Lockups after switching from Voodoo5 to GeForce

Dave Henrie suffered repeated lockups in NASCAR Racing 2002 and F1 2001 after changing to an Nvidia card. Suggestions included removing leftover 3dfx drivers, checking the power supply and AGP power on the ASUS motherboard, and testing the RAM. Swapping in known-good Crucial memory appeared to fix it, and the thread ended with a testy exchange between Tom Pabst and Goy Larsen over ASUS boards.

two lockups during the ras n2002 Sears, then a lockup during a F12001 ALMS mod test...(absolutely rubbish online btw) and I'm thinking of yanking this dang nvidia piece out and getting the V5 back... dave henrie
Dave, I've never had a game relatedd lockup since replacing my Voodoo. Something must not be quite right. Dave; If you haven't got rid fo all the VooDoo stuff, you don't have to re-install Windows, and 98 works just fine with the switch, it's what I have. Things to do, if not done: -in "add/remove" programs, get rid of the 3dfx drivers. -after that, using the "find" function from your start button, do a search for 3dfx*.*, 3dfx.*, opengl*.*, and opengl.* If/when you find something with this, delete them. -remove any folders, etc. left over on your hard drive that's showing in Windows Explorer. -re-install your Nvidia stuff. That's all I did in my switch, and have never had a problem. -John "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:_%yn8.108445$af7.59685@rwcrnsc53... > two lockups during the ras n2002 Sears, then a lockup during a F12001ALMS > mod test...(absolutely rubbish online btw) and I'm thinking of yankingthis > dang nvidia piece out and getting the V5 back... > dave henrie > >
OK thanks for the hints..I'll keep digging, The power supply is an Antec 350 watt. I did find a folder with backup drivers I'll see if that effected things. dave henrie "John Pancoast" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Although the power supply may be capable, your motherboard my not be. I popped a GeForce 3 into my older computer and started experiencing odd lock-ups. The technician told me that my motherboard (ASUS K7M) didn't send enough power to the AGP slot to fully power up the capacitors on the GeForce card. If I wait for ten minutes after turning the power on, I can safely go, but if I try much before that, I get system lock-ups. It might be worth checking with a reputable technician -- if you know one. Well it's an Asus, but the only techs around here are the kind that yank out a piece and send it back to the factory for replacement...i.e. wait 6 weeks to race again.... dave henrie "Darryl Johnson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:CoNn8.2376$[email hidden]...

Dave, when you lock up, do you have to re-boot or does it somehow unlock itself after a short time? Usually I imagine a lock up as something that only a complete re-boot of the game (or system) will get you out of. My screen freezes for a few seconds and I'm wondering if we are experiencing something similiar but using different terms to describe it. I get two lockups...the main one is the sound starts looping and the screen freezes and I have to hit the reset button to get ANYTHING working again. nope...two computers here, both with win98 and my son's friend has a system here sometimes(the curse of cable--Half-lifers wanna be lowpingboys) and he too has 98se. The 3 major causes of these type of lockups are bad ram and bad power supply or heat when it's hardware related. I'm pretty sure the memory is pc133 but I got it from a local shop so I'm not too sure of the quality. Dave... On the Antec 350....what's the output over the combined +5v and 3.3v circuits - it needs to be north of 200W....if its not....that's a strong probable cause of lock ups. The other problem, is your mobo may not be putting the correct (or enough) power to the AGP port (typical ASUS problem)......and the kind of lockups where you get something like "auto" reboot of Windows....those are heat related. You need tons of fans and cooling to run AMD cpu's and Nvidia cards...and I mean tons of fans. Stick a cheap thermo ($10-bucks at most cooling sites) in your case.......check your internal case temps and if they are above 35C....that's a real possible source for all these random lockups you are getting. I run four 80mm case fans in all my race rigs....plus a 120mm blow-hole right over the CPU and AGP port. My case temps are still (a consistent) 25C when sim racing. On really hot days, I see my case temps edge over 30C....and I start getting some lockups if I don't remove the case sides and blow air on them with floor fans. So....what are your case temps there, my man? I would say the odds that this is because of your new Nvidia card....are about a million to one! Stop bashing Nvidia....its making you look stupid - IMHO. When I was racing with you