I have a new p4 2.0g pc clone system running windows 98se(all I have).
Can't get my force rs installed. Checked ACT Labs page and they say usb
controller and SB 5.1 have to be on different IRQS(both on 11 along with
modem and nic card) anyone know how to change the irqs
Thanks, Dave
You can try to force the issue, but may or may not have any luck doing
this.
First, try to reserve whatever IRQ you want one of the conflicting
devices to use.
On the Device Manager tab, double-click Computer. On the Reserve
Resources tab, click the Interrupt Request (IRQ) option, and then
click Add. In the Value box, click the IRQ you want to reserve.
You'll have to reboot, and Windows will probably go through a lot of
rigamarole trying to reassign IRQs to things that used to use the IRQ
you reserved. It helps if you disable any devices you never use, like
DOS emualation/Legacy mode hardware, if you never play DOS games.
After you are booted, go back into device manager. Look at the
properties of the device you want to assign to the IRQ you reserved,
and try to change its IRQ setting.
I can't remember if you have to unset the "reserve IRQ" setting or
not.
I also don't know how all this interacts with ACPI, APM, or your BIOS
settings.
Sometimes you have to start moving PCI cards to different slots to
make them do what you want. They've been talking PNP for five years
now, and it still doesn't always work right.
Good luck.

Most likely you have ACPI enabled. While MS says it should work, I've
had alot more luck turning it off and specifying IRQ's manually in my
BIOS setup.
Are all your adapter cards on the same IRQ, or just some of them? If
ACPI is not enabled, you might free up the USB IRQ by moving your
cards around.
There's a very specific procedure to remove ACPI from your system
safely (without a format/reinstall). Let me know and I'll see if I
can track down the info.
