If you enjoy Rally racing (including Hill Climb and Ice/Snow racing) then you
will love this game. The graphics are outstanding and the physics are above
average for a console racer. The handling and gameplay are exceptional if you
happen to have the MC2 wheel from MadCatz.
One of the coolest features if having your spotter calling out the upcoming
turns and potential hazards. It is so accurate that if you could get the timing
down you could almost drive with your eyes shut.

RalliSport Challenge on Xbox praised, sparking console debate
Sinjin praised RalliSport Challenge on the Xbox for its graphics, hill climbs and accurate co-driver calls. Others found it twitchy or arcade-like and missed a cockpit view, and the thread widened into arguments about Halo, the Xbox controller and Xbox versus PS2 versus GameCube. It ended with some heated but mostly civil exchanges about console loyalties.

I thought the navigator was terrible ! He gets so far in front or behind in his corner
calling, depending on how well, or badly you are driving. It's nearly unplayable with a
normal controller(very twitchy), and the graphics are "decent" for a modern console. X-Box
has not left me too impressed so far with the games I've seen.. Halo, Rallisport and
Project Gotham(a bit of a mess). And, Amped, which is boredom defined !
Nothing outstanding going on here.

No PC rally game got that right so far.

My navigator was dead on listing the next 2-3 "terrain features" in advance.
The rate of his narration also seemed dependent on my current speed so if I was
going faster he would give me more info. It was also amazingly ACCURATE info
like "don't cut the turn - loose gravel on the inside" or "medium left - caution
- rocks on the outside" or my favorite "caution - exposure" which has kept me
from plummeting off the side of a mountain on more than one occasion.
The verbal instructions are also accompanied by icons that drop down from the
top but I almost tune these out now and concentrate on mainting "the line". I
also like the fact that you score for each round is also affected by your car
damage - a good incentive for driving clean!
Control is dead on with either the standard controller or the MC2 wheel. I had
to play around with the calibration to get the wheel to perform as tight as the
controller but in the end it was worth it. I get much more accurate gas and
braking with the full range of the pedals vs. the left/right triggers on a
gamepad.

Rallisport gives a nice sensation of speed, but the controller just doesn't cut it.
Compare the control on something like GT3 and you can see how wrong it is.
Halo has some great weapons effects, but the levels we were playing were very bland, to
say the least. OT question here. Why are the aliens so bloody stupid that they make their
floors out of glass ? It's fun shooting the panels and watching them drop through though.
But, overall, the game is no match for the greatest console FPS ever, and that was
Goldeneye.

Firstly Halo is not a proper FPS, it's a combination of first and third
person perspectives, it should be compared more to Tomb Raider than the
Unreal or Quake series of games. After playing it for a few hours I was
bored rigid, same with amped, it looks good, but the control isn't exactly
intutative, they could certainly learn something from Neversoft who did the
Tony Hawks series... and Matt Hoffman I think.
So far I have yet to be impressed with any game I've played on the Xbox, but
I also felt the same with the PS2, give it 6-12 months and maybe we'll start
seeing something decent. The Xbox controller is just dreadfull, far inferior
to the PS2 ones... perhaps when the release the slightly smaller jap
versions over here I'll be happier with them, but they are far too big and
cumbersome.

Probably because the aliens you encounter didn't build Halo. Who built
Halo? That's sort of the point of the game.

Halo is not a proper FPS. By that I assume that it has a story and a plot,
it's not as bland and utterly boring as something Id releases every other
year or so. I can see how you compare it to Tomb Raider because (a) it
doesn't center around a big breasted woman and (b) apart from driving a few
vehicles there are no third person views at all.

I agree. Would be even better on a PC (with mouselook controls) but it
is the best action FPS ever. Knocked my all-time favs of Half-Life and
Jedi Knight off the top spot. (I have high hopes for Jedi Knight 2
which should be in the stores within 2 weeks!).

Obiwan does suck horribly. Most XBox games are average, port-ware.
Overall the system isn't worth buying yet IMO (I won mine, woohoo!).

True, they've nailed the car-sliding control better than any previous
rally game IMO, even when just using the hand-held XBox controller.

Incorrect. In the vehicle-control mode a 3rd-person view is of course
provided (with a particularly innovative and effective control scheme
I must say). But on-foot it's FPS all the way. The controls even mimic
mouselook.

