I just bought F1 2001 recently , for the expressed purpose of installing the much raved about Madfactory GT car patch. I tried the game out and was very pleasantly shocked to find the very best force-feedback wheel effects that I have ever experienced in a sim. Prior to this GPL was the best by far, but this game is as good or better in FF. I can feel virtually every tire motion, including the influence of road banking. This is extremely impressive for a game that the developers did not even provide FF for without the patch. I would have expected an afterthought level of FF implementation from EA. This game is awesome at any price, and an absolute steal for $19.99. I already had GP3, and really like it, not being a Geoff Crammond hater. However, this game is better in all but a few respects to GP3. Glad I heard about it here, thats why I keep listening to all of the diverse opinions in this group, year after year. Once you cut through some of the biases here, and kind of get a consensus of opinion, I have rarely made a bad software purchase.
It is truly awesome. After you get used to it go get the Simon Phillips telemetry program and get your F1Rank going. GTModRank too! Yup, I agree, it's probably is the best F1 sim so far. I also just recently bought it for the GTMod and am liking the F1 part more and more. It feels good, great FF and the sounds are great too (I like the sideways tire grip sounds, you can hear them struggling to hold on to the road). The only thing I'm a bit disappointed with the driving model is how much you can cut corners and touch grass without repercussions (tire traction doesn't seem to be affected once you're back on pavement). But then again, I'm not as frustrated by the sim being too unforgiving, so I won't complain too loud. I also wish the replay system was better, I really don't like the existing one, it really feels like the in-game graphics are fantastic but that the replay graphics really lack something (probably because it's windowed). And one last thing: I wish the clutch would release when you press the assigned clutch button even when clutch assist is on. I don't have a clutch pedal, so I like clutch assist, but sometimes it would be handy to go into neutral (clutch) just for a second or so to avoid a slip-up. For GTMod, I've turned off clutch assist and am using a button on my wheel for clutch, I find it that important. I just bought it for the GTmod too, but so far the mod has sucked on my machine ( amd 1700 xp, gf2ti, 256 ddr ). Can't get the framerates up even with the fixes I have read in here. It might be good once I get decent framerates out of it, if I can tear myself away from f1 long enough to try. Best $20 I ever spent.
