So, is anyone going to step up and try this? Just one car, to see how it
would work. I am completely lacking in the necessary skills, but I know
there are some really talented people out there who could give us a
high-poly car model and we could then see how tweakable and accurate the
physics are.

Please - no.
I'd much rather see the effort spent on F1 72, or historic Le Mans
cars, or the F1 83 mod that's already in progress.
Why work hard to remake something that's already been done well? Not
to mention the sh*tstorm of controversy that would ensue as proponents
of one version or the other go after each other?
What needs to be proven? GPL itself shows how good the Papy engine
is, the GT mod shows how good the ISI engine is: both great.
The followup posts on Alison's interview make me think something is
brewing for GPL (or maybe even N4/2002?). I can't wait to see what's
next for either sim.

I am quite new to this and have never heard anything about this mod. I
picked up a few comments at RSC about a '72 mod that was in the works,
but not an '83 mod. Can you please tell a bit more about this?

I haven't checked the progress in a while, but the URL is:

Hope it sees the light of day!