Are you <ahem> fairly young? Because every adult male I know who has
tried it feels very comfortable with the Xbox controller. Maybe you
just have small hands....
It's sweat. The hill climb sections are the icing on this cake. Replays
are incredible on Hill climb, the sense of elevation change is unseen in any
game I've ever played. The damage model is a bit sucky on her though, oh
well, more of a game then a sim.
However, I've NEVER seen grass drawn so nice. That GF3+ card really shines
on the box.
PGR is also another good game for the Xbox, really gets your heart racing.
TestDrive looks to have potential and I hear F1-2002 is looking good as
well.
Best gaming move I've made in a while (buying an Xbox that is).

I agree. Rallisport Challenge (bar-none) is simply the best Rally racing
game I've ever tried (considering I've played Rally Cross, Test Drive
V-Rally, WRC, Sega Rally and Colin McRae 2).
My only complaint is that they don't allow you to restart a race in a
series, which some series are really long. Combine that with AI that loves
to "take you out" and it makes completing the game VERY difficult.
Multiplayer (2-4 players) is unmatched fun also!
Incredible game for sure.

They were both brilliant... I bought my N64 just because of Goldeneye.... it
was more than 6 months before I bought another game... I had my PSX for the
rest and the N64 just for that... we had so much fun with multiplayer. I'd
just picked up a 2nd hand copy of Perfect Dark and didn't get much of a
chance to play it before I sold both my consoles to buy something else.

I have to agree. The hill climb portions fo the game are the best. The
elevation changes, hairpins, and driving on the edge of cliffs is just
great. The sense of speed in RSC is awesome. My only real complaints are the
lack of a cockpit mode and the split screen is not side by side in 2 player
mode. Overall a great arcade rally racer.

Too many people with inadequacy problems. ;o) I have had a number of
friends over to play on the Xbox, and also taken it to a couple of
parties. These are mostly the same guys, but altogether I think I have
had 8 or so adult males in addition to myself try it, and they all liked
the Xbox controllers. I know, because I asked them. I asked them,
because as you know the size of the controllers has been one of the
primary complaints since the Xbox first came out. They all said they
like the bigger controller because their hands don't get cramped like
they do on smaller ones. So yeah I guess I am making an assumption
based on that, I am assuming that it has primarily been teenagers who
are complaining that the controllers are too big. All I know is they
feel fine to me and my friends.
I recently decided to get one of the new consoles because A) they are,
for the first time, better than my PC, B) I don't have the funds to
upgrade my PC, and C) the only PC game I want in the next 12 months is
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.
It is so difficult to get an unbiased opinion on these consoles,
because everybody who has them doesn't want to admit if it has any
flaws. Especially Xbox owners. In an ironic twist, Xbox owners won't
admit that the Xbox has any flaws, because they are trying to reassure
themselves that they bought the right machine. It is exactly what
Linux users do all the time.
But I don't care. I just wanted the best console. Remember these
things:
Nintendo have made their name developing quality gaming systems
Sony have made their name making quality electronics
Microsoft have made their name making shaky Operating Systems
Xbox has more Mhz on the CPU, but some instructions take 8 times
longer than others. Apparently, comparing a PS2 to an Xbox in speed,
the PS2 would be the equivalent of a 1Ghz xbox. And that is an
independent study. But I don't care. What it comes down to is this:
Xbox = Halo
PS2 = GT3, Metal Gear Solid 2
GC = The usual suspects (anything with Mario), and Super Monkey Ball
These are the killer games on those systems. So what I did is compared
these games to see which ones were phenomenal, and which were merely
good.
The results? Halo was boring, not especially graphically intense, and
crashed.
GT3 is probably the best looking game ever, and takes about a year to
complete.
MGS2 is heavily storyline driven, quite short, but extremely sweet.
The GC games that I have played are the best though, playable as hell,
looking great, sounding perfect etc.
So, what did I get? A PS2. Why? PS2 can play quality games, DVDs
straight out of the box, is ultra smooth gameplay at 60fps, properly
motion blurred to make it look nicer on a TV, and that blue light is
amazing.
The GC lost out because, although it is the best console, there is no
real variation in the games, mostly they are cartoony, Mario style.
And you have to run your games past Nintendo before you can release
them. The PS2 may get a load of shite games, but, like the PC, allows
people to break the mould.
The Xbox was way behind because it was not properly motion blurred
(which makes the animation on screen very slightly jerky - just about
perceptible but very annoying), it crashed, and for the price I could
upgrade my PC to a 2Ghz monster. I don't care about the controller
size (although it did give me hand cramps playing Halo), but the
positioning. Moving your thumb all the way up from the right analog,
to the buttons took some time, and I kept pressing those four boiled
sweet buttons all at the same time. I could never get fully immersed
in any game I tried because there was this level of 'playing the
machine' rather than 'playing the game'. On the PS2 and GC, all the
control systems and stuff just disappear, and you can get fully
immersed in whatever game you are playing.
And now Sony are releasing the development kit. Based on Linux, it
comes with a USB keyboard and mouse, all the utils to make your own
games, a 40Gb Hard Drive and the Broadband internet adapter. I don't
know the UK price, but converting from euros makes it 152. Bargain.
Whichever console you get, you are going to be pleased. Just more so
with a PS2 or a GC. And then it just comes down to the games. The GC
hardware is better, but the PS2 games are better and more diverse.
That's my input into this argument. It is about as unbiased as you can
get.
"Nick" <[email hidden]> wrote in message

