Voodoo5 track texture problems in NR2002

Bill Anderson showed smeared track textures in the NR2002 demo on a Voodoo5. Others said the retail game fixed the track, but walls and lines still showed odd colors, and Papyrus had said no fix was likely with 3dfx gone. Voodoo owners complained about being told to buy new cards.

I downloaded the Nascar 2002 demo and I am having a problem with the track textures. Here's a couple of screenshots: http://www.worldinter.net/~sir_walleye/NR2002DEMOss003.jpg http://www.worldinter.net/~sir_walleye/NR2002DEMOss006.jpg The track textures look like crap as I look ahead. I am running Windows 98SE, Dx8.1, 800x600x16 in D3D and I am using the last official 3dfx driver (1.04.01). Nascar 4 runs fine. Does anyone else have this problem? I have asked before but didn't really get a satisfactory response. It does it in all resolutions. I hope the full version doesn't do this! Thanks.
Yes, I had exactly the same experience with the demo. But it happen in the retail game, so they must have fixed it. I'm running the exact same OS and video drivers are you. However, overall, the NR2002 graphics do not appear quite as crisp as N4's, at least not on my V5500.. Bill Anderson wrote:

On one hand, Voodoo graphics support is gone, and your 5500 drivers aren't DX8 compliant, and of course papy isn't going to provide 3dfx/glide support in any games anymore. You might be able to try some of the 3rd party drivers that claim to be DX8 and higher compliant that are out there. N2002 use DX8 based stuff, so if your card doesn't support it, you might want to think about a new card. -- Biz "Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and,......things with molecular structures,....and the....." - Ash Bill Anderson <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:xave8.412$[email hidden]... > I downloaded the Nascar 2002 demo and I am having a problem with the track > textures. You said on one hand...but you didn't say anything about the other hand...or is it, on one hand, voodoo graphics support is gone, on the other hand, you should get a new card? Maybe your person was born with only one hand? Obviously from BRH's post, V5s work in the final version of the game, so I don't think Mr. Anderson has anything to worry about. Do you have something against V5s? Jesse
Holly crap..........I guess I'm late. I didn't know the full version was out! How is the online racing? I played the 2002 demo and I actually like N4 better. The cars seem easier to drive in the demo. Even the sounds in the new game sound kinda cheasy to me. Maybe it's just me though. I'm going to buy it anyway. "Do you have something against V5s?" Hehehe. That's what I thought about that post. Why is it if you own a Voodoo card and have a small issue, some people (usually Nvidia card owners) are always suggesting you go buy a new video card? It's seems like people want to eliminate the world of Voodoo cards. I've even had posts where people act like they feel sorry for me because I have a Voodoo 5500. One guy even suggested I get rid of the Voodoo for "a more powerful" Geforce2MX! I laughed my ass off! Most of the time the "new" video card suggested is and Nvidia based. Is it because Nvidia card owners are constantly buying new video cards and updating drivers on a weekly basis? I don't get it. Nvidia has is the most successful brainwashing company of all time. They are the Microsoft that people actually like! Hell Nvidia can come out with a motherboard with integrated video and sound and hardware people are drooling! Integrated video! That sucks and people act like Nforce is the greatest thing that ever happened to hardware! Anyway thanks to EVERYONE who responded. I'll will upgrade one day BIZ but I'll try to squeeze a few more miles outta this puppy. I'm sure you'll have some great suggestions when I do! Bill, the full version is better, however, it still has some video problems with the Voodoo 5. The walls have odd colors and the lines around the inside of the track either white or yellow, have odd coloring to them also. Papy has said that since 3dfx no longer exists, they doubt there will be a fix for the Voodoo cards. Some have gotten good results with 32 bit color and openGL, but they don't work for me either. The weird colors are still there. I switched to a GeForce 4 MX 440, but then had lock-up problems. Swapped that for a GeForce 3 TI 200, and still had lock-ups. Tried several different drivers, same results. I have since put the Voodoo 5 back in, and everything runs, but the colors are messed up again. So, the short answer is, I think the colors are better, but still not perfect. Some tracks seem to be worse than others though. Dennis