at SP on Sunday, you were warping badly all the time.....not just occasionally. I believe you had a bad connection to the server.......that happens despite a perfect running rig....you know? If you are on cable or DSL.....have you optimized your TTL, RWIN and MTU settings? If not...that would be a big source of the problems you had on Sunday. IMHO, Win98SE is the best gaming ops-sys still......though XP is catching up quickly on all the "speed" tests I've seen on the net for gaming rigs. As a general rule, when ever you change a primary piece of hardware....like a video card....from one type to another (like you did going from 3dfx to Nvidia)...it is not very wise to not install a fresh ops-sys. If you did not, you are asking for all these problems you are having...IMHO. Dave, get your case temps cooled down, get your power supply up to adequate (if its not) levels, change the mobo to a modern board (not ASUS) and reinstall Win98SE from scratch with ACPI turned off......and I bet you....you never lock up again. That's about 4 hours worth of work if you know what you are doing....if not, take it to a shop and have it done professionally. As much as you sim race, Dave....its hard to believe you think you can do all this tech stuff on your own. I've known you in here....for what, two-plus years now. I can not recall ever coming into RAS practically....and not seen "hardware problems" posts from "Dave Henry"....your like a "fixture of RAS" in that regard......lol.... If I'd had all the problems you've had over these last two years....I'd have shot myself or jumped out of a 3rd story window long ago! I've seen guys like you in SCCA club racing many times. They spend the entire race weekend with their head up the butt of their race cars, covered in grease and rarely make it to pre-grid on time and in a relaxed "ready-to-race" state of mind. They take the green, blow up or crash on the 3rd or 4th lap....then bitch about some new part they installed (minutes before the race) being at fault. On top of that, they usually are running some English-made race car (Sprite, Austin Healy, Triumph)....patched together with coat hangers and bitch because the guys running Toyota's have a "cake walk" all weekend long, usually sit on the pole, finish every race.....and don't bring as much as a screwdriver to the track with them (because its never needed). Any of you guys who have run SCCA Club racing before.......know exactly what I'm talking about. Okay, that's the end of my "Dave Henrie banging" for the day.....lol..... Man, you keep putting your foot firmly in your mouth everytime you post. Just because you type "lol" at the end of a sentence doesn't make it less of an insult... it just points out how bad your sense of humor is. Your analogy about the cars people drive at SCCA events is completely irrelevant or more to the point mis-guided at best. I am very technically proficient when it comes to computers and I have a home network with 5 computers on it. Two have 3dfx based cards, one ATI, one Matrox, and one Nvidia... of all the computer graphics cards I have owned over the years the 3dfx were the most trouble free to set up and keep running extremely stable. We all know ATI's driver track record (although it's improving) and the Matrox machine is basically for 2d graphics manipulation and web browsing. The Nvidia (granted, older GeForce2MX card) runs very well but the constant driver updates to run different games is a PITA. Lets take your analogy and spin it like this. Triumph (nVidia... read that fast and hard to keep running reliably) buys Toyota (3dfx... read that fast and extremely reliable) and forces everyone through market domination to run thier hardware. I think that is a more accurate picture of how things are. I think you are way off base in your assertions that Dave needs new hardware (new motherboard? come on!) and a complete re-install just because he bought a new graphics card. It makes you look equally stupid defending nVidia at every turn. Robin

Goy.. I really don't have any "empirical data" on the ASUS boards....just my own experience building race boxes.......a couple hundred by now. I don't particularly care for any mobo brand....they all have problems and I'm sure you'd agree with that statement....without empirical data to back it up. But, my experience (only *my* experience) has been that I can usually work through the problems with other brands.....never with ASUS. That doesn't mean that its not possible to have a trouble free sim rig with an ASUS mobo....I just haven't been able to do it (so far). My favorite "brand" of motherboards is: "OneThatWorks".....and that's never been ASUS. I would love to change that because I can get a special "price" on ASUS mobo's through my hardware supplier. I pay much more for mobo's because I can not get an