Xbox owners are just as likely to admit to flaws in their system as PS2 and
Gamecube owners. I own both the PS2 and Xbox and both have their flaws.
> But I don't care. I just wanted the best console.
There is no "best" console. There are three choices and all three choices
are good choices. There is very little in this world that can be described
as "best". This does not include videogame consoles, motherboards, houses
and cars.
> The results? Halo was boring, not especially graphically intense, and
> crashed.
Halo may be boring, I loved it, but it's one of the better looking games
released on a console. I don't understand the "graphically intense"
comment.
> GT3 is probably the best looking game ever, and takes about a year to
> complete.
GT3 is not the best looking game ever. It suffers from a trememdous amount
of graphical flaws, such as flicker and aliasing. Yes it may take about a
year to complete, but you'll have done everything and seen everything within
in a month. You simply race different cars on the same tracks in the same
series over and over again. The cars get faster, nothing else changes. By
the way, when I say "race" different cars I use that term loosely. You
don't race anything in GT3. You get run over, banged into, pushed out the
way, but you don't actually race.
> MGS2 is heavily storyline driven, quite short, but extremely sweet.
And extremely text oriented. How much do you want to read during a game?
Want a better game, try Ico. Quite short, extremely short and none of that
poor "read, read, explore, fight boss, read, explore, read, read, fight
boss, read" gameplay that MGS is known for.

The PS2 does not do motion blur all that well. The dreamcast was the king
of the hill in that category, but why is motion blur a "decision" maker on a
console? It's rarely used in any games, and then only briefly. The blue
light is nice, now that's a sellng point. 60fps... that's a software issue
not a console issue. Yes the PS2 plays DVD's out of the box, but you need
to buy a memory card to save your games. How much is that memory card? $35.
Want to save games on the Xbox, that's free. Want to watch DVD's? That's
$30. Looks like a wash to me.
> The GC lost out because, although it is the best console, there is no

Want to release a game for the PS2 or Xbox? Guess what, you need to run
your games by Sony and Microsoft. The nintendo games are carbon copy "Mario
style". Well there hasn't been a Mario game released for the GC and from
what I've seen the selection of games is quite diverse. They do appeal to a
younger audience though. I don't own a GC but I don't see anything wrong
with it. I don't see why a developer can't break the "mould" with it. Much
like has been accomplished already with Pikmin.
Again with the motion blur. What excatly does that mean? Yes you could
upgrade your PC to 2ghz for the price of an Xbox. But you can you also buy
a hard drive, a GF3, and a network card for the same price? The Xbox is not

Ummm, you know you can download Linux for free right? I assume you already
have a keboard and mouse. How many games are you writing at the moment?
Why would this change but spending yet more money for this kit to use with
the PS2?

Now that's an intelligent statement. You're going to be "more" pleased with
a PS2 or GC. Who wouldn't want to be more pleased?

