I've had a few ideas for mods and was wondering if anyone was working on
them or wanted to have a go... I'm useless at creating stuff like that.
I'd like to see a Touring Car mod.. I know we have the GT2 mode, but I'd
rather see something like the Toca cars (I know Codemasters are releasing a
new TC game) as they are more likely to be cars I'd drive myself... I can't
afford a Porsche or Ferrari, but I can afford a Ford (I already have 2 of
them) or a Vauxhall/Opel/GM, or a Renault, Peugeot, Audi and so forth.
What I'd really like to see is an Aussie TC mod... ya know the V8 ones. I've
been watching highlights on Sky of them, and the races really remind me of
how UK touring cars used to be (When it was actually good), gritty, close
and lots of bumping and pushing and crashing.
And of course I'd love to see all these cars racing around Laguna Seca...
I've yet to play a decent version of this track... Gran Turismo 2 on the PSX
did a pretty good version.... but most games totally ignore the fact that
the chicane round the back drops down a hell of a lot and is not A FLAT
SECTION OF TRACK.... I ask you.. some games have made this section flat...
completely flat... it's not fucking flat you gimps. Sorry for the rant, but
it get's my back up.. LS is one of my fave tracks... and I want to race F1
or Touring cars around it. :o)

Flame warMod wishes for F1 2001 spark console-versus-PC spat
Heckler asked for touring-car, V8 and other mods for EA's F1 2001, and others pointed to existing DTM and Aussie V8 projects and to NASCAR Heat mods. When he admitted not knowing what ICR2 was and defended console racers, several regulars mocked him, and the exchange turned into name-calling with Edward C. Side topics included rumoured F1 licensing costs that limit online play and EA reversing a plan to shut down Need for Speed Porsche servers.

Well, there are 2 V8 touring car games coming soon from EA & Codemasters
respectively. I think that they may only be available in Australia but you
might be able to get them off the 'net. Us Aussies have known the joy of
this racing series for many years - it's great to see it getting coverage on
the overseas cable channels. I went and saw them live at the Gold Coast
IndyCar race a couple of years ago. I was expecting them to seem a bit crap
after watching the IndyCars but I walked away just as impressed as I was
with the open-wheelers. When they had the support race at the Melbourne
F1GP this year, apparently most of the F1 engineers came out of their pits
to watch them - they really are that impressive.

Heat has alterable physics as well so you won't be dragging 2.5 ton WC car
around. They have just released a beta of the Aussie V8 cars, they already
have a DTM mod,,,although it doesn't have a tidy installer yet, and there is
a BTCC paint patch for DTM, we are hoping the BTCC guys will finish the mod
with front wheel drive & 2.0 litre cars.
Mods are allllll over these days.

I'm not sure what ICR2 is. The Laguna Seca track in Newman Hauus Racing for
the PSX wasn't so bad.

ICR2 stands for Indy Car Racing 2 and shortly after it's release it featured
a 3d patch that enabled owners of Rendition Verite` 3d cards to run about
half the tracks in 3d. Frame rate jumps were almost 100% faster, full
screen edge anti Aliasing...Cleanest looking sim until the V5 showed up.
Here endeth the lesson.

< Snip >
Rumor has it that a sim developer must pay Bernie E.
$10 million for a license to use F1 drivers and cars in
a sim, and another $5 million for rights to have fully
implemented on-line play.
F1 sims have on-line play, but users tell us that only
about 4 drivers can race on-line at a time. I'm not sure
what happens when this limit is pushed, but it must be
something bad.
I started playing on-line last December, NFS/Porsche.
There is NOTHING like racing against real human beings.
I don't care how good a sim's AI might be, I want to
compete with real people from around the world.
I purchased NASCAR Heat, which allows many (20+?)
drivers to compete on-line, for their DTM (Mercedes,
Opals and Alfas on road courses) mod. But I can't make
their racing schedule. My Friday and Saturday nights
are for my friends to come over and take turns with
NFS/Porsche sprints. So I can't compete in this series
which runs Friday nights. I hope they add a mid-week,
or mid-day weekend (U.S. PST) session.
I purchased F1-2001 yesterday, and will install it
this week sometime.
What we have is F1-2001 with the best physics, and
non-F1 titles with the best competition.
It's a tough call, but I'm more interested in mods
for sims with good on-line play.
Wouldn't it be better to put efforts into modifying
non-F1 titles like NASCAR heat or NASCAR 2002?