ASUS board working on a consistent basis. Now, I admit, I've not tried any ASUS board's that have come out in the last four months. I'm not knocking ASUS - the company.......I buy their video cards on a regular basis and really like them. My only reason for suggesting that Dave "try" another mobo is because his rig was behaving the way I've experienced several "ASUS" based rigs I've had....and never could solve the problem until I switched mobos. I just thought it was worth a try....since he seemed to be frustrated and acting like he was running out of options....that's all. PS: The fact that four of the five computers you have at home have currently have 2 3dfx, 1 Matrox and 1 ATI video cards on them......tells me you are not actually very technically proficient....or smart. .....lol.... I have no problems with people recommending other brands than ASUS, after all it's a free world, mostly anyways :-), and competition is good for the consumer, but in my 6 years of being a PC manufacturer, small time I'll admit that since we only sell 2-300 PC's a year, we've had substantially less warranty claims on boxes with ASUS MoBo's than with most other brands we've tried, currently we offer our customers a choice of ASUS, MicroStar and AOpen, if it was up to me we'd use nothing but ASUS, but since the competition is fierce and people mostly look at the price, we have to offer cheaper brands as well, so in cooperation with our subcontractor, we also offer those two other brands as an alternative, those are the only brands we use when the customer wants a complete PC with a 3 year warranty That's not to say that there aren't other brands that will work well for you, I've heard lots of good things about Epox lately, but it's not readily available over here We've used other brands as well in the past, Abit for instance, but the warranty claims was *way* too high to keep offering it in mainstream boxes, we still sell Abit boards to people who insists on building their own boxes, but we don't offer the same warranty as we do on ASUS or MicroStar, and even MicroStar has a significantly higher number of MoBo's that go bad for us and has to be replaced under warranty than ASUS does, but nothing like we've had with Abit in the past, AOpen seems to be pretty good as well but we only use that as an alternative when we can't get MicroStar boards so the number of PC's we sell with AOpen boards is too low to give any sort of statistical background for saying they're better or worse than the other two, I would suspect that our subcontractor would have looked into this though since they offer this as an alternative When I say "subcontractor", it's because I don't know a better word for it, it's a professional PC building company that builds PC's to order for shops like ours, they build around 30 000 boxes a year, and since they are the ones who are responsible for the warranty claims in the end, meaning when I have to change a MoBo in a PC they've built for one of our customers I charge them for the labor and they have to replace the defective MoBo, they ship me a new MoBo, I replace it and ship the defective part back to them, labor and shipping costs paid by them, we get paid 50 dollars an hour for doing warranty work like that rather than shipping the defective PC back to them, so it's in their own interest to use good quality parts.....and since I'm the one who does this kind of work at our shop, and I think it's a bloody boring job after having built "boxes" for a living for the past 6 years, I'd rather not have the PC back for warranty work at all, even if we actually make money on warranty work, and that's even without looking at what it "costs" us in terms of poor customer relations, we've had this arrangement going for about 2 years now, before that we built our own boxes but we simply don't have the time anymore So IMHO Tom, you've either got your numbers mixed up or you've been very unlucky with your ASUS boards, speaking only from a quality/warranty POV here of course Yes, I know you've had problems with your CUV4X (I think) MoBo's TOM, and I agree, they were pretty much crap, but so where many MoBo's that used VIA chipset for Intel P3's, especially the 693 chipset and early revisions of the 694 chipset, VIA screwed up basically, but they were the only option there for a long time since Intel only had the 820 chip out and you'd have to use RDRAM on those, in contrast the BX based P3B and CUBX, which both will run 133FSB very well, was some of the best boards we've ever used, hardly any warranty claims at all So for me it's the other way around Tom, I pay a premium for ASUS boards and think it's well worth it Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com http://www.teammirage.com "Animation isn't the illusion of life; it is life" --Chuck Jones (1912-2002)--