Don't be an ass. I delayed purchasing a new console for many years,
because the hardware just wasn't good enough. The XBox was the first
console in many years that I thought was worth the purchase price. I
did not just buy it by accident and then try to justify it, I have been
waiting for it for a long time.
> The results? Halo was boring, not especially graphically intense, and

You are entitled to your optinion, but I certainly disagree. I have
played through the first 7 levels of Halo and I think it is phenomenal.
And I have never seen it crash.
> ... properly motion blurred to make it look nicer on a TV...
Never cared for that effect or FSAA for that matter. Just makes things
look out of focus to me. And again, I am not saying that to justify my
purchase, these are things I thought about before making the purchase.
Just like you, I studied the available systems first and then decided
what to buy.
> The Xbox was way behind because it was not properly motion blurred

I'll provisionally give you that one. There are a couple of games that
pushed the frame rate a little too hard. For the most part however the
animation is fine, it's just some developers that went a little too far.
> it crashed, and for the price I could

I don't want to go off on a tangent here, but I still don't think it is
valid to compare a console to a PC. Sure they both play games, but that
is the only thing they have in common, at least in terms of usage.

I still like the size of the controller, but I agree the button layout
is not good.

Hasn't been my experience at all.

Very cool.

PS2 certainly has better variety of games today, but a lot of developers
are moving to XBox. And when I look at games back-to-back that have
both an XBox version and a PS2 version, such as Max Payne, the XBox
version looks better to me.

Hardly. You appear to be guilty of doing exactly the same thing that
you accuse XBox owners and Unix users of doing. I'm glad you are happy
with your purchase, but you are in effect saying that everyone else is
just wrong and being defensive about it, and then you are going and
doing the same thing yourself. Live and let live, buddy.

It is a very good game, probably the second best racing game for the x-box
(F1 2001 by EA is still tops in my opinion). If you like racing games and
have an x-box this is a must buy.
However, this is not a game to go out and buy an x-box for though. The
physics are for the most part good for a console game, but no were near the
quality of GPL or even F1 2001 for that matter (something about sliding
sideways doing a 150 Mph on tarmac in a rally car and not rolling it makes
me question the seriousness of the physics model). It is just a very fun,
great looking racing game for the casual gamer.
Bottom line, great game, poor sim.
Not that I know of, there is a trick to getting the 12,000 points easier
though.
1) Practice in time attack on the track you're about to race in career mode
(CM).
2) Then practice a race.
3) Then go into CM and race this one track, come in first.
4) Move to the next track in CM, then quit.
5) Goto Step 1.
If you complete each race with a 1st or 2nd place, you'll easily get the 12k
points to open hill climb.

I prefer the hood view as I find cockpit views in rally sims (and NFS

I would rather kill myself than play GPL or GPx in any view apart from
cockpit...

Max Payne looks better on xbox because it came from a PC
EA Sports games (like SSX Tricky and Madden 02) look better on PS2, because
they are 2nd gen PS2 titles.
I am not defending my choice. I actually said the GC was better, but I went
for the PS2 because I personally prefer some of the PS2 games to GC games.
How is that being biased towards PS2? I think the most playable games
available will all be on GC. But I want a little more variety.
I didn't mean ALL of the xbox owners try to justify their personal choices,
just the ones who go into EB or Dixons or whatever and get brainwashed by
the salesman. This is the current argument for xbox vs PS2:
xbox
has a HD, doesn't need memory cards
has 4 controller ports
4 player makes the screen too small
has more Mhz, even though it is from a non-gaming architecture
is online out of the box
can play DVDs with the official remote (available separately from MS)
USB ports on console are redesigned so you can't plug your PC keyboard/mouse
in.
3rd party hardware must be officially endorsed by microsoft (probably with a
% of sales, too)
need to buy a memory card to transfer savegames to another system, or to use
your unlocked game characters against a friend in 2/4 player mode.
can buy a disc to make DVD region free
ps2
needs memory cards which are expensive
has 2 controller ports, expandable with multitaps(1 MT = 5 ports, 2MTs = 8
ports)
8 player games only work in sports sims etc where all characters are on
screen at once (pro evolution etc)
online requires an adapter at extra cost
DVD out of the box
can buy 3rd party controllers, remotes, multitaps etc without sony
endorsement
USB ports same as PC so keyboard/mouse/steering wheel can be transferred
across
can buy a disc or a memory card to make DVD region free
HD is available soon at extra cost (5x bigger than xbox HD)
when it is all added up, it is about the same price, but the nice man in
your local electronics store (who is probably on commission anyway) only
tells the xbox side of the argument. So many people buy xboxes and then
wonder if they really have been duped by the nice man. So they try to
convince themselves with unjustified argument. If you thought about it and
got an xbox because you personally wanted one, then good for you, please
ignore all of my comments, and maybe we will meet up in a cross-console
online gaming world pretty soon.

