Rally Trophy - Split-Axis?

Getting split-axis pedals working in Rally Trophy

Bert could not get split-axis pedals working in Rally Trophy with a Wingman Formula Force and TSW pedals. After trying controller ID changes and reinstalls, Gerry Aitken's fix of editing the brake axis range and OverrideRanges in input.ini worked. A side spat broke out over Bert's tone, and posters criticised the game's controller setup.

Is there any way to get split-axis to work with Rally Trophy? (The US retail version) I've downloaded/installed the patch and I still can only get RT to work on combined axis on my LWFF. I would really like to find a way to have RT recognize 2 controllers at once (ie - LWFF with TSW peds) like the Papy sims, but I'd settle for split axis on one controller. I can't believe that this sim would have been praised so much here on RAS if it doesn't support split-axis at all. Thanks, Bert
Not sure why it isn't working for you- I have a MOMO, and it's worked in dual axis just fine- both before and after the patch. I just went into the controller setup and assigned the axes to the proper controls- went smooth as silk. Sorry I can't help your situation, but it DOES work just fine...maybe try the forums at www.rallytrophy.com or http://rt.relaygames.com ...... On the LWFF, you have to simply leave the in-game axis configuration alone - it will default to however you have it setup in the windows joystick setup (i.e. with combined pedals turned off). It won't show it in the conguration screen but if you go into the game and accelerate, then tap the brakes, you'll be able to see that it 's working. I think you may have to delete the controller and set it up again once you've fiddled with the RT controller axis settings. -- Damien Smith [email hidden] ICQ: 77028579 F1 2001 rank: +23.742
I'll gave that a try. Thanks! Perhaps you can elaborate on this a bit. In the RT controller configuration screen -- what do you have the pedals set at? Accelerate+Brake, right? One would think that this screen would have a separate setting for the throttle and a separate setting for the brake. But there's only one setting for the the entire pedal set. That is what's confusing to me. Bert Damien Smith wrote:

Tried your recommendations, and unfortunately it still does not work. No matter what I do, when set-up for split-axis, the pedals simply do not work in Rally Trophy. The engine does not even rev when pressing the throttle, and the car continues to roll down hill when pressing the brake. Combined-axis works fine, but that's not what I want to use. Any other thoughts/suggestions? Bert Damien Smith wrote:

OK. The saga continues..... Believe it or not, I've gotten the game to recognize my multiple controllers -- LWFF (USB) on ID#1 and TSW (gameport) on ID #3. The TSW pedals even work in split-axis mode. It appeasr that what I needd to do was make sure that BOTH controleers were assigned to Player 1. However, the problem now is that the brake pedal is reversed. In other words, I come to a stop when I lift OFF of the brake pedal, and the throttle's effect INCREASES the more I step on the brake pedal. I've tried reversing the range values for both the Y axis and the RY axis (one at a time) in the input.ini file, but that had no effect. Within the game, I have the Brake on the Y-axis and the accelerator on the Z axis. And, Yes, the pedals are set up correctly within the Windows game controller screen.... Any ideas on how to "unreverse" the brake pedal? Thanks! (So near and yet so far...) Bert Damien Smith wrote:

Dang that sounds like a problem I had YEARS ago with the Unsplit TM T2. Back then....I was basically told...."yer screwed" I can't even remember the program either..just remember trying to drive with my feet crossed over each other on different pedals. sorry can't help ya there. dh "BRH @attbi.com>" <"bertrh<no-spam> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > OK. Step 1 - Throw away the TSW and remove it from the game controllers in the control pedal - at least until you get the LWFF pedals working. Make sure the LWFF is the preferred device i.e. ID 1 in Win9X Step 2 - Ensure that if you're using WinXP you have the latest 4.11c drivers installed and are running DX8.1. Step 3 - Get a utility which tells you which axes you're pedals are. DXtweak I think it's called - get it from www.wingmanteam.com Accelerator should be Z and brake should be RZ Step 4 - Reinstall Rally Trophy + patch. Step 5 - Run the game without touching the in-game joystick axis config. If this doesn't work, then you've got serious Windows and/or Directinput issues.

Same problem here using Momo and Redline pedals. It's nothing to do with a 'serious Windows and/or Directinput issues' as Damien suggested, it's just another game with crap controller configuration options! All the developers had to do was copy the way Papy do it and you would have thought a beta tester or two would have picked it up!! Gerry
Well, I'm using Win98SE not XP, so I'm still using the 3.62 drivers for the LWFF. Regarding DX8.1, RT's CD comes with DX 8.0a, so why would I need to install 8.1? I installed DX off of the RT CD and it made no difference. I followed your advice and checked the controller settings for the TSW peds in DXTweak. Throttle is Z and Brake is Y. I haven't yet tried re-installing RT and the patch yet, but I don't hold out much hope that it would make any difference....... I'm starting to agree with the other poster that RT's controller set-up simply is crap, as all my other sims (and I have a lot of them....) run with these controllers (or some with just the LWFF) just fine with my system as is. I had these same problems with the RT demo, but someone indicated that these problems were fixed in the retail version. Apparently not...... Damien Smith wrote:

