I don't know if I have had a more frustrating online gaming experience ever.
There are some serious social retards out there. 59 lap race at the Coca
Cola speedway. I qualify first out of 32 with my newly honed setup. Leading
the first lap and when I get back to the start/finish line there is a car
waiting stopped at the bottom of the track. This car then pulls straight
across the track in front of me. Needless to say myself and the top 7 cars
are all taken out by this idiot, "Trakslut". Nice name. This seems to happen
in 75% of the races. What a waste of time. I guess I'll go back to racing
the AI.

Wreckers ruin public NR2002 online races
Kyle Roberts complained about being intentionally wrecked in public NASCAR Racing 2002 pickup races. Replies advised reporting wreckers to Papyrus, who banned them from the Sierra servers, choosing harder tracks, and above all joining a league or services like OLR. The thread also covered the dominance of restrictor-plate tracks on public servers and a debate over whether self-spinners are nearly as annoying as deliberate wreckers.

I've had a lot of pickup races this past week and a half, and I don't htink
I've come across an intentional wrecker yet. I have though had to deal with
a LARGE number boneheaded drivers. How f***en hard is it to line up behind
the pace car and start cleanly? It's getting old very quickly.

"Is it that we need a nobrainer Linux desktop OS for people with no
brains or should people do a little more reading and smarten up?"
from alt.linux.mandrake NG
s*** happens, that's racing. But there's a few things you might keep in mind
to improve your chances:
- drive on Papyrus' servers and report wreckers to Papy. This is effective -
reported wreckers get banned from WON/ Sierra.com
- try driving on road circuits or the more difficult-to-drive ovals. Easier
tracks are riskier in terms of meeting wreckers.
- try using the well reknowned servers. Some hosts (or bosses) will eject
wreckers or admonish bad drivers. You may not know yet which these servers
are, but you'll learn it in a while.
- try to foresee from the behaviour of a car whether the driver could be a
wrecker, and to prepare yourself. In the race, cars lingering at standstill
or driving slowly are suspicious, just like slower cars changing roadsides
more than once in front of you. Anyone not qualifying or qualifying very
poorly is moderately suspicious - no red alert yet, but at least he should
be watched in the race. Cars doing donuts excessively in practice, speeding
through the pits, shortcutting a lot, driving fast but crashing all the time
or doing other uncommon antics repeatedly can be wreckers (maybe sometimes
spontaneously out of frustration with their own inability). Be twice as
careful when you're the leader, as the leader is the preferred target.
Try to see wreckers as an additional challenge - it's not racing, but it's
there, so deal with it.
But your impression that this happens in 75% of all races is wrong. AAMOF, I
cannot remember when I've seen the last wrecker on an RC, and I've certainly
not yet seen one in N2002.
Therefor, don't give up, stay at it. Online racing can be very satisfying.

Yes, most leagues have the regular scheduled events along with regular
practice periods and pickup races for league members.
The other nice thing of racing in a league is that you get use to the
driving styles and personalities of the people you run with, which can go a
long way in having clean close racing.

I had a problem at Daytona (online). On the start, a guy purposely

Some like to use the excuse that he's an intense, etc. racer. Think it's
safe to say that others are/have been just as intense but don't act like
him, i.e.:
-get lead away from the track in handcuffs as he did in 1998, at a sprint
car, IIRC, race.
-knock a tape recorder from a reporter's hands, and then kick it away as the
reporter reaches for it.
-have to be physically restrained from assualting a top Nascar official(Gary
Nelson). Brilliant career move ace.
For starters<G> One other thing I always get a kick out of is Nascar's
heavy handed pr repair after he's in trouble. EVERY time, the next weekend,
they throw his mug in front of the camera as a race commentator for the
Busch race.
Just my .02 of course :)

Ooh, I don't like that opinion. I ran a race online at Daytona. Everyone else
qualified at 187 or above - I was at 181. Also, I used to purposely drive slow
qual laps to ensure I'd be at the back of the grid. It would keep me out of

Where are all the ranked servers for NR2002? I could usually find a
3-10 race in N4, which tended to eliminate "most" of the BS. So far I
have raced in exactly one SW race that was ranked above 0-10. You
don't even see ranked SS races very often.

