apologized for the stupid joke about the cheating......but
it was just not accepted by a few people no matter what I said. As far as
my "opinion"....I assume you mean, my opinion that hotlapping isn't
necessarily good for sim racing.....having credibility in the real racing
world. Heck, I'm not the first person to say that.....I'm probably not even
on the first 100 list of people who've had the same opinion (or something
similar). I don't even think its worthy of "hot topic" status....let alone
the hullabaloo it created. But....what the f? Life goes on.
Thanks again, Ian.

I am sure that Goy would agree with me, that OT posts should never appear on
r.a.s. He and I would never, ever stoop so low as to discuss Danish or Norwegian
beer, nor the merits of a certain national ice hockey team. ;-)
Personally, I don't find Tom's post too OT, but he is still a stupid jerk, which
is quite obvious from his follow-ups. He never seems to get "it" nor humor. We
all have hits and misses in that regard, but Tom's lame attempts are usually as
stirring as something generated by a computer with a neural network, which has
been forcefed "101 bad jokes" and "102 even inferior jokes".

Ok Tom... once more from the top.
It's not what you said about hotlapping, it's how it came out. I don't know
how others interpreted it, but to me it sounded like "you guys have to stop
comparing laptimes and hotlapping because it's scaring my customers away".
Now if there's any strong overal sentiment on RAS I think it's a profound
dislike of corporate attitude, so you, perhaps unwittingly, skewed your
argument before you even got started. Recognition does not nescessarily
include commercially viable on this forum. I refer you to my reply in your
"This isn't going to be popular"-thread for my take on this situation.
Your second foray was even more ill fated and the less said the better
perhaps, but IMO, certainly at the time, yourself and your take on simracing
were not well known enough on RAS to assume it would be taken in the right
way. You basically reaped what you had sown there.
I might have missed it (I tend to zone out once the tit for tat between you
and your former NROS buddies starts), but as far as I've read this latest
message is the closest you've ever come to apologising for that whole mess.
I'll skip the latest installment of the Sears Point saga as I did the posts
on the ng and get to the "latent hostility". In my language there's a saying
which goes: "He who wants to beat a dog is sure to find a stick". Meaning
any excuse is good enough when you carry a grudge.
I'm guilty too, I couldn't help it. Being casually branded as a disgrace to
the sport really hurt, badly. I may be a "hobby simracer", but I take it
pretty damn seriously and I still don't think I deserved that. Nevertheless
my tone in my reply to Mac was unwarranted and I apologise.
Anyhow, good luck driving the ex-Schumacher Ferrari and let us know how it
went (on topic posts are too boring <G>). BTW, why would the fact Schumacher
drove it impart an extra sense of awe? -Surely he considers the car junk by
now as it's no longer competitive? -Just curious.

It's always a big point for the people selling and buying old F1s. Don't
ask me why either, but it has a certain "trainspotting" appeal to it
(knowing all the details). Every ad in "Classic & Sportscars" for old F1
racers usually lists who drove it and when. Even if it was the T-car for
the whole season, if Mansell or Senna once put their bottom in it, then it's
gold...
