If We Have Another R.a.s./N2002 Race This Weekend.....

Choosing track and format for the next r.a.s. NR2002 race

After the Sears Point race, David G Fisher proposed choosing the next track early. Participants settled on Saturday at 4pm EST, favoured Bristol or Watkins Glen with fixed setups and longer races requiring pit stops, and debated whether to allow restarts after first-lap wrecks. Force-feedback settings and lap times were also compared, and the races looked set to become a weekly event.

...how about we choose the track(s) early so we can get some practice time in during the week? Some of us are new to this NASCAR stuff and have little experience with many of the tracks (like SP this past Sunday). David G Fisher

I cannot make it as I'm going away.... but if I were to make a suggestion - it would be the Brickyard... one of my fav. tracks in N4.. Come to think of it - if you get a good sized field, then a long (50%+) SS race would be a blast. -- ed_

Unfortunately I can't make it either coming Sunday :-/ Andre
It doesn't have to be Sunday. I'd actually much prefer it was on Saturday. I could go for Bristol, just ran a league race there last night and it was a lot of fun. You guys running fixed setups? Don Burnette
I'd vote for any oval(except a SS<G>), as long as we used fixed setups. Makes it more fun, for the guys who are new to Nascar sim racing IMO, plus more fun to us vets, as there's less wrecks <G> But then, I don't know if I can make it this week anyway. -John "Don Burnette" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:hjZn8.264721$[email hidden]...

I had a blast in Sunday's race. Count me in if the RAS races continue. I'm open for either sat or sun. I like the longer races also Andre (at least 1 stop). Any track is fine w/me but I really do prefer the roadies. The Glen sounds really great to me! :) Mitch "Andre Warringa" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Tue, 26 Mar 2002 10:59:37 GMT, "David G Fisher" > <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >It doesn't have to be Sunday. Saturday would be better than Sunday for me as its a NASCAR "race day" here in the USA and very often I have lots of people over to watch the race (and cook brunch for). Last Sunday was a very rare exception......I would almost never make it for Sunday RAS racing. Saturdays.....I could probably run in half the events. I run in a group made up of mostly real-world drivers on Monday nights. We have just recently switched from running GPL (the guys are almost all road racers) to N2K2. So, for the first time in a while I'm dialing-in N2K2 (or N4-like NASCAR type) online racing. I am very impressed with the N2K2 "fixed setups" (unlike I was with N4's).......they seem very good at the few places I've tried them (WG, SP, Phoenix, Pocono, Bristol and Tally). My lap times at WG and SP are almost the same on the fixed setup as on my own "open" setup. I also really like the fact that the race server can "reset the current session" instantly....including the "race" start. So, if you mistakenly get a big pile up at the start.....the race can be instantly "reset" without going through practice-qual-warmup all over again....that's a huge bonus to fun racing online - IMHO! What we're doing (and I only suggest this since most of the background of these guys is in road racing - not totally unlike the RAS drivers) is the following, and this seems to be very enjoyable to all drivers: 1. All races are on fixed setup, full pace, no yellows, no damage and realistic weather....they are all short (15%)....with 20 min practice, 5 min warmup. (We will change to running yellows and damage...and longer races with at least one pit stop....later in the year when everyone is more comfortable and up to speed running N2K2). 2. We run three races each night as follows: **Race #1: Road Course Race (the race track is chosen from this list: SP, WG, Pocono or Phoenix....both "road course like" tracks). **Race #2: Always either Daytona or Tally - just for plain old fun and grins, door-to-door - racing against good drivers is a blast at these tracks. **Race #3: Any other NASCAR track chosen by consensus after Race #2 is over.....so nobody has a chance to practice or come up to speed on it...except during the 20 minute practice time allotted. Its a real "eye opener" to who is....and who is not......a good sim driver/race driver! No "NASCAR" track can be repeated until all have been run in this Race #3 format. With BS chat between races....this all takes about 2 hrs to 2 1/2 hrs to run. Last night, we were all having so much fun we did a fourth race back at Tally. I suggest this only because this "format" seems like it would be good for the group of drivers that have expressed an interest in running "weekend" RAS group races in N2K2. Only a thought. I could go for that... would have zero practise, obviously, but that didn't seem much of a problem Sunday (other than winning was out of the question ;-)). Would also prefer one longer race... pitting at least once would be good. Jan. =---

Personally, I'd rather see one longer race, or two medium ones. Short races tend to produce a sprint mentality, and that's rarely good IMO. Also, I think falling into the habit of restarting races would be a bad one for the RAS races; usually creates more problems than it solves. I don't think one restart would be a bad thing. They do it in F1. This is for fun after all, and it would be pretty crappy for someone to look forward to a race all week, make plans, and then get totaled through no fault of their own at the start. True, but the problem is, people start taking chances they wouldn't otherwise, knowing, big deal, we'll just restart. Guarantee it; doesn't matter who it is. Interesting... could be I've been confusing myself with the spring effect and damping settings having an influence. Must experiment. Don't you get oscillations when driving "hands off" on the roadcourses? > > <snip> > With the ff you mean? Or racing those Nascars in general? I don't think the tin tops are a problem as such, but more the finesse and tactical accumen required on the ovals. This, however, can be learned once the control setup inspires confidence. That said, I used to about as good in N2 as I am in GPL now, so I'm no stranger, just that driving N4 and N2k2 have hit home how hard Cup racing really is. As above, could be I'm confusing myself, but with a reasonably good road course setting I have almost zero FF on the ovals, eventhough by virtue of the speed and the banking the loads *should* theoritically be higher there. I can almost turn the wheel 15 degrees before any centering force can be detected. On the other hand... a comfortable setting on the ovals, i.e. wheel produces some centering force as soon as it's turned, the wheel is literally wrenched from my hands on the roadcourses. Thanks for the input, I'll experiment with similar settings. Jan. =---
I like your race routine, especially the SS races, but it looks like they want a long Bristol race this weekend. Still hope we do a second race. The included road course setups are around 12:1 IIRC, whereas I think the oval setups are at least double that. Double the ratio equals half the torque, if it's realistic. But also I think the forces are lower in general in NR2002 because of the changes they made to the tire model.