Hey I've been playing computer games since the late 70's. I've owned most
kinds of computers and consoles. Just because someone doesn't recognise an
acronym doesn't make them some kind of noob.
I've probably seen or played most of the mainstream racing games in the
last 20 years, but you also have to remember that here in the UK we don't
get a lot of coverage of Indy Cart games, we tend to find driving around an
oval boring and uninteresting. :O
An example of how much I play games would be to explain that when I sold my
PSX last summer I had over 90 games, 20 memory cards, 6 dual shock pads,
recoil gun, wheel and a ton of other accessories. For my PC I've got in the
region of 200 games, FF Joysticks, Rumble Pad and a ton of other
accessories.
I may be newish to this group, but I've been playing racing games on
computers for over 20 years... Maybe I've got more experience with consoles,
but until recently consoles had the edge when it came to racing games.... I
played most of my racing games on consoles with a huge TV screen and full
home theatre sound, and left the PC for strategy, FPS and so on... but with
the increasing development of graphics cards and CPU's I now have a computer
that can run these racing games as good as or better than a console.
I sucked big time at GP2, at present I suck at f1 2001, but I'm getting
better.
Now please be a little more tolerant of you elders and betters across the
pond. :o)

Ah well there you have it, I was stuck with an old 486 with no 3D card until
98, it was fine for most of the games I played on the PC.
Besides, it's CART racing.. we like proper racing in the UK... none of this
going around a short oval track nonsense. :o)

Consoles were much more accesible and much cheaper than a PC, factor in the
cost of the 3D card in the early days.. and you see why consoles had the
edge. I absoloutely loved F1 on the PSX in 96, sure it had bugs and the AI
needed some workt... but it was a very good game, probably one of the ground
breaking titles of it's day, and it included dolby surround sound... how
many PC games were doing that back then?

Since the 70's, huh, Pong doesn't count for much here. Though I did play
Asteroids and Backgammon on my TRS80 model 1, loaded them off cassette
tape...moved up to a home built Heathkit 8088 in '82, it actually had (2)
5" floppy drives and whopping 20mb HD.

Yeah, anything other than follow the leader scares you guys for sure.
Mainstream racing games for 20 years, hmmm the best one has only been out
about 10. GPL even less than that.

That proves it, a console gamer. I see why you would think you have driven

Recently!?, consoles haven't had an edge on computers for 'sim' racing since
NASCAR Racing 1 came out in the early 90's. You weren't too hardcore,
playing your console games on a TV with a d-pad that rumbled a little. Try a
sim on a computer with a wheel controller.

I don't agree with you.. you said 'untill recently consoles had the
better racing games'.. GPL is about 3.5 years old and I don't think
anything on any console came close to it.
Those GT games might have great looks and sounds, after 10 minutes
they allready became boring to me (haven't played GT3 though, but from
what I hear from friends it's a good looking need for speed clone, not
a sim).
And I don't like playing racing games with those gamepads :-/
But you sold GPL a long time ago I read in another post so we just
have a different taste in racing games/sims I guess..
Yes, well, makes me laugh everytime when I see another CART post from
him :) I was once digging through some readers mail on
www.gamesdomain.com, the topic was about some cart game, and I ROFL'd
my ass off when I saw a CART mail from TRUSRS :))

Crappy 56k modem and even crappier connection. I'm upgrading to ADSL as soon
as I can, but I'm near the limit of distance from the exchange and NT"HELL"
have been lying about upgrading my area so we can get cable
phones/modems/digital for the last 4 years.
It makes trying to play any game online hard work.... and the only time I
can get a decent enough ping to make it worthwhile is when a server is close
to me or it's 4 am and hardly anyone is using the ISP.