I have nothing against Voodoo cards at all except that new games don't come with 3dfx/glide support anymore. I had one and loved it for GPL, N3, etc....But truthfully I find their performance a little poor in d3d and OpenGL compared to newer cards. I would love to be able to play N4/NR2002 with 3dfx/Glide support but I'm a realist and see its probably time to move on. -- Biz "Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and,......things with molecular structures,....and the....." - Ash Jesse Black <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:a5e757$a10$[email hidden]... > You said on one hand...but you didn't say anything about the other hand...or > is it, on one hand, voodoo graphics support is gone, on the other hand, you > should get a new card? I made no new card recommendation, and if you check my other reply you will see I had one and moved on becuase no new 3d games have glide support and the OpenGL and d3d performance is poor compared to newer cards. "Papy has said that since 3dfx no longer exists, they doubt there will be a fix for the Voodoo cards." Well I am seriously considering not buying Nascar 2002 now. I am not going to pay for their game and a new $200 video card just to play it! It will be the first game I haven't bought from Papy since Nascar 1 if I don't buy. I am a little disappointed at Papy. After playing the demo, I am a little disappointed anyway. Other people are still making games that play fine on the Voodoo 5500, I don't see why papy can't. It's either new game and no new hardware or new hardware and no new game here. I think I'll go without either for the time being. I have a feeling some issues will be addressed in a future patch because I'm sure Papy will get sick of the letters. I just can't see why Papy can't make a game that looks better instead of worse than the previous version. GPL still looks great, but N4 looked kinda crappy IMO. Nascar 2002 is a little better but none of them hold a candle to Nascar Heat. Thanks everyone for the help. Bill, I didn't mean to talk you into not buying the game, it is actually very good. The video problems are much improved over the demo, the colors are limited to the walls and the painted lines in the track. I have gotten pretty much used to it, I guess. I wish I had a web page to post a screen shot so you could see for yourself. I'm sure someone will figure out how to fix the video problems eventually. Dennis
I didn't have alot of cash to replace it with either so at the time I bought a GF2 MX400. Since I only have a PIII800, this was plenty of card and it was under a $100. If I knew I was going to be upgrading the machine in the next 4-6 months(which I"m not), I probably would have opted for a GF3 Ti200, but it would have been wasted on this box so why spend the extra money? Don't get me wrong I loved my Voodoo, but it was becoming useless to me as everyone seemed out to obsolete it(and succeeded). -- Biz "Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and,......things with molecular structures,....and the....." - Ash Bill Anderson <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:P9Ae8.3$[email hidden]... > Thanks for your response. It even chases you in the mirro too. I've tried 3 different drivers, including official 3dfx and 2 3rd party efforts and it shows up in all three. There is kinda a flashing on the walls in the replays, as if the textures are being covered\uncovered\covered\and finally uncovered(or revealed if you will)... Somebody has descrip this as a mip mapping error. I'm just about ready to try and track down these 3rd party driver writers and see if we can get them to look at the issue for us. F1 2001 also has some of the same problems. dave henrie
Heck, according to the NR2002 readme, Nvidia cards don't work too well either. -Tim "Bill Anderson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:znAe8.9$[email hidden]... > "Papy has said that since 3dfx no longer exists, they doubt there will bea > fix for the Voodoo cards." > > Well I am seriously considering not buying Nascar 2002 now. Well, considering the Voodoo is going the way of the dodo, I can't really blame them. I have a V5, but the company(3DFX) is dead. Pushing up the Daisy's etc etc etc....:-) I have 3 of them actually :-), bought one new and the others 2nd hand, still running everything I care to play at a decent FPS, although I'll probably replace the one in my main gaming PC with a Radeon 8500 soon, it *is* getting a bit long in the tooth for N2002 Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "Animation isn't the illusion of life; it is life" --Chuck Jones (1912-2002)--
The Voodoo 5500 scales very well with faster processors. I was going to buy a Geforce 3 but now I'm going to keep my Voodoo 5500 and buy an Asus A7V (KT133A chipset so I can keep all my PC133) and an AtlonXP1600+. It costs the same as the video card alone and it will give me a bigger performance boost than keeping my P2B w/Celeron566@850 and putting a GF3 in. I'm sure I'll put in a Radeon 8500 or Geforce 3 someday though. With Nvidias practice of releasing video cards every 6 months, hopefully I can pick a GF3 for dirt cheap sometime soon. I'm more worried about getting my sims looking good with good framerates than running 3DMark and getting 200+fps in a crappy game like Quake III.
