okay, I think it's safe now. If you still see this right off, you're just
running too high resolution with your messages maximised, that's all. ;)
Just two things I want to mention at the moment: Whose fault do you think
most of that first turn stuff was - Barrichello or Ralfie? I think it's
more Ralf but both of them were pretty boneheaded...along with a lot of
other drivers but those two mostly...
The other being...did anyone else notice Montoya's tires, specifically, his
right front, not long before Michael got around him finally? (Both of those
passes, Juan around Michael, and Michael back around Juan, were AWESOME....)
It looked to me like he was blistering them a bit, there was a nice,
widening dark line down the middle of his right front. I think he was
cooking them trying to stay ahead of Michael.

2002 Australian Grand Prix start crash and Schumacher's win
The group discussed the 2002 Australian Grand Prix, especially the first-corner crash in which Ralf Schumacher launched over Rubens Barrichello. Opinions split between blaming Barrichello for weaving and Ralf for braking too late, and many debated why the race was not red-flagged. Posters also praised Michael Schumacher's pass on Montoya and Mark Webber's points finish for Minardi.

Ruebens was clearly weaving all over the bloody track. A bit boneheaded in
my opinion, but others have done the same from the pole, including MS,
without anybody making much of a fuss about it.
On the other hand, given that Ruebens was out of line, nobody held a gun to
Ralf's head to make him drive right over Ruebens. It's in a situation like
that that a real pro ought to have kept his cool, not pushed the issue to
idiotic levels, and made him pay for it later. Ralf never so much as got
his nose inside Ruebens to make a claim on "needing room." There may be a
good case that the "red mist" had already got him so bad he was going into
the corner to hot for him to have made it around in the first place.
So, I guess I think Ruebens was out of line, but Ralf was " at fault."
There's an old saying: "The graveyard is full of people who were in the
right."

RB moved to block twice which is against the rules. It was pretty much just
a 'racing incident'. Nothing more. RS really took off like a plane

JPM's pass was simply him having more hp coming down the straightaway.
Nothing special. MS's pass on JPM though was a thing of beauty. Going around
the outside could not have been easy. If F12001 or F1RC are even a little
accurate, then that was a tremendous move.
I'll put it this way. If JPM had made that move on MS, there'd be twenty
posts in this thread by now from Montoya fans (there's a pocket of Montoya
fans here at r.a.s.--probably due to his CART career) raving how it proves
he can beat MS and is the next great F1 driver. :-)
David G Fisher
Watching it live at the end of the straight was unbelieveable. Seeing slowed
down replays of the incident just doesn't do it justice. Bang the
start....bang the crash. 15000 things happening every second and then Ralf
flying through the air............to be on the spot and witness the live
action gives you an appreciation of what these drivers must have to go
through at the start of a race.
So who was to blame?? I'd have to say Barra myself. Most of the guys post
race were describing the one move to protect your line rule to the
interviewers and it seemed they all new it. On replay I thought the Rubens
might have had 2 maybe 3 moves over all. Ralf going up his arse was not
nessesarily the right thing to do.........but how many N4 of GPL'ers have
done the same thing in the same situation.
I've always said that you can only go as fast as the guy infront of you will
let you. By the height and the distance Ralf went after impact...he was
obviously antisipating something that Rubens was meant to do rather than
what he actually did.

Definitely Ralf's fault, if he was going to attempt to get past Reubens, he
should have moved over a lot more to the right of the track, Reubens hardly
moved back across. Ralf simply misjudged his braking, he clobbered the
Ferrari very hard indeed... I thought the car was going to flip for sure.

They had completely different setups, Schuemey was set more for the turns,
whilst Montoya seemed to be set more for speed.... He had a lot less wing on
the car.
It was a great race though, the pile up at the start created lots of
oportunities for the back runners.... Very nice to see Irvine jump from 19th
to 5th by the 2nd corner and it was great to see both Minardi's finish in
the points for the first time in 2 years. And Toyota performed quite well
for their first outing.
One thing is obvious though... Ferrari are still the team to beat, even
though they were using last years car. Jaguar need to be a lot of work to be
competitive too.

No one here can
say if RS braked late or RB braked early but RB was swerving all over the
place and IMO should be given a penalty as stated by the FIA.
The rules state you can only block once and he clearly did more than that
and I'm tired of the Ferarris weaving all over the track at every start. The
same thing is going to happen over and over until the FIA start enforcing
their own rules

What I saw is that Rubens moved to the right to block RS. That is fine, THEN
he moved left to go into the turn. RS was caught looking in his mirrors, and
didn't try to stop AT ALL. He probably didn't even know he hit him until he
started to fly.

How much did Mikey pay Brother Ralf to bunt his only serious competition

Judging by the results of the wreck, I'd say not enough..........Coulthard

flooded with posts on how Schumi is done and JPM is the next king.

I'd say Ralf is to blame. I don't think he would have made the turn

Which, if you think about it, they did...
Half the field was gone, yet they didn't red-flag it to allow them to all
get in backups like they've done in the past. I think they're trying to
send a message - get retarded at the start and you won't be around to be
retarded at the end of the race.
Either way, I think both of them were idiots. I mean, when RB went right to
block...rather than go left like most people would, RS went -further-
right??? How are you going to make that first turn from that far inside???

