Flame warNR2002 cockpit sounds in roof view sparks view debate

Schooner asked for a mod to use NR2002's cockpit engine sounds in roof view, and a sound pack was found on a fan site. The 117-post thread became a heated debate over cockpit versus roof camera, covering realism, peripheral vision, league rules forcing cockpit view and ways to bypass them. It degenerated into insults and FPS-game banter.

Has anyone been able to make a mod so that the cockpit sounds could be used in roof view? The in car sounds are great and I would love to use them for other views if possible.

Well I thought that someone might have done it is all. I think it uses the same format dat files as N$ so extraction should be much easier. Don't assume that since it has only been out a few days that it hasn't been done. The sound was extracted from the demo for N4 in only a few days. What do you mean?<asking not challenging> I can agree that when your hood is smushed up to the windscreen that is very difficult to see, but other than that, how is driving 'incar' more dangerous than floating up above the car where all the bugs get in yer teeth? Your Situational Awareness isn't limited because your in the car. However, after ranting,(which I "HAVE" to do everytime this subject comes up :> ) I will agree that I haven't found a league yet that won't let a driver pick his own view... Dave, my league doesn't force a view :) Anyone who wants to drive from the air can(though none do); you can always spot them, they're the ones a few laps down :) -John "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:XV7e8.16977$[email hidden]... > > "> What do you mean?<asking not challenging> I can agree that when yourhood > is smushed up to the windscreen that is very difficult to see, but other > than that, how is driving 'incar' more dangerous than floating up abovethe > car where all the bugs get in yer teeth? > Your Situational Awareness isn't limited because your in the car. > However, after ranting,(which I "HAVE" to do everytime this subject comesup

Never mind. You guys are right, in car is best. We normally can spot the in car drivers in races, their the ones blocking as they can't see cars beside them. I personally feel roof view is best mix of 2 as it provides a more realistic view and provides some side to side vision. I too do not like the full car view but in car is too limited. Why is it wrong to use the roof view? It's a more realistic feel in my opinion. No view is "WRONG", it's whatever works best for the driver. "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:__7e8.17003$[email hidden]...

John, So everyone in your league uses in car view? To each his own I guess. the view and sound is nice but limits your vision too much I find, especially for online racing where you need to allow for warp and such. Sorry Schooner just an old old personal bias of mine. I agree it's ok to let others use the view they feel most comfy with. But my feeling of wrong-ness comes from instinct, not rulebooks. If I attempt a flight sim, I fly from inside the plane, not behind...if I play other titles, I try and get the view that is closest to what I would see in real life...Even motorcycle sims, that rarely get a saddle view done right, with feedback cues so you know body posisiton your rider is in...I still go with some sort of handlbar view...Stubborn I guess and slower than many other posters here too, so take that into account. ;( But I'll be the slowest slug here rather than climb up on a roof. That went out with Biplanes and wingwalkers... :) dave henrie
Because you have more vision left and right and it's not boxed in like the in car view which is too cluttered and blocked. "Joachim Trensz" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:a5bbqa$5tk62$[email hidden]...

Definately agre Schooner that anyone should use whatever they want; as to one being realistic or not, who cares, it's a game, though the cockpit view is more realistic for obvious reasons IMO. The problem I've always run into in the past, is roof riders actually causing more wrecks/problems than anyone else. If someone can do it safely, more power to them. -John "Schooner" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:wzae8.20971$[email hidden]...

