Now that N2002 has been released outside the U.S. and Eldred has his server
running and passworded, are we going to try and have a race this weekend?
David G Fisher
Planning the second r.a.s. NR2002 race at Sears Point
With NASCAR Racing 2002 now released in Europe, regulars organised a Sunday race on EldredP's server and chose Sears Point. A long debate followed over the redesigned Sears Point layout: Tom Pabst defended it, saying Winston Cup drivers had voted on configurations tested in simulators, while Ed Solheim and ymenard missed the old carousel layout. The race went ahead with clean, enjoyable racing and yellows turned off.
Automated summary.

Sears would be great, love racing there. Still need some practice
though, after 5 laps my tires are -gone- :)
My first online race yesterday was actually surprisingly good, had
some good racing on coca cola with a bunch of guys, constant drafting
and three wide half of the time. There were a couple of morons on the
track but thankfully we could avoid them.

Well if "they" hadn't screwed the track completely up I might have joined
in.... (well add to the fact that I cannot get hold of N2002 yet :-( )...
but I'm the Sears point we got in N4 (I assume N2002 isn't *that much*
different (although it is updated)) isn't very fitting for the sim. Quite
frankly - it sucks... I used to loved the old Sears Point in N2, but the
new layout of the track and the physics of N4, just make me motion sick..
The track might be a blast - just not in N4.

LOL! I somehow think the same Ed. Yes, I know the track now is like it is
in real-life, but I just prefer the old and less realistic layout there was
in N2, it was more difficult before they "Bristolised" Sears Point ;) :(

Actually, N2K2 Sears is the best of the bunch (for driving
accuracy)......except T7 is incorrect (Papy used an early mod config of it
that was never built)....and the stupid Media Building included in
N2K2...that was taken out in N3 because Sears tore it down. And the
surrounding hills and trees coloring....what's new...Papy never does this
correct. If I could find a mip/bmp converter that works on N2K2 mips....I'd
fix all this stuff and post it. But so far....no dice. But I agree with
all of you....the old N2 course with the original "sports car" config of the
carousel.....it was pretty fun (also pretty easy to drive which SPR is NOT).
As of two days ago.....Turn #1 has been completely changed (part of the new
construction separating the drag strip launch pad from the road
course)...you can see pics of this at the real-world Sears Point web site.
I'm going to be driving the "new" track in a few days....I'll give you guys
an update.

The old version - with the carousel and the drag-stip was miles better than

I have hundreds of TPTCC laps around the N2/N99/N3 Sears, but less than 3

What's up with SP in NR2002? Anyone else feel like they're driving on
ice here? I thought at first Papy had screwed the track grip. But it's
actually set higher than WG is. I know there is a lot of elevation
change here that will make the car feel light. Still, I can't believe
that the car would feel this way in real life.

Ahem, Ed.
How many laps have you run on the real (current) Sears Point Track. Or, how
many Winston Cup races have you attended there in the last few years? TV
coverage doesn't always "tell the whole picture".....you know. From the
standpoint of an "at race" fan.....this track is now one of the most
spectacular road racing tracks in the entire world. From 90% of the current
"seats" (or terrace seating locations) a fan can see the entire 2+ miles of
the road racing circuit (can follow a race car around by sight)......but for
about 100 feet of it if you sit up in the T2 terrace seats only. Look up
just slightly from the track and you gaze out a nearly a 360 degree view of
the Sonoma Wine country....North bay area of San Francisco. The "view" by
itself....... is worth the price of admission......but you can't see this on
TV. FIA officials visiting the track this winter....were blown away by what
they saw. The track is now on their "possible" list of alternate tracks for
a USAGP....or possibly a second USAGP race. So, I think your comment
represents the viewpoint of an uninformed/misinformed person....IMHO.

