Nowww none of the 3d programs will run. After changing from Detonator
27.70 to 27.42 none of the programs that were working will even start. I
get an odd error message, that DX8 video adapters are found.
Even after using the detonator destroyer AND putting the 27.70's bACK ON..
I get this error.
I remember somebody else had this problem. Any fixes? Deja/google had a
few threads...those basically said it was a heat issue...case is off, and a

Whenever I upgrade the
drivers, though, I first manually switch over to the Standard VGA display
adapter, then delete all references to NVIDIA in the registry and elsewhere
before rebooting and trying to load the new detonators. Haven't tried the
'destroyer' utility you refer to, but you way want to scrap that and try
manually getting rid of the old drivers. As far as I know, NVIDIA drivers
and related files all start with the letters 'nv', so I just search for
those files (search --> files/folders --> 'nv*') and then delete them more
or less wholesale (then I run Regedit to remove the NVIDIA registry keys).
Good luck,

You still haven't got a new PS, have you? If it's not PS then maybe it is
some Bios setting causing you grief. Set AGP aperature to a different
setting, turn off fast writes. Maybe do a format and clean install of
windows, it could be the probelm is being caused by driver remnnants of
your V5.
Hi Dave,
I'm fishing in the dark now, because I don't know which other drivers worked
on your system before you installed the 27.70 etc., but here's what I'd like
to contribute:
The 27.70 drivers don't work for all GF cards, only for a few. The reason
being, their inf-file doesn't contain entries for the other cards - which is
a mandatory prerequisite for the drivers to find the card and recognize it
as a valid 3d card at all. Therefor, this could account for the message you
get - due to the missing entries in the inf file, your card simply doesn't
get recognized.
Maybe for some reason that inf-file gets re-used (maybe because it has a
newer date, I don't know, or maybe you're going the wrong way about
reinstalling the drivers - newer Windows versions have their secret ways of
keeping old driver installations, and restoring new ones to their original
state - I don't know.
Anyway, the solution would be to look into the archive in which you received
the 27.70 drivers and that of the 27.42 drivers as well, and, in addition to
deleting everything from the Registry as described by someone else in this
thread, go to Windows\inf and delete all inf files having names identical to
those you've found in the two archives from this inf directory and its
subdirectories.
AAMOF, you'd only do this with files found in the 27.70 archive, but just to
be sure...
After you've done that, try a reinstall of the drivers that came with your
card. Preferrably, use the 'setup.exe' on the CD, as that setup may more
radically overwrite everything else and thus restore the original state.
Just a suggestion, sorry if this doesn't work.

Dave,
I think you should scrub ALL nvidia driver files from your system as
outlined in the GeForce FAQ, and reinstall a complete new driver set.

Dave,
If you haven't done so already - as much as I hate to say it - you may need
to reinstall Windows. Format and reinstall, or reinstall to a new
directory.
I had a V5, and picked up one of the GF3 Ti200's when they first came out to
test it. Experimented with some new drivers for it and overclocking the
card, etc. - and when running 3DMark one time, I lost all my textures and
then had all kinds of weird stuff happen after that. The card sometimes
seemed to not even show up as an AGP card, etc. Reinstalling drivers and
removing them didn't do anything. It seemed like I had an old PCI SVGA card
in there as far as the system was concerned. Sometimes 3D worked, sometimes
it didn't. Even 2D was whacked - sometimes it'd boot up in 640x480x16
colors, others at my normal res
So I reinstalled Win 98 from scratch to a new directory, and have since then
never had a problem with various drivers. Using 27.xx something now, was
using the 23.11's and the 21.85's before that - I've switched to other ones
and gone back to these without any hiccups. The GF3 was smoking the V5 in
N4, once it actually "worked". I think some of our reviews from a few
months back stating the V5 was faster in N4 were done on a system that
wasn't fully flushed of the 3dfx stuff, and was not ever kicking the GF3 out
of second gear.
I think something deep in the bowels of Windows really, really dislikes
going from a 3dfx card to an nVidia one. When I installed the GF3, I ran
one of the "remove all voodoo files" utils, set the card to VGA, put in the
GF3, installed the drivers - and it did run ok for a while. While that
should've worked fine, it didn't apparently. When all else has
failed....you may want to give that a shot, painful as it is.
Remember too, just install Windows to a different directory - and you don't
need to format. You do have to reinstall all your programs, but all your
data is right there where you left it.
