Pffffftttttt hey Geoff, there is no excuse anymore. You are plain, bloody,
lazy and hypocrite for saying such above thing when in fact the real reason
is that your core engine can't synchronise cars together because you twist
the reality of time instead of dropping frames. He won't ever admit it.

Grand Prix 4 reportedly lacks internet multiplayer
ymenard posted a German magazine report that Grand Prix 4 would have no internet multiplayer due to licensing, only split-screen, and mocked Geoff Crammond. Most were scornful, noting GPL had offered 20-car online racing over modems for years, while a few said a good offline experience mattered more. The debate returned to FIA licensing and drifted into whether modern F1 driving aids make the sport and its sims less appealing.
Automated summary.

Boy, that makes me wanna run right out and BUY it...
<Sarcasm off>
I don't get it. You can race any F1 marque against any other F1 marque, but
you can't race against a human on another computer? The cars are obviously
licensed for the game, or they wouldn't be IN there. If Hasbro(or whoever)
writes the MP engine, they obviously hold the license on THAT. What's the
deal? That's just stupid... :(

Is multiplayer the be all and end all of sim racing. Personally I'd be
satisfied to have a high quality racing experience with a really excellent
AI. MP is only good if you're in North America or broadband areas of the

NASCAR 2002 uses 22k for each client. About the same for GPL too. I
raced for years with a 28k modem, no problem at all!

Understood, but as long as an AI isn't playing with the same physics as
you, and none of them are, then MP is the only way to go........same
phsysics for all then.

Yes, it really is now David. It's a complicated issue, be sure of that.
But the thing is, Geoff can't even model 2 guys going head-to-head. The
purest and simple multiplayer you can think of. No talk about options, or
community features, or dedicated server, just a plain human vs. another one.

Tell FIA that. Also, stop buying FIA-licensed games. Then if you're
lucky, they'll care. I would imagine if I were a developer of a
modern F1 sim, it would not include multiplayer support. That is,
assuming that the licensing fees would exceed the amount of extra
revenue generated by including the feature.
Which is why we need a CART sim. Let's go Kaemmer, pull up those
bootstraps and work on your aero models.

I'm east coast USA and have had good GPL racing with fellows
down under in Oz. I've also raced with fellows from Europe.
Unless you are the host/server a dialup account is quite sufficent.
While multiplayer is not all of my gaming, these days I cannot
imagine buying a game w/o it - and haven't in a couple of years.
Why doesn't someone release a game without any real world names / brands /
colours and let us to the mods to make it look how we want. Then they don't
have to worry about licensing
Just my two cents

I can imagine Sierra saying CART or GPL72 wouldn't sell enough, but
why wouldn't they make a sports car sim? There's surely a big market
for that, and with all the code they allready have from GPL and N2002
it wouldn't be that big of a project to make right?

Even more, I have cable at home, but for important races I still use
my 28k8 connection. Cable has 'hickups' sometimes, resulting in warps
or even disco's. 28k8 is as stable as could be and fast enough for
20-player races.
And when you're used to this kind of online racing it's -really-
depressing to see that most racing sims released lately have no or
shitty multiplayer :-/

Well that's quite obivous. Look at what GPL did for the interest in
historical F1. Many people never heard of Clark or the Ring before GPL
(included me) and now people order historical tapes from DukeVideo,
buy Lotus49 scale models and discuss 30-year old races.
Just imagine what a good multiplayer F1 sim would do. Even more people
would get interested in F1, visit races, buy F1 videos and scale
models.. very understandable the FIA only allows shitty 4-player
maximum multiplayer.

I'd think that with a GLOBAL community, you could ALWAYS find someone online...
Strange hours for YOU might be someone else's prime gaming time.

F1 has a worldwide audience approaching a billion over the course of the
season (depending on whose creative math you believe). Somehow I don't
think the sale of the game will make much difference, as 90% of those buying
a modern F1 game buy it *because* it is modern F1 and they already know the
whole scene.

That's positive. Now name me a negative side of good multiplayer in an
F1 sim..