Last time I tried racing N2002 on Sierra, there were 2 servers set up
for Watkins Glen, 1 of them with 0 drivers in setup mode, 1 server set
up for Sears Point with a password, and 1 server set up for Pocono
with 2 other drivers who quit before qualifying (I joined hoping to
get at least some decent racing in).
On the other hand, there were at least 30-40 Daytona/Talladega/Coca
Cola servers. There were 14 papy servers set up, 11 at
superspeedways, 1 at Bristol-Night, 1 at Watkins Glen (albeit with 32
cars and in race mode) which quickly changed to a superspeedway race
after it ended, and 1 at Phoenix with 2 drivers entered. None of the
servers ranked.
I wish the Papy loops, at the very least, would use the same format
they did in N4 at the beginning of this year. There was a good chance
that within 10-15 minutes of logging in I could find a decent race.
Rated servers would be nice as well, since you can import your N4
stats.

Ok, some real numbers from just now:
31 plate races
3 Coca Cola races
1 Pocono race
1 Sears Pt race
0 Chicago races

Papy has gone for the option to allow boss mode. If you're lucky and find a
Papy server with 0 drivers logged on, you've got a good chance of becoming
the boss of that server. And then you can select any track you like.
This is btw true for more than just the Papy servers on Sierra in N2002,
although still for less servers than I'd like to see. Several of those
showing 'Setup' for an extended period of time will make you the boss when
you log on, which gives you the power to select a track and start the event.
In general I also agree with you about the ratio of more challenging ovals
to SS or even Coca Cola (argh ;-) is not what I would like it to be. OTOH,
it's not as bad as you describe it. You can frequently find an RC or a
decent oval race, just sometimes you're waiting in vain between.
Although admittedly, since I'm from Europe, I'm on Sierra at times when the
community should be a little more international. I can imagine that for the
serious or less serious American Nascar fans, the big ovals and SS like
Daytona or Talladega are the peak of Nascar racing, just like for Europeans
the Nurburgring or Imola are the 'classic' tracks, so at times when the
visitors to Sierra come mostly from the Americas, maybe the ratio differs
from what I tend to see.
I'd like to add that whenever I see a Martinsville race with 25 or more
drivers in it on the Papy servers, I don't join that either. Or Darlington
with 20+ drivers - those races usually end in carnage without any bad
intentions on the drivers' part :-)
All in all, Sierra is a good fun place for the average player. A serious
racer (or maybe even a serious road circuit racer) though will not find good
races easily. But Sierra wasn't made for that. It's an online facility for
the buyer cross section of N4 and N2002. If we go there, we have to accept
the right of everyone else to use that service and try to enjoy the sim
there the way he wants to enjoy it - seriously, casually, proficiently, less
proficiently... ;-)

pit lane is a pretty good indication someone is a dipstick.
IMHO, anyone who can't be serious during practice, isn't going to be serious
during the race.
They always say "It's only practice, what am I hurting". Man, I HATE that
nonsense.

It IS a fun track.
I've also noticed that all the Papy Races I was in, at least, finally had
fixed setups turned OFF!

Then don't make any mistakes. =)

Outside of testing sessions, you seriously should not be spinning
much. If you are you're either pushing it too hard or need more
practice. No offense, but self-spins can be as annoying as people who
wreck people on purpose.
I have yet to see contact in Nascar 4 or 2002 online that couldn't
have been avoided. It's just a matter of having patience and control
of your car, both of which should be prerequisites for racing online,
imho.

You're kidding, RIGHT? You actually think the two are equal?

Morally? No, not at all.
In terms of annoyance? Not quite, but damn close. I just ran a
league race at Atlanta, 114 laps and no less than 16 cautions.
Someone actually self-spun in front of me, I have no idea how, since
we were using a Papy fixed-fast setup which is tighter than hell. I
would've likely been more entertained if someone had just lost their
wits and went around ramming people for half the race.
Could you imagine how much NASCAR would suck if every 2-5 laps there
was a caution because someone lost control of their car?

Self spinning is usually a result of not practicing enough for the race. In
a league I race in, we have a 2 spin rule, if someone self spins twice in
the same race the rule is they have to park the car and exit the race. If a
self spin causes damage to another car, then they are penalized a point.

Not enough practice? Usually, but not always. I'll agree with Jason that is
can sometimes be caused by pushing too hard. I could probably run laps all day
at a certain speed within my comfort zone. My spins are usually a result of
trying to keep up(or keep ahead) of a driver who's faster... :(
So, in your league, does that rule cause people to just 'circulate' to keep
from spinning?

How loose or tight a setup is or how controllable it is can be very
seriously affected by changing the wheel lock and/or linearity settings.
Compound that with FF wheels which actually diminish the users control and
it is very easy to see self spins with the Fast setup or any other setup.