His transmission did something really odd and that's why he went off course,

yup I agree with Mikkel who agrees with David. JPM passed with
Horsepower, Schumi passed with finesse. A beaut of a move. But also one
the tried several times...JPM might have been an ass and blocked the line.
Fortunately he did not.
I have a question...did the RACE not get a Red flag because the WRONG
Ferrari got hit? Thinking back to Hockenheim last year when MS got nailed
the race was stopped. Ruebens didn't get the same break. Either that or
he's not as race crafty since he pulled off the racing line and MS made sure
his wounded Ferrari stopped directly on the racing line... wink wink nudge

In the post-race interview, JPM said his tires were fine, no blisters that he
saw. MS could pass when he did because his tires came in a little later than
JPM's . . . again per the post-race interviews.
Some great racing for a change.

I guess some other people noticed that line on his right front too. *shrug*
I still think he had to abuse his tires to stay in front of MS, but maybe
not as bad as I thought.

Definitely!!! I like the way this year is shaping up; if BMW continues
advancing like they did last year, by the end of the year, they'll still
have the speed advantage, along with Ferrari-esque roadholding...
Who knows, this could be the start of another great F1 rivalry...I'd love to
see one of these since I was too young to really care enough about F1 to
notice Senna and...well...everyone. ;)

I also thought Trulli's driving was excellent until he lost it. Hard but
fair defence of his position. Schumacher's move was a clever one, using a
modified line to build momentum. I thoroughly enjoyed the race.

I got the impression from JPM's answer that there WERE blisters, people knew
it, but he swept it under the rug. It was sort of a 'wink, wink' expression...

That's more like it. I'm reminded of Nigel Mansell in an interview,
discussing the blow out that cost him the world championship. He said it
would have been easy to park the car and rest his head to the side instead
of getting out. They would have red flagged the race and counted his
position on the previous lap, and he'd have won the DWC.
But he didn't, he lost the championship, and won a lot of respect,
certainly here in England.
MS? I think he'd win at almost any cost. Great driver nontheless.
cheers

Hi Dave,
I knew you'd come up with a conspiracy angle on the non-red flagged start! But
if you go back and look at all the first lap incidents in the last several
years, you'll find that the only thing consistent about the FIA's decisions are
their inconsistency. And more often than not, their decisions have hurt,
rather than helped Michael Schumacher. For this race, they must have felt that
the racing line was clear enough to allow the safety car to safely escort them
through the wreckage. The amount of debris on the track was certainly far less
than at Hockenheim. As usual, the drivers differed on their opinions as to the
call. I thought it was interesting that Ralf thought they made the right call.
As far as it favoring Schumacher, think again. After the incident, he found
himself in fourth, stuck behind a much slower car (Trulli in the Renault) with
two of his main rivals for the championship, Coulthard and Montoya, free and
clear to pull away. A restart would have helped him, not hurt him.
And regarding the start itself, it seemed like the blame should be shared
between Barrichello and Ralf. Reubens was moving all over the place, but given
the speed with which Ralf hit him, Ralf was probably suffering from the red
haze. Awesome start by Ralf, though. Williams must be doing something right
with that launch control.
But enough of the petty stuff ... I thought that was a very exciting race.
The battle between Schumacher and Montoya was superb. Very hard, aggressive
driving, yet no incidents resulted. Montoya is definitely maturing as a driver
and will be a force to be reckoned with. He made a nice pass (taking him in the
straight, while braking hard and deep into the turn). But Schumacher's pass
was a thing of beauty, setting Montoya up for an outside move, then going
inside with better exit speed. The battle with Trulli was also gripping -
Trulli was slamming the door VERY hard on Michael, yet they managed not to
touch. This is what I like about F1 - passes are hard to come by and they
actually mean something. And congrats to Mark Webber getting two points for
Minardi at his F1 debut and his home race. Very cool! Not to mention Toyota
getting a point in their first race (although Salo screwed the pooch in
spinning out and not passing Webber for fifth). Hell, even Irvine and Jaguar
scored some points, and that is one woeful looking team (only managing to
outqualify the pathetic Alex Yoong - not counting Sato in the Jordan who didn't
get a lap in before the rain). What a miserable race for Arrows! After
stalling both cars on the grid, they then make two rules infractions and get
both cars black-flagged.
I haven't read anything that indicates that DC's off behind the safety car was
mechanical - Raikkonen had a similar exursion and admitted that he just blew it
(coming out of the pits). If it was driver error, what a tool!
As far as the upcoming races, you've got to like Ferrari in Malaysia, although
the warm weather could help the Michelin teams. Ferrari have dominated at that
track since its inception. However, I think Williams will be tough to beat in
Brazil. With that very long straight into turn one, their BMW horsepower
should give them an edge.
Looks like an exciting season. Come on all you anti-F1 bigots, stop spouting
all the tired "no passing" cliches and watch some races. You might even enoy
them.

It was fun until Michael got in front, then it was same-old, same-old. I
watched the whole race (which was a first for me) but I read my book during
a lot of it.
It might have been more interesting if more of the fast guys survived lap 1,
but to me it's only a "race" if there's some question about who will win.

"At the start, I managed to find my way through the debris to take the lead.
However my car developed a gearbox down selection problem and when the
safety car pulled in it put itself into neutral which caught me out and I
went off the track," he commented.
"I managed to rejoin but the problem continued and eventually the car jammed
in sixth gear and that was the end of my race. Obviously I'm disappointed as
we would have been in with a good chance today but that is racing and we
must now look forward to Malaysia."

Thanks, David. I hadn't seen that one yet.

Bad luck David...
So, you think he was trying to protect Michelin's honor? Wouldn't be surprising. I
read his expressions differently; but, as my wife will attest, I have the social
skill of a rabid badger.

My news reader assigned your post to the correct thread, as it should