F1GP on my Amiga, and at the time it was an excellent piece of
programming, and I waited eagerly for GP2 to be released. When it came
out (PC only), I was so disappointed because the overall feel of the
game was the same, just a graphical update. Now we have realistic
weather (and a nice reflection idea on the track), but the limits
still remain - only 6 gears, only 16 races a season, etc.
It seems as if he made a bunch of assumptions during coding the first
game which he now cannot go back and change because they have worked
their way into all of his code. Thats why it takes soooo long to make
tiny changes. He needs to kill the source and start again. Trust me, I
do software engineering, this is a common problem.
And I stand by the fact that any game where you can be successful
using the keys is not realistic in any way, and any game where you can
start at the back of the grid in the worst car and be top-6 by the end
of lap 1 is definitely appaling. Lets appeal to Papyrus to take their
GPL engine, stop putting it in Nascar, and place it in a new F1 game,
just so we can A) have a decent F1 game, and B) see just how bad GP3
really is as a simulation.

Yes, but F1 is understandably intent on building up the interest in the United
States. I've got to think that an increased gaming presence here in the U.S.
can only help the FIA meet those aims. I, for one, have had my interest in
autosports greatly re-kindled since I began racing sims many years ago. Sims
are a terrific marketing tool to reach a whole new fan base and any attempts to
limit that are severely short-sighted.

The public might discover that it actually is virtually impossible to pass
in F1 and that the racing itself is quite boring? <G!>
Or scenario two... the public find racing it more interesting than watching
it on the tube :-)

In 2002? YES! Can you even use the word "sim" to refer to a racing
"game" that doesn't have multiplay in 2002? NO!
The Forbes rule :- Sim Factor = Everything else * Multiplay Quality
where Sim Factor = Sim Quality (Max = 100)
Everything Else = All Factors apart from Multiplay (Max = 100)
Multiplay Quality = Obvious (As a %)
Note I - A Multiplay Quality of 0 -> Sim Factor of 0 :))))))))
Note II - To qualify for a Multiplay Quality score you must have a
min of 20 cars online (Slightly negotiable)
Copyright 2002 :))))))))))
Or just anything besides Nascar.

And according to our good friend DGF, we are not good enough simracers

I've actually begun to agree with that. Modern F1 cars are on such a fine
edge, you don't get the 'fudge factor' that you do with GPL or NASCAR.

(my frist in a long time I think) - I must say that the F1 cars (and thus

I hate to break it to you guys, but CART cars are going to have traction

Those aids really helped Lauda when he took out the Jaguars for a test. He
had a hell of a time apparently.

It really bothered me when the commentators (I think it was the British
feed, it was on the Canadian channel TSN) kept harping on how "his car
shouldn't have let him spin, the traction control must have failed or his
tire must have been flat" when Trulli spun in front of Michael. Car
shouldn't have LET him spin?!? Who's driving, anyway?

Huh? I just replied to Ed's post who went on and on about how boring F1
was, in part due to the aids. "You guys" was used generically for all the
CART fans on the newsgroup who are always bashing F1.

The point being that at that part of the turn, with or without traction
control, it should not have been possible to spin in that way, unless
something mechanical went awry. In this case, the theory was that the
traction control stopped working halfway through the corner, meaning a
complete change in character of the cars handling mid turn. Trulli would
likely have no problem taking that turn with or without traction control.
Apparently Webber had no TC for most of the race.

Then please let me reply... (sorry 'bout the delay - oh, and please forgive
the OT-content (Hi Tom!) :-)
Yes, I'm aware that they've allowed traction control in CART - and no - I
dont like it...
IMHO, with all these things they are about to change in CART will screw the
whole thing up...
Why fix it - if it aint broken???
I also predict that this is the beginning of the end for CART.... some
years from now America will be down to one "top notch" open-wheeler class...
My guess is that it will probably feature 3.5 litre atmo-engines, traction
control and dear I say it..... "flat bottoms". It will also race on
types of tracks... ovals, road-courses, streets circuits and Indy - and
then we all know who won.
As for the race in Melbourne.... sure those opening laps were something
different... (did someone steal the red-flag?) ... but once DC had made a
fool of himself and MS found a way passed Monty-boy - the race was over.
How many laps the exictment last this time... 15 perhaps?
Man - I miss Senna.