BRH....i have read this whole thread and some of your other posts and i am sorry but i must air my resent at your aggressive attitude to this whole issue. May i start by making a simple suggestion. I have both the Logitech wheel you have and the MS FF usb. I also did what i thought was logical(to me..) and upon installation of RT went first to Controller Config. I pressed here and pushed there and it didnt work in game. But why...? I had only completed the same sort of routine i do with all my games. Then i thought, new game, new bugs perhaps a few have had the same problem and have posted on the Jowood Forum. Voila!!...The trick is to not think logically but to trust(...can we ever..lol) the game and it's own little configuration procedures. The answer was to not touch Controller Config at all from installation...not at all.. Then ingame, magically my wheel worked perfect and all functions were mysteriously assigned.....and dont ask me how. This little eureka moment was followed by my mate buying the game and ringing next night to say he couldnt get it to work. You guessed it,he had pressed and pushed in Controller Config as i did and same result, wheel didnt work. I also have kept a pretty close check on the Jowood Forum and it has this and other MINOR niggles explained and resolved alomost every day of the week. I suggest you goto the Jowood Forum and explain your problem and one of the games programmers will almost instantly reply to you with a solution...why..? You may ask why...?..Reason being that Jowood have from early doors tried to involve the players in their games development both with reaction to the demo and subsequent additions to the patch list. Before RT i had never heard of Jowood or Bugbear but after experiencing their excellent service i would recommend them 100%. Thus,i am sickened by your aggressive rantings which stink of petulance and immaturety from where i sit. Do the mature and decent thing and Uninstall RT and patch.Plug in just your LWW wheel and pedals(NOT the TSW). Install RT and patch.Start the game, dont touch Controller Config at all.See if you can drive it ok.Then go from there. But also post your little niggle with Jowood Forum(or search for the same problem posted before) i am sure you can get this game running nicely without the need to get nasty verbally and then having the shame to post it here like it's normal.Total guess but if 5,000 have bought this game i bet 100 havent got your problem, please see the point here not the exact figures :) I hope you get it sorted because it is an excellent game with immersion levels so high i end up dry mouthed most of the time. Morgan, I'm sorry that my post(s) have gotten you so upset! Sheesh, they weren't even directed at you. I've since re-read the post that you categorized as my "aggressive attitude". I'm sorry if it came across that way, but I really believe that you're being a bit oversensitive. That being said, I will take your advice and will not do anything "logical" (your phrase, not mine). I will re-install the game (and subsequently the patch) with only the LWFF controller being active in the Windows controller screen, and will report back the results here. I've already installed DX 8.1 as suggested by others here (even though RT's installation CD doesn't install it.) Bert Morgan Boof wrote:

Well, As suggested by someone here, I removed all controllers from the Windows Controllers screen, except for the LWFF. (I left the LWFF set for split-axis, since that was the whole point of this thread...) I then uninstalled RT, rebooted, then re-installed it. I fired it up, WITHOUT changing anything on the controller's configuration screen, went to try a Rally, and Guess What? IT STILL DOESN'T WORK. Both pedals are still dead. To avoid offending the sensibilities of some here, let me just say that I still think that the controller support and set-up in RT is, shall we say "sub-par". (Is that politically-correct enough?) <onto my soapbox...> I'm sorry, but when a game doesn't properly support a standard popular game controller without having you jump through hoops, we have a right to criticize. My controllers work just fine in every other game I own. ...and I still don't think that I'm displaying an "aggressive attitude". <off of my soapbox...> Thank you all for your responses. BRH wrote:

BRH Look in windoze gaming options, test your TSW brake and tell where the little cross in the window starts and where it finishes it's travel when you press it down. I guessing it starts NOT from the centre? I just got it working, spit axis, with my Redlines and Momo. I just had to change the input.ini a little. It's hard to describe what you need to do, so just tell the result of the gaming options test screen and I should be able to tell you the values to change. Gerry

Gerry, The brake starts in the exact center of the box, and as I step on it, the little cross moves to the bottom center of the box. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Bert Gerry Aitken wrote:

Gerry, WHOOPS! My mistake -- I recalibrated the pedals in Windows and now the little cross starts at the TOP center of the box and moves to the bottom center as I step on the brake. -- Sorry for the confusion. Bert BRH wrote:

Have you tried resetting the controller in the RT controller setup, that worked for me pre patch. Look bottom left of the conroller config screen. Andi. "Mike Beauchamp" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Oe%d8.26776$[email hidden]...

Find the line in input.ini that reads: # (often brake) AnalogYAxisRange = { 100, -100}; and change it thus: # (often brake) AnalogYAxisRange = { -100, 0}; Then find this line: OverrideRanges = 0; and change it to: OverrideRanges = 1; Save changes and that should work. Great game, shit controller setup! Good luck Gerry

Yes, I have Andi. What eventually did the trick was adjusting some of the values in the input.ini file. Thanks for your suggestion, though . Andi Cole wrote:

Gerry, You are the man! That worked perfectly. I agree with you about the controller set-up in this game. But better watch your language (tongue-in-cheek), as you might offend Mr. Morgan Boof (who must own stock in Jowood or something....). Thanks again! Bert Gerry Aitken wrote:

My pleasure, Bert! It's just a shame the patch didn't explain this very simple procedure in the read.me. I tried the form, as Boof suggested, I know you did too. Did you notice ALL the problems with controller setups being posted there? People are even returning the game to the shops in frustration. All completely unnecessary, all Bugbear had to do was follow a standard that everybody knows and understands. In other words, just do it the Papy way, it's simply and it works. Their way was stupid and it didn't! Gerry