For me, I've always been able to "feel" what the car is doing much better, from the incar view. There are alot of visual que's as to whats going on with the car that you learn to notice from the cockpit. It seems that people who complain about the incar view, would rather make excuses then take the time to get use to it. It does take some time learn the situational awareness you need from the cockpit. but it is very possible. Most if not all of the top guys I've raced with online use the cockpit view and have no trouble running door to door. Why not just edit the in-car view to give as muchview as possible...what I mean is have theviewable part of the window extend almost completly top to bottom and left to right...Then change the dash so that all the dials are in this smaller portion of viewable dash On Sun, 24 Feb 2002 10:38:10 -0500, "MadDAWG" <[email hidden]> wrote: >http://www.discountdescramblers.com/nascar.html > >MadDAWG > >
but wouldn't this restricted situational awareness be precisely what real Nascar drivers have to deal with, caged and boxed into their metal cage, with their full protection helmets, HANS devices around their necks, strapped into their lowrider seats, side windows obscured by these safety nets, rear view (and mirror) obscured by the rollcage, etc. etc.? That look left/right option isn't very practical. Doesn't work too well in any sim. The way the cockpit view is now, it's as if I'm in my own car with horse blinders on. Shhhh, roof view is wrong and all the "high end leagues" use cockpit. You better change or be left behind. Not sure what "high end" means. There are a lot of leagues around and I never seen any that was supposedly the best of the best. They all run for various reasons be that race length, tracks run, time of races, geographic location, etc. Just kidding, I find it funny how some think they are better than others because they force the cockpit view and feel that makes them better drivers. Has papy improved the look left/right views in NR2002 final version (demo only here), what I mean is have they smoothed it out like some flight sims? Like no snap to view, I never got use to it even from GPL, and all I ever used it for is on the pace lap, too dangerous at high speed IMO. I thought I read about this somewhere, but as I can't find the game readme or a link to it anywhere, so I guess I'll never know until I buy the full version. Ok, I didn't realize that I was so close to the bottom of this loooong thread an should of kept reading a little further. Being able to pan your left/right view like the flight sims may be a cool feature, ya know just a little like when your turning to keep your eyes on the target. oops I'm getting a little of subject here, ah what the hell. Ok...I normally don't say much, but there's one thing that has been bugging me for the last couple of years about the subject of "not being able to see cars beside them" stuff. You don't NEED to see what or who is beside you when you're sim-racing. There is one important feature that I believe some online drivers don't even know about. And that is the F2/Enter for Nascar 3, or F2/Shift for N2002. When you utilize those keys, you can see EXACTLY where the other car is. It shows itself on the screen in the form of how many seconds, or tenths-of-a-second that it is away from you. And if the car behind you is anywhere in the .1 to .2 second range, HOLD YOUR LINE and don't be changing lanes! Because they are TOO CLOSE! It really gets to me when somebody wrecks somebody else and then comes on chat and says "sorry...I didn't see you in my mirror!" Ok..down off my soapbox. Schooner, the debate about car views can best be explained with that all the papy Nascar & GPL (and other) are considered as simulations or simulators of racing a car, thus the "Do you drive your car from the roof?" Me? I prefer the cockpit in car view, there is nothing like getting sandwich up against the wall on the backstretch err, "SuperStretch" at Daytona and getting flipped onto your roof, sparks flying, sliding entirely down the backstretch err, "SuperStretch" into turn 3 and having the car roll down the banking and righting itself and driving away. Know what I mean? :-) -- 1907 - Daytona Beach Florida Glenn H. Curtiss rode a V8 powered motorcycle to a 136.30 mph record in the measured mile. I take back the statement about the horse blinders. You get no peripheral advantage riding on the roof as opposed to the cockpit. I just did a little check. Yes,.. but in this context: if I own a simulated cockpit and the projected view is the bumper view moved up and back and placed on the virtual windscreen of the nascar AND I join a cockpit only server, I'm I cheating? Gerry
You're totally taking my comment out of context Schooner. If you read the whole thing, you'd see I agreed with you. IN MY EXPERIENCE, roof drivers cause more problems than others, period, simple as that. Not all of course, but MOST. If you want to post with the attitude as you stated, "Driving from the cockpit is unrealistic", don't get uptight when others disagree. So again, I could care less which view is used, it's a game. As long as someone can do it safely, drive from the stands for all I care. Someone like yourself or Dave, I'm sure can drive from the roof safely. More power to you; it's about having fun. However, in four years of running a league, time and time again, I've seen roof drivers cause problems because they, as THEY admitted, can't drive safely enough. Yup, I'll agree with you there, use what works for you. Using any view, control, PC, etc does not make anyone a better driver. It's easier to do better with good equipment but it all comes down to practice and being familiar with what you use. It's like the guys you see on the golf course with custom clubs, fancy bags, designer clothes that couldn't hit a ball straight if their life depended on it. I for one like to keep things are realistic as possible as well, I use a decent wheel on a decent PC and run 100% online races but my preference is still to use the roof view as I just find it gives me more of a real sim feel than the cockpit view. Neither is right or wrong, just personal preference. Does not wearing a helmet or sitting in 120 degree heat make it less real? Sure, but I doubt those that feel that the cockpit view is the only real way to race expose them selves to such conditions, although I am sure there are some that ever go that far in their sim setup :) "John Pancoast" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I think Sascar also forces cockpit. I've never used the "kite" view for anything but checking to see if my car had damage or not. I seem to recall doing just that in a recent sascar event<G> www.sascar.com "Jay Taylor" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:bvbe8.24331$[email hidden]...