Similiar experience for me with my Ferrari wheel. Hitting the transition from t he apron to the banking at a track like Daytona has very little effect as well. David G Fisher

The way I drive, it would be far fewer than 180 laps. Consider the amount of slipping and sliding you do just to avoid accidents, and you'll probably eat up the tires a little sooner than you'd expect. I just drive until the crew chiew tells me my tires ar worn out or that I need gas. :) -- ========================================================= Redneck Techno-Biker & "programming deity" http://www.paddedwall.org/john DeMONS/1 for Nascar Racing 3 & Nascar Legends http://www.paddedwall.org/demons DeMONS/2 for Nascar Racing 4 and 2002 Season (in development) http://www.paddedwall.org/demons2 Barbarian Diecast Collector (460+ cars and counting) http://www.paddedwall.org/diecast If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================

Saturday. So your lock ups are over now since installing new memory? I may try that. Several Hundred laps now with no problems in about 4 different sims. The WIERD thing is...I basically took back my Crucial PC133 ram that I had last year. Gave that and the dead pieces from my first burned out Athlon to him. So a couple of days ago, I yanked out my generic ram and took the Crucial. Stuck the generic into his box....he has had NO problems...NONE....no slowdowns no freezes NOTHING>>>!!! I'm fairly convinced that the RAM must not have been seated properly in the memory slot. I put the Crucial back into the same slot as the generic came from so other than that guess....I'm at a loss. Kinda sucks that it took me a month to figure that out.... I wasn't necessarily saying we "had to restart"....I said I liked that feature in N2K2 for fun online races. You get 8 guys running a 20 lapper at Daytona....and 7 guys get taken out in the T1 start.......what the hell fun is that? Certainly a waste of time to let one driver run around for the next 19 laps by himself while everyone waits for the race to be over and run the next one. That's....where this "restart capability" comes in handy....IMHO. This is online racing for fun.....no season points.....no "keeping score"....so I think using the "restart feature" judiciously just makes lots of sense. The "three race" format allows the "race event" to have "something" for everyone. It also allows some guys who maybe don't make it to the exact start time....to join in any of the three races. Or, maybe they only have time to run one short race.....so they still can participate. This just makes sense to me considering the type of racing this is about (non-league....buddy to buddy racing). To be honest, I'm not sure how I'm going to last the whole race due to the "washing machine" effect of that track. I guess. So it's Saturday, 4pm EST (practice begins for half an hour??) 50% Bristol and maybe 25% WG (23 laps with half hour of practice)? Fixed <fast> setup. Realistic damage. What about yellows? I hope we can get to some tracks in following weeks where we can open the throttle and let loose. Depends on the weather. On sierra.com, with up to 25% racelength, at 70 you'll see low 15's in Q and between mid 15's and high 16's in the R. At ~87, you'll probably see medium-high 1:15's in Q and high 15's to high 16's in R. These times are valid for the fixed Papy setup. With custom setups, times will be up to a second faster I'd guess. Hotlaps I don't know, my personal best is a 1:13. I just went 1m19.4s in a race against the AI (default fast setup), and, seeing as I struggle to keep up with the 85% AI on most tracks and I totally obliterated them here(*)(**), I felt quite good about that. Until I read this part of the thread, that is. ;-( Car felt really good as well... can't think of anything that would make it significantly quicker (not that I consider myself qualified to set up a stock car yet, but still). Oh well... I'll scrap with Eldred and Dave.<vwg> Jan. =--- (*): thanks, in part, to your FF advice. (**): was within 2 car lenghts of lapping the field when a yellow was thrown... coincidence? ;-)

Just study the track lesson at WG carefully, it helped me big time. The racing line itself is correct, but the braking zone at that right-left corner before the loop becomes red much too early, you can break way later than that and throw the car over the bumps. Also the esses are important, be sure to ease a bit in the middle part so you get the perfect line for a fast exit.. Those two parts were the parts where I improved my laptimes the most (My first laps were 1:20 too :) Andre

I was in a race last night where I led a guy named "wheel*" into the inner loop just as we were catching a lapped car. As the three of us transitioned from the inner loop to the outer loop, we went three wide with the lapped car on the outside, me in the middle, and wheel on the inside. I thought wheel was pushing too hard given the nature of often quirky online connection stability, and I let him edge me into the outer loop, and I followed him nut-to-butt through the turn and onto the back straight. As we approached turn 10, I out-braked him and stuck the nose of my car inside and took the position back. All of this happened without scraping against each other. Even though I started 3rd and finished 5th (someone spun me in the inner loop on lap 2), it was one of the best races I'd ever experienced in NR2K2. It's fun to do roadies when everyone has a slight clue as to how to run on them. Oh yeah, even though we were running fixed setups, there was a guy named "Achim T" who did a 115mph qual lap - a full 2 mph faster than the 2nd place car. -- ========================================================= Redneck Techno-Biker & "programming deity" http://www.paddedwall.org/john DeMONS/1 for Nascar Racing 3 & Nascar Legends http://www.paddedwall.org/demons DeMONS/2 for Nascar Racing 4 and 2002 Season (in development) http://www.paddedwall.org/demons2 Barbarian Diecast Collector (460+ cars and counting) http://www.paddedwall.org/diecast If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================