racing. But its just as tough in real-life....so N2K2 does a good job of
simulating the frustration of racing at Sears Point
Raceway.....ESPECIALLY...in a Winston Cup B'oat!
I'd be glad to get in the practice session early and help anyone out who
wants some tips on getting around the track. Also, the default setups are
not very good.....makes the car feel like its running in the rain or on an
"ice track." That's the fault of the setups....not the track or the sim. I
think John Simmons has a very good handle on running at Sears too....and I'm
sure he'd be glad to help anyone who wants it.
If you pay attention to Darryl's "lesson"....he is pretty much spot-on with
his "tips" for getting around Sears. The "line" he suggests is
decent....and running practice laps with the racing line turned on....will
help you immensely! Try to set your gearing as you are learning the
track...so you use only three gears (2nd, 3rd and 4th)....and don't use 1st
gear in T11. Here's another caveat of racing at Sears......don't be tempted
to late brake into T11 (its the biggest mistake I see in online racing at
Sears).........brake well before the start of the white line that demarks
the pit road exit. You can get away with braking later than that (at the
white line, for example)...but your margin of error is very small....and you
will pay a huge "price" in your lap time if you miss you mark by a couple
feet at best......or crumble yourself up in the tire wall in T11...at the
worst. And, if you brake late perfectly......it only gives you about .1
secs....not worth the huge risk of missing a braking point by only two
feet......IMHO.
Setup suggestions (I have only worked on my set up for about an hour.....so
its no where near worth giving it out....you can get close in a few
"clicks"): Start with the "intermediate" setup (the "fast" is
terrible..IMHO). Stiffen up all four corners to take the body roll
out...and get the car sliding in the high-speed turns. Add two pounds tire
pressure all around......then you will probably need to back these down a
1/2 pound per corner as you get dialed in. If you fudge the "left
turn/right turn" bias....fudge towards right turns (there's more of
those)....but ***don't give up too much speed*** down the main straight and
up into T1 and T2......or you'll not like your race performance....but your
lap times won't show you this until you race the AI (or me). I run the AI
at 89%.....its about right for the lap times I'm running at Sears at this
level of seat time and setup work. I turn race laps of mid
1:22's....usually qual at mid-1:21's......nothing special (pb is a 1:20.11).
Want some extra help....follow Jeff Gordon in a race (just run an AI
race...but don't get into your car).
At race starts....brake early going up into T2.....leave lots of room on
both sides......try to stay in the center of the track as you turn into
T2.......and try to get sorted single file BEFORE getting into T2, even
better! I know that's not totally realistic....but it will avoid "the big
one" at race starts in online racing at Sears. You are not going to win the
race on the first lap in any online race....and it is double-triple
underlined....at Sears. Use caution following closely into T7....for the
same reason. If you consider the general braking zone into that turn to
begin about half-way down the short straight....you'll be prepared to avoid
rear-ending your competitors.
Just like Darryl says in the "lesson"....you'll be frustrated and hate Sears
Point....at first......but keep practicing and working on your set up. All
of a sudden....you'll "have it".....and when you get to this point...its one
of the more rewarding experiences in sim racing......a really good
accomplishment to be comfortable and competitive at Sears Point in N2K2.
This track is not for beginners....or people that don't take their sim
racing seriously.
See you guys on Sunday.
Tom
*PS: Race time is 10:00 am Pacific Standard Time...??? just confirming.
**PSS: I'm wondering if it might not be more fun.....since pretty much
everyone is inexperienced at racing at Sears in N2K2....to do a series of
shorter, "sprint" type races (say 20 laps)......with no damage and no
yellows. Three or four of these races back to back..... might give everyone
a better feel for racing at Sears.....and it takes the whole issue of tire
wear and fuel consumption out of the equation. Unless everyone is really
proficient racing at Sears.....we're just going to be parade of "yellow
laps".....interspersed with a few racing laps....you know....running a 50%
race? Not my idea of "fun racing with your buddies."

all that's beside the point. What I'm talking about is I see/feel in N4....
Like I (think I) mentioned in one of my earlier posts - the track may be
great in real life or with a proper racecar - it's just that in N4 an/or
with these stockcars - it's utterly crap...
Having said that, just because it's a nice place to attend races - dosn't
automaticlly mean it's a good track... just look at the Bristol for example
:-)
As for a GP at Sears Point.... I seriously doubt that will ever happen....
(although I'd love to be proven wrong on this.)

The race was *supposed* to be at 1pm eastern on Sunday, but there are
dissenting opinions. I'm currently just waiting for a consensus...<g>