HELLO!! If you were in an actual stock car, helment on and buckled up, how much of a view do you think you'd have? Your realistic view while driving a stock car IS cluttered and blocked, that's why they have spotters. realistic, pfft...make any excuse you want to, makes no difference. To me your only driving a simulation when you simulate what the actual "real world" driver experiences. When they come up with a way to simulate g-forces, I'll be using that too, even if it makes me vomit! lol "Schooner" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:wzae8.20971$[email hidden]...

Yes I agree but even the ability to shift your eyes in a real car makes a big difference in the field of view. It only takes turning your head a few degrees to get the extra view to know when someone is near. I'm not looking for a completely uncluttered view, my point is that the field of vision is not 100% realistic, just as the roof or kite views are not either. Each offers a different view of the real world. I'm not trying to make any excuses, I'm just stating an opinion and explaining why I seem one view as being as good and providing as much realism as another. Each driver should choose their own best view, much the same way as real drivers choose what items are in their cockpit (yes I know much of it is dictated by rules) that might block their vision. Some use large right side head rests, others don't like them. Tony Stewart for example resisted using the HANS or similar device because it limited head movement. DE wouldn't use a full face helmet because it limited his vision and sense of the car. Was he any less realistic for doing this if everyone else had a full face helmet? No, it's driver preference. Because we do not get to feel the car like would happen in a real car, we must adapt to views, sounds, force feedback, etc to make up for this. Each driver will find something different works for them in doing this. Just because the cockpit view looks real doesn't mean it conveys the same sense of reality to all drivers. I personally think it distracts you from the action on the track in front of you, but again that is my personal view on it. To me the roof view gives me the level of realism that I would expect. Schooner; Being a DE fan for twenty years have to correct you here. He wore an open faced mainly because he thought the "jaw" part of a full-faced caused more injuried then solved. I.e. he thought it acted like a pivot point when a drivers head went down. He stated this on numerous occasions. Had nothing to do with vision, etc. There was a thought from the _media_ that it allowed him to feel the air pressure, especially at SS.........which he laughed at :) -John "Schooner" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:D2Ae8.21493$[email hidden]... > Yes I agree but even the ability to shift your eyes in a real car makes a > big difference in the field of view. Being a driver who uses the arcade view, I have found that I can drive in car better than incar drivers can jump outside the car. imo that tells me driving outside the car teaches you more. For me, I run in arcade, and I dont get lapped on long runs too often. I have given setups to some very good incar drivers and, to a man, they all say the car is too loose. Thats primarily the reason I drive outside the car. Other than to block <vbg> -- Tim White INTRAC Motorsports www.birds-i-view.com/intrac "Jay Taylor" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9Kbe8.24332$[email hidden]... Jay Taylor
In your Nascar/series/cup directory, you make three views (all roof) naming them "make_a.cam" "make_b.cam" "make_b.cam" respectively. Now, whenever someone tries to force that stupid "cockpit" (yeah right) view on you, they only force another roof view. Filthy AIMBOTTER!
I see how you name them, but I still don't understand how someone 'makes' a roof cam, or any other. I've noticed on this web site http://www.discountdescramblers.com/nascar.html that someone has adjusted the roof view down into the car, and forward. There's a pic in the zip file which shows the view so it can be previewed before installing. I'd like to bring it back, but keep the same height. This is the part I was commenting on, and I didnt call you a purist but since you think I did...every argument I have ever seen about driving in-car was to point out the attempt at realism. Thats all I was referring to. So why do YOU drive incar? And I like html, sue me :) "John Pancoast" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... Because it feels more like driving a race car to me. Never really had the interest/need to try something else. -John "Tim" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:QwTe8.51679$[email hidden]... REALLY! Ah a brother camper :) Gerry
Actually, I play a very aggressive style, moving fast and never standing around. But hey, if it makes you feel better, then sure I'll say it.. I camp everyday everywhere all the time, that's all I do really. I also shot JFK and I'm really Osama Bin Ladin. I can be any and all of your other "bad guys" if it helps you deal with my roof driving also. No sweat of my back. :) "Gerry Aitken" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

You carry on running around, son, I'll just snipe you on your way past. Then, of course, you'll start crying about how a nasty 'cheating' camper just shot you. How the fork is it cheating anyway?

If it's not at a spawn point, I don't think it is cheating. Not IMHO. -- Fester "Is it that we need a nobrainer Linux desktop OS for people with no brains or should people do a little more reading and smarten up?" from alt.linux.mandrake NG
Well, I don't know where you play games at, but around here, we play for fun. Who's crying? Sounds to me like you're crying about my roof driving, certainly not me about how you're playing. That's just the thing, I think most of you take this crap to personal, I mean goodness, getting all worked up over field of views and camping and blah blah blah blah whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. ::shrug:: Whatever makes your life easier to deal with, I guess go for it.
