After about 15-20 minutes of racing (both AI and multiplay) my screen
freezes for about five seconds. Another 20 minutes or so and it will do it
again. Happens all the time, and makes it bit hard to do well in a race.
It's not the screen saver kicking in. That's the first thing I looked at.
Anyone else have this problem?
Also, I did a fifty lap race tonight, and after there was a big accident and
cars pitted, the frame rate dropped quite a lot as others have experienced.
I remembered someone saying a few days ago that they thought it might be
casused by skid marks, so I had already gone ahead and turned them off. They
can't be the cause.

I just read a post by Tom Pabst where he says his frame rates dropped from
about 40 to 10 after the AI pitted, but I want to say that mine didn't drop
as low as that. Mine went from about 40 to 25.

Try this:
1. in windows - set a fixed permanent size for the swap-file... (i.e set
min and max size to the same... 400 - 500mb should do the trick.
2. in the N2002 Core ini - look for the "Allocated Replay memory setting"
and set it to something like 128-150mb (I dont have N2002 yet so I cannot
help you with the exact phrase (sp?) for this setting - The GPL equivellant
(sp?) however was, "ReplayMemoryOverride = XXXX" (setting in kb.)

suspect the framerate #'s we see when we press f are "AVERAGE" numbers.
Rather than an instant feedback of the current pace of screen updates, it
felt to me like the numbers came back up at a consistant rate.
So rather than report what the fps is after the carnage has cleared, we
may need to wait a few laps and let the average build itself back up. Also
remember, all that smoke is still hanging in the air, drifting with the wind
and that has to impact fps at least a little.

David...
Have you dealt with your Win "swap file" properly (see US Pits for video
card and system settings info on this)? In general terms, this has tended
to stop the screen freezes and jittery FPS in most systems from the early N4
days and up to now. I noticed the other night I was getting some screen
freezes on a new system....and I hadn't reset the swap file settings in
Windows yet....did it.....screen freezes disappeared.

Also I had the drop in framte rate to the point fo almost not drivable after a crash and everyone pitting and it didnt come back and
the graphics went to all crap, so the common thing from everyone that has had the problem is big wreck and/or pitting that's not a
system flaw thats a game flaw IMO.

to run some races with no damage and see if the fps stay normal. If it is

patch.

As Tom say - it's most likely your swap-file thats "resetting"
First:
In Win 98.. (Dont have XP here - so I hope you get the picture from the '98
way of doing it)
Goto "my computer" => properties => preformance => Virtual Memory settings:
Set the size of the swap-file to a fixed size: (i.e set max and min settings
to the same) 4 - 500 mb should do the trick
Secondly:
Open the N2002 core.ini and look for the setting that controls memory useage
for replays... In the N2002 *demo* the sessing is called
"replayMemoryOverride" - just like in GPL and N4
Set this setting to something like 128 - 150 mb. ( I seem to recall you
having 320mb in your PC) - Note that the setting in this file is in Kbytes
so for 128mb enter 128000 etc.
This should cure your problems.

I did exactly as you described but I just had another freeze of about two
seconds about 25 laps into a race. I set it to 128000 in the core.ini, and
my swap file was already set to 500 both min and max.

Does it allow you to race longer before the freeze occur?
Other than the memory/swap-file issue - I must say I cannot think of much
else.. I should point pout that I dont not have XP nor N2002 though (yet).

How many Megs is your video card? What resolution are you running? Which
renderer?
If your card is less that 64MB or if you are using OpenGL, you will run into
texture thrashing problems.. Try setting it to 800 x 600, D3D as an
experiment and use the latest official drivers from your card manufacturer.
I'll bet the problem disappears. NR2002 is a huge video memory hog.

Just did a complete reinstall of the game and on lap 23 the screen froze for
a few seconds again.