Fair enough, and btw I wasn't as worked up as I probably sounded. ;o)
> 4 player makes the screen too small
True for split screen games, but 4 player in many fighting and sports
games doesn't require split screen. Of course, the same can be said for
PS2 on this one, and if I understood you correctly the PS2 is expandable
to more than 4 players. 8 players in a team sports game would be a
blast.
> USB ports same as PC so keyboard/mouse/steering wheel can betransferred

Must admit I'm a bit jealous of that one.
> HD is available soon at extra cost (5x bigger than xbox HD)
One good thing about the XBox HD that many people aren't aware of is
that it is only used for storing saved games and settings, you don't
install games to it. So it's small size relative to a PC hard drive
really isn't an issue (yet).
I think the primary difference between the two systems is that PS2 has a
ton of good games now, but XBox has a hard drive now, at no extra cost.
I find the hard drive very useful, not just for saved games but for
ripping music also. Since I have the Xbox connected to my receiver, I
often just use it as a digital juke box. And I expect that the XBox
will soon have some very good games, including Pro Race Driver and
Morrowwind, so I'm not that concerned about the current sparseness of
the selection.
Anyway I will readily admit that even though I had been looking forward
to the XBox since I first heard about it, I was still teetering between
the XBox and the PS2 all the way up to about a month before the XBox's
introduction. I honestly very nearly bought a PS2 for GT3. But I am
happy with my XBox, and I'm glad you're happy with your PS2.
Regards,
Hal

Relying on a salesperson in a store to make your buying decisions would be
the first mistake. There are good games on both systems. I have both, but
right now for my tastes the Xbox is getting more games that appeal to me. I
also think that the Xbox has more features for the money. HDTV
support(currently only 480P), 5.1 surround, custom soundtracks, ethernet,
hard drive. By the way, 4 player split screen is great fun in all of these
games and the screens are definitely not too small at my house. You just
need a bigger TV to take advantage of it.

Apparently, Final Fantasy X and XI will extensively use the HD, as will
Championship Manager on PS2 and some other games. Also I heard that you can
save music to it and games will use it in games like replays etc. Don't know
about that one, though. Other than that, I can't really see the benefit yet.
It will come into it's own with the online connection though. Oh, and saving
games like Smackdown: Just Bring It which needs 4Mb (!?!) to save.
Nick.
> By the way, 4 player split screen is great fun in all of these

I have a 28inch Panasonic flat widescreen, so it's not like i'm using a
portable TV or anything, but all the 4 player games I have played I haven't
really enjoyed, everything from Goldeneye through to racing games like TOCA
and Quake 3. But games like Pro Evolution, FIFA, and just about any sport
game are just fantastic with 8 players or more : I've played one of the
FIFAs with almost everybody on the pitch being controlled by a human - now
that was amazing! People get pulled out of position just like real life,
sometimes you don't pass to somebody because you know they are really
useless, etc, etc.
Back to my point, I never really got into 4 player splits coz from my sofa
(even with my big-screen TV) you can't see much.
The problem with 8 players though, is you need 2 multitaps (and 8
controllers). Between us, my mates have 8 controllers, and I recently bought
this little stand thing which is just amazing. It holds your PS2 in the
vertical position, it has an external on/off switch (so you don't have to
reach around the back of your console to turn it off), loads of AV
inputs/outputs (so it acts like a kind of splitter box between my PS2, Sky
Digital and DVD player), A 4 player multitap built in (with the ports spread
around the base), and has a DVD remote receiver built in, to use the
supplied remote. All for less than 20 (~$30). It is the best peripheral
ever and I thoroughly suggest all PS2 owners get one.
Nick.

Good point. Expansions of any kind, whether it is add on content, a
custom controller driver, on-line capability or whatever will have to
use the hard drive.

True, but they are compressed (at I think 5:1 or so) so they don't
really take up much space. On of the Xbox sites (wish I could remember
which one) tried to intentionally fill up the hard drive by repeatedly
copying music files. I forget how many hours worth of music they
finally got on before it filled up, but it was way more than I have in
my CD collection. I don't think I will need to worry about the hard
drive capacity for a few years (yes I know, famous last words!).

Holding down the Q for a few seconds puts it in standby mode, but to
really turn it off, you need to use the switch. I prefer to turn the
lot off, coz at university I have to pay for the electricity in my
hall, and everything is either off or in use. It's my way, and I'm
sticking to it... :-)