I would tend to agree with you on the N4 track......Sears wasn't too good
(not modeled very well either.....even if it wasn't the new config). But,
N2K2 is better ....and I think you'll like the new WC Chute. While its not
better than the old carousel sports car course....its far better than the
original WC Chute was. You might be pleasantly surprised at the N2K2 Sears?
Another thing, the WC cars are not very nimble....and Sears is a track where
"nimbleness" is at a premium. I really am anxious to get hold of a good
sports car sim....with a properly modeled Sears Point......I think it might
become a sim community "favorite"....at least for the road racers among us.
I do know that not having been to a race track in real-life....steals some
of the ability from my mind to imagine and enjoy racing on the sim track.
This was made very clear to me last year....when I visited Silverstone for
two days of F1 team testing....now the Silverstone track in F1-2001 is
"alive" in my mind when I drive it......but the other tracks are still kind
of "flat"....doesn't tweak my imagination very much when racing on them.
Since I've driven Sears (obviously) and Watkins Glen quite a bit....that
probably gives me an advantage for running them in N2K2......but not much of
one.
Sears Point is truly becoming a spectacular race track.......not only from a
driver's standpoint (which it has pretty much always been), but from a fan's
standpoint now with the new terracing and grandstands. How many road
courses in the world at 2 + miles in length can say the fan can follow a car
around the entire circuit......without losing site of the car (but for a
couple brief instances as it passes a grandstand)? Not many. Then, with
the fact that Sears is located up very high on a hillside (much like
Bathurst)....the view for the fans of the surrounding horizon is very
spectacular. Combine all of this....and the FIA guys were impressed. From
a physical and marketing standpoint....there's nothing about the new Sears
Point that would prevent an F1 race there now. However, politics in racing
probably have a lot more to do with that ever happening.....than the track
itself. So, I'd agree with you.....we'll probably never see an F1 race
Sears.
Hope to see you on the virtual Sears....tomorrow. It will be a blast to
race with you guys.....even if I have to look at your butts all race long!
Regards,
Tom

Well Tom, most of us here on r.a.s. really don't care about what fans think.
We want a racetrack for the drivers, not the fans. I'm sorry, but the
"Bristolised" Sears Point is a very boring track compared to the old, longer
layout.
> The track is now on their "possible" list of alternate tracks for a USAGP
Won't ever happen. Yeah I can SO much see F1's doing sub-1minute laps at SP
with absolutely no realistic safety zones for high velocity cars like
Formula Ones. And don't tell me it's safe for F1 with whatever 100-line
proof. It's BS, the track is not safe for F1.

I actually prefer the old version Tom. It was fun to push the braking zone
at the limit of the previous long right corner. I don't care if you could
pass there or not, but the long right corner *was* a good corner before
braking into the Chute. Now it's just two boring corners.

There is much better tracks elsewhere in the USA, either from a safety POV
or just the fact that they are longer and much better suited for F1. The
layout of SP doesn't suit Formula Ones. It's not made for it, like you
would not see NASCAR going around the Gilles Villeneuve circuit.

FIA did have success with their USGP Wests at Long Beach, so I
wouldn't think it's too far fetched. It would definitely be an
interesting track to drive an F1 car on.
Also, why do you hate Bristol so much? I realize it sucks for pickup
races but it's not too bad against the AI or in a league setting.
Jason
I just spent my first hour and a half with this track and while I think it's
an excellent track overall, and would probably be great to visit due to the
setting and other reasons Tom described, I don't like it AT ALL with a
NASCAR car. "Tedious" is the best word to describe the experience. WG isn't
much better. It really is like steering a boat.
Another type of car at SP would probably be a blast, but not a NASCAR car.
Is a 1:24 a crap time?

three different versions of the track in our sims, disagreed with both of
us. The config that was built (and mostly represented in N2K2....T7 is
quite wrong in the sim, however) was the one they selected by vote (more
than 30 drivers).
The "results" from last year's race tends to support their decision as being
a good one. But, from pure racing enjoyment....mod version #1 was my
favorite....it turned the entire WC Chute....from T3a to the entry of the
esses (T8) into a 9 degree banked, sweeping, downhill, right-hand turn much
like T9 at the old Riverside Raceway track. Top speed in the turn was over
140mph in the sim.....it was a blast and it was 60 feet wide so you could
pass at will in the turn. But, the team crew chief's voted it down....they
were fearful of the high speeds the drivers were carrying into the top of
the esses....and they were right.

Which turns do you think would pose a problem for F1? The only one I
could think of as a problem was T7 (assuming that was the flat-out
righthand sweeper that was changed) but that's been tightened and
there's a long paved runoff area (which is good since FIA has
determined that paved runoff areas are safer than grass or sand).
Since FIA bases dangerous corners on G-forces I don't think SP would
be a problem. I think it would generate a big traffic jam with all of
the slow corners but the elevation changes are definitely more
interesting than anything currently on the F1 calendar.
Jason
Francois....
First of all, "when you can have both a driver's track and a fan's
track"......you have a winner that will simply see more racing, bigger
events and more accessibility to us all (better sim reproduction as
well....any developer's sim ever screw up Talladega or Daytona?).
Next....the "bristol-ization" of Sears.....as you call it......wasn't the
reason the course was changed. The WC course was changed nearly 5 years
ago. The terracing and "stadium" seating wasn't even conceptualized until
two years ago. The two are not related in any way, shape or form! The
primary reason for this was the fact that the way the "lay of the land"
was....you couldn't get more than a few hundred "fans" into the area
represented by T5 through T6 (the carousel) and that meant that nearly 1/3rd
of the track was raced on with no one (or very few) being able to see it.
The cars would disappear into this area, come out 30 seconds later.....and
you had no idea what happened while they were out of sight. That is
primarily why the WC Chute concept was first developed. It had nothing to
do with the later "stadium seating" that evolved.
You are probably not the only one confused about this fact.