Sitting in my cupboard is an old Amstrad 1640 complete and working, 2
Commodore Amigas with printers, tons of games, memory upgrades and an Atari
ST 1040 with printer, scanner, ton of games and monitor.

That proves it, a snob. PC sims are not the be all and end all of racing
games. I'm open to all types of racing.. I even bought Nascar 4, tried it
and took it back for something better.

Have done, and I said I was used to an analogue pad so I'm gonna prefer
something that I can pick up and use straight away.... I don't have a
broadband connection, so online gaming is hard enough, having a group of
friends round and linking up a PSX for some F1 or Wipeout fun or throwing a
couple of multitaps in and having 8 players at football (The proper game not
the rugby wannabe played in the US), or Hockey is far more fun than sitting
in front of my computer struggling to keep a car on a track with a huge ping
and packet loss.... If I get knocked of the track I can turn around and see
the expression on his face as I insult him. :o)
As for being hardcore, you should have seen me party.. I may not be hardcore
in gaming terms.. but I rock in real life. :oP

I'm not sure GPL would have been a great deal of fun to me 3.5 years ago on
a cyrix200mx 16mb with 1mb SVGA graphics, but TOCA on the playstation was
enormous fun, and a better sim than GPL at the time (to me, because of the
PC available to me).
As for GT/GT2 etc, I have both of these on PSX, and I can say that while
you can drive it like an arcade game, in that it will catch your slides to
a certain extent, etc, if you drive it "properly" it behaves properly. It
only allows the player to continue round the track when, eg, a GPL player
would be picking his teeth out of the armco, but to get the best lap times
in GT2, you had to set the car up just right, and drive it *properly*. I
used to enter the offline races at www.granturismo.com, and in every case
the best drivers were the ones that used proper car control. The rest of
us could get round a lap, and beat the AI, by driving it like ridge racer,
but it still behaved like a proper sim up to the point you make a mistake
and the safety net appeared.
Complaining that driving a racing sim on a console requires the use of a
gamepad is like saying I don't like GPL because using a keyboard is no fun
at all. Wheels don't come with consoles, nor do they come with PCs last I
looked.
GT2 also offered "simulation" tyres, which provided an experience which
would be comparable to driving N4 in simulation as opposed to arcade in
that it removed the forgiving high grip tyre model.
In my opinion, GT2 is a sim. It may not be as good as some other software,
but it's still a sim.

Two reasons:
1) Nascar Heat is not, never was, and never will be, available to buy in
the UK without going through some right messing about with online/mail
order stores. Then paying the equivalent of $50 US imported, or $45 direct
for a game that retails for less than $10 US and it's not a glowing
proposition. Heckler is a brit, so that argument would count for him also I
guess.
2) Nascar 2002, like all other papyrus games, is utterly locked, encrypted
and barred from any kind of modification. It's only through sheer
determination that the addons for GPL, and lately N4 have surfaced. Papy
have actively made it difficult to produce modifications for any of their
games, as a matter of policy.
EA, with their F1 2001 software, have a relatively open platform for
modifiers to exploit.
The argument for Heat is a good one, but it's, frankly, rarer than rocking
horse shite in the UK. Only someone seriously determined to play the mods
would fork out $50 for it to be shipped from the US.
cheers

My PC is a Solaris (Unix) computer right now, and will
probably be setup with a Matrox G400 card 'till this weekend.
So I can't install F1-2001 until I swap in my old V5/5500.
I did look in the F1-2001 manual's multi-player section
and didn't see one important option, which I hope is
available.
That option is "Collision". This is an option that makes
online racing with a slow connection doable.
Look, I'm not here to say NFS/Porsche is a great sim with
fantastic physics, but it aint crap either. This is the only
NFS game I own, but NFS/P is supposed to have far nicer
physics than other titles in the series.
With NFS/P, cars with slow ping times look jerky to other
drivers, and you don't really know where they are so close
maneuvering, like passing, becomes dangerous. Turning off
collision is a solution that allows all to have a good time.
Each driver sees the track in the smooth presentation
their computer can deliver, and other cars, with slow updates,
are jerky. But with collision off, just drive through them.
This is a major compromise, the person who starts a game
is the "host", and dictates the collision setting. Once you
get used to it the racing is still great fun, but you can
drive through other cars.
How many posts come from Papy NASCAR drivers complaining
about jerks who collide with everyone and screw up the fun?
Turning off collision in NFS/P keeps these jerks from
bothering others.
I'd rather race F1 cars, but NFS/P has to be pretty cheap
if it's available at all, in fact EA had a copy for $20.00
(USD), and it had three other driving games in the box.
On-line racing is so much fun, if collision off isn't an
option in F1-2001, grab a copy of NFS/P, or borrow a copy
from a friend to test, and get on-line with your slow
conneciton.