Yeah well that's not a big problem, it's just my opinion here no? They
didn't like the corner, I liked it ;)

Yes it would had been similar to the old layout, exiting the long sweeping
downhill left hander into the end portion of the drag strip, but reversed
and 180 degrees :)
That would had been good, but it would had been "Bristolised" a little too
much at my taste. It's already too simple as it is now.

Not as badly as I will.... 1m26.8s. Not a problem, provided you guys don't
press the issue in silly places.

Silly question perhaps, but does it make any difference which brand one pics
(Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Pontiac)? -Can't seem to find how to change the chassis
for the player car (#83 Papyrus) or is it all just a graphical difference
now?
I'll have the #17 DeWalt Ford for the race later, if that's ok.

Not a silly question at all. In real life, the car make does make a
difference. As far as I can tell, in N2002, there is no performance
difference between the different car makes. I may be wrong of course.
Maybe Eric Busch can give us a definitive answer. Eric, are you out there?

To be frank that's not too fast, my quali times are in the 19s and
racing laps are between 20-22. And I think like with every track Sears
only becomes fun when you are starting to drive on the limit.. those
first two lefthanders are great fun when you slide through them,
barely avoiding that wall on the left side, and you can take those
esses allmost at full speed, using all of the curbs.

Watch the driving lesson on Sears Point. It really helped me to reduce my
lap times from 1:24's to 1:22's and a single mid 1:21.
Cheers

dang Postal Service ....:)
Sunday Morning, the earlier the better, to A: avoid conflict with my Cart
league late Sunday Afternoon, and B: to avoid conflict with my family who
only seem to 'need' me when I'm racing.

I'm not familiar with your "server".....what name do you run it under and
how many drivers can it handle with N2K2?
Thanks for doing this, man....its way cool. Sorry you'll not be running
with us, though!

I'm looking forward to racing with all of you at Sears.....should be a blast
and a few "giggles" thrown in for a bonus!
I wanted to tell everyone that I can't "chat" once I'm in the race. I run
N2K2 in an enclosed cockpit and its still **under construction** so I've not
rigged a second keyboard in it yet for typing (the keyboard sits
upright...behind the wheel and to the right)...nearly impossible to chat but
for "hunt and peck" through the spokes of the wheel...sort of). I didn't
want you guys to think I was being rude......not chatting with you between
races.
Ed, sorry you are not going to make it....honestly.
From the looks of the lap times being reported by a few who've been
practicing.....looks like its going to be a fun and competitive race.
Except for George Sandman....everyone is in the same window of race speeds
at Sears. That's cool.
Later...

Nah you weren't. Every time I saw you, you had your car parked in one

Thats because I can read the F2 leaderboard...
"Damn! somebody's 23 seconds behind, I'd better pull over before he's right
on top of me..."
seriously, I locked up twice during the laps I managed to get in....I did
keep you insight for about 3/4ths of a lap but when the Sandman passed me he
was gone in two turns..hehehe.
If Tom P is reading this...on the first lap on the last straight I locked
up ...he/you were right behind me...what did my online car do when my system
froze.??

One last thing - does anyone have the results from the race?
Pref. one displaying qual-times and # of cautions.

Yea, it was very cool to finally race people (as opposed to the pick up
races) who you could trust to race realistically. I had confidence that the
other drivers had skill, awareness, and good judgement and that makes a HUGE
difference in the way you approach the racing. In the pickup races you end
up just trying to survive.
Thanks again for the server and hopefully you'll be able to make the next
races.

Sorry - I'm just getting caught up on messages. I've been under the weather...
The N2k2 servers are ep_server1 and ep_server2. I've seen races host as many
as 30=35 drivers when I ran it 'open'. If there's a password set, it's usually
"ras". I may have some races in the rotation that are open, just to get more
people in them. I just started it up again for the night - it's looping 6
different tracks, IIRC...
You're welcome!