Perhaps that Ausi V8 sim will be the ticket. F1-2001 physics
without the F1 on-line limitation.
I saw something about that a month or two ago. Is it an EA
game? Or is it an F1/2001 mod like the GT mod?
I had the impression it would be an EA release.
Anybody know a release date?

I have a copy of NFS:P and it is a very nice game. But I checked in with the
NFS newsgroup a while back and saw reports of EA shutting down the servers
for good back in Jan, some people were hoping EA would release the code for
the online so they could set-up servers but I don't think they ever did...
They just want people to buy a game they can't even play offline and then
pay again to play.

You tell him TRUSRS85!! CART is the truest form of racing in existence
as far as I'm concerned. Purpose built single seat race cars capable of
over 200 mph on ovals, an international selection of tracks including
both road courses and ovals, and plenty of passing and lead changes both
on the course and in the pits. Where else can you find all of that?

Ya know most of the people here have been helpful and friendly. but I guess
I forgot every newsgroup has it's resident dumbass.
I mean oh deary me.. I didn't recognise an acronym, what a crime.... I
didn't remember a game that had virtually no impact on this side of the
world.
I really hate stereotypes, but you are a typical example of how Americans
are perceived elsewhere.... Ignorant, arrogant and so insular... You know
nothing of the world outside your own country. You're a snob of the most
pathetic kind.... you're a snob about computer games, how pathetic is
that... So I've played a lot of arcade type racers.. whoopeee... and I had a
lot of fun doing it, I don't care if a game is Arcade or Simulation, I care
if it's enjoyable, fun, if it's neither of those then it get's traded on,
returned to the store, hell I've even destroyed a couple they've been so bad
(Andreti racing for example was covered in lighter fluid and burnt).
The main difference between us though, is that I'm open minded, I'll try
both things.. Sure you may have a preference for Sims over arcade... but you
have a real shitty attitude towards people who don't.
And so much for plonking me eh.... I guess that makes you a liar as well.

Hahaha....oh yes the great master plan, "I know, I'll go to a newsgroup

understandable though why you didn't get it) and proclaim that console
arcade racers are better than PC race simulators (in so many words), then

Sigh.. could you be any more stupid? Perhaps you would like to provide the
proof of where I said "console arcade racers are better than PC race
simulators"
Perhaps you mean this statement?
"Maybe I've got more experience with consoles,
but until recently consoles had the edge when it came to racing games.... I
played most of my racing games on consoles with a huge TV screen and full
home theatre sound, and left the PC for strategy, FPS and so on... but with
the increasing development of graphics cards and CPU's I now have a computer
that can run these racing games as good as or better than a console."
Or this one.
"Have done, and I said I was used to an analogue pad so I'm gonna prefer
something that I can pick up and use straight away....
Perhaps it was this one
"That proves it, a snob. PC sims are not the be all and end all of racing
games. I'm open to all types of racing.. I even bought Nascar 4, tried it
and took it back for something better."
You've obviously taken something I've said, misinterpreted it and then
jumped straight in not countering anything, not offering anything
constructive... just dive in and insult someone (Check your first post to
this thread)... and then you seem surprised when they react... when they
bait you in such an obvious way... when everyone else appears to have the
common sense to steer clear of the point.
The most ironic thing of all, is that this thread was actually started by
me, asking about and offering ideas for mods for a racing SIMULATOR... so
obviously I only like console arcade racers..... NOT!!!

give you a dollar you could buy one.

But I was just about to come down to your idiot level so you could beat me
with all that experience.